How much does the 2021 Subaru Outback cost?

There are 314 listings available, which suggests you have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2021 Subaru Outback a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Subaru Outback earns a 4.71/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise its comfortable ride, impressive safety features, and modern technology. The Outback also fits your needs well if you want a practical, versatile vehicle with generous space and go-anywhere capability, especially since the overview frames it as a sensible choice for everyday usefulness rather than flash. The recurring trade-offs are cabin storage and touchscreen-based climate controls, but the overall ownership experience is strongly positive.

With 34.4% of listings priced as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.

Is the 2021 Subaru Outback reliable?

Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with praise for the Outback’s low running costs and the kind of long-term usefulness that buyers tend to count on. The expert assessment also reinforces that theme by describing it as a vehicle built around reliability and low cost, rather than flash or complexity. Subaru’s maintenance perk language is not included here, but the overall ownership picture still leans strongly toward durability.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is not outright fragility so much as living with the slower base powertrain and the touchscreen-heavy controls.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Subaru Outback?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base trim uses two 7-inch touchscreens in the centre stack, while Premium and above get the 11.6-inch portrait display. Limited and Premier trims add a more upscale cabin with two-tone leather upholstery and contrast stitching, and the Outdoor XT uses water-resistant synthetic upholstery that should be easier to clean.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.5-litre boxer flat-four is described as brutally slow with the CVT, while the XT turbo 2.4-litre flat-four is much quicker, smoother, and more refined. The turbo engine is available on the Outdoor, Limited, and Premier trims.
• Safety package: Subaru EyeSight is standard on all trims and includes adaptive cruise, lane-keep assist, and forward automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard from the Touring trim, as is reverse automatic braking, while a driver-attention monitor is included only with the Premier and Premier XT.
• Infotainment: The main screen is 11.6 inches on Premium and above, and Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio are standard. The system also supports adaptive cruise settings and optional navigation, but the interface is described as dated.
• Fuel efficiency: The turbo XT is rated at 10.1 L/100 km city and 7.9 highway, compared with 9.0 city and 7.1 highway for the base engine.

Which 2021 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?

The 2021 Subaru Outback is offered in 6 trim levels: Base, Premium, Outdoor, Limited, Touring, and Premier.

Here's the short version:

• Base: This is the least expensive way into the Outback, but it also gets the most obvious feature compromises, including the dual 7-inch touchscreen setup instead of the larger portrait display. It makes sense only if you want the lowest entry price and can live with the simpler cabin.
• Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it brings the 11.6-inch portrait display and a more polished interior without pushing you into the pricier upper trims. If you want the sweet spot between equipment and cost, this is the one to target.
• Outdoor: This trim adds the XT turbo engine and extra driving modes for snow and mud, making it the right pick if you want stronger performance and more capability. It also uses easier-to-clean synthetic upholstery.
• Limited: This trim pairs the turbo XT engine with a more upscale cabin, including two-tone leather upholstery and contrast stitching. It suits you if you want the stronger engine and a more premium feel.
• Touring: This trim adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and reverse automatic braking, making it a strong choice if you want more standard safety equipment.
• Premier: This is the most luxurious choice in the lineup, with the driver-attention monitor included and the most complete safety and comfort mix. It makes sense if you want the most fully equipped Outback.

Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard from the Touring trim, and the driver-attention monitor is included only with the Premier and Premier XT.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Subaru Outback?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 314 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.20% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $25,710 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Subaru Outback's resale value?

The current average of $26,137 CAD sits slightly below last year's $28,787 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the market has become a little more buyer-friendly, which can make it harder for a future seller to command top dollar immediately. Even so, the Outback’s practical reputation, strong safety story, and broad appeal help support demand. Its value proposition is still anchored by the combination of utility and ownership satisfaction that keeps shoppers interested over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Subaru Outback safe?

The 2021 Subaru Outback was a 2020 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) "Top Safety Pick+", and it earned five-star ratings overall from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), with four-star ratings for the front passenger in a frontal crash and for rollover.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Subaru EyeSight is standard on all trims and includes adaptive cruise, lane-keep assist, and forward automatic emergency braking. The Outback also gets a driver’s knee airbag and passenger seat-cushion airbag as standard equipment. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard from the Touring trim, as is reverse automatic braking, while a driver-attention monitor is reserved for the Premier and Premier XT.

The main caveat is that the NHTSA results include lower four-star ratings in frontal passenger protection and rollover, even though the overall score remains strong.

Should I buy a 2021 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.20% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines practical space, strong safety, and available turbo power without chasing flash.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $23,384 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $26,137 CAD average.
• It brought a fresh sixth-generation update with new tech and engines.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $28,778 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $26,137 CAD average.
• It shifts toward a more rugged, adventure-focused direction.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and everyday usefulness, the 2021 is the primary target. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 is the value play; if you want a more rugged personality, the 2022 is the alternative to compare.
