CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Hyundai Sonata
overall

Summary
With 107 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,859 CAD, 30.8% of 2021 Hyundai Sonata listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Hyundai Sonata 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.5 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Hyundai Sonata stands out as a credible choice for drivers who still want a sedan that is fun to drive. It is presented as a car for people who value on-pavement performance but still need passenger and cargo practicality, which gives it a clear identity in a shrinking car market where traditional sport sedans are increasingly rare.
What makes it especially appealing is the way it combines performance and practicality in a midsize package at a bargain price. That balance is the Sonata’s main draw: it aims to satisfy enthusiasts without giving up the everyday usefulness buyers expect from a family sedan.
Owner feedback broadly supports that appeal, with drivers praising its smooth driving experience, safety features, strong fuel economy, stylish design, and excellent powertrain warranty. The main drawbacks mentioned are cabin noise and some frustration with optional features that require an upgrade to unlock full functionality.

The 2021 Sonata is a great car. The car’s features with the dashboard design, bose speakers, premium seats and sunroof are the best. It looks good on the road. The features are an upgrade from the Elantra but I would recommend.

After test driving a Nissan Altima, Toyota Camry, and Honda Accord, I kept going back to the Sonata. The car drives really smooth and has many features I was looking forward. I was not really impressed with the other vehicles I drove, especially since they were priced higher than the Sonata. Hyundai had definitely made an improvement in the last couple of years!!

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Sonata?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The N Line adds a more aggressive exterior treatment, sport front seats with Nappa leather bolsters and Dinamica suede inserts, red stitching, aluminum pedal covers, dark chrome accents, and a panoramic sunroof. If you want the most distinctive and best-equipped version, this is the one to focus on.
- Powertrain: The N Line uses a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder with 290 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission with paddle shifters, rev-matching, and launch control. It also adds sport-tuned suspension, stronger brakes, and quicker steering.
- Safety package: Hyundai’s ADAS suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assistance, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, Rear Occupant Alert, Safe Exit Warning, and Highway Drive Assist. The review notes that the N Line had not been tested independently at the time.
- Infotainment: You get a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel and a 10.25-inch touchscreen, plus onboard navigation, wireless smartphone charging, Bose audio, HD Radio, SiriusXM, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and Blue Link connected services. There is no WiFi hotspot.
- Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says the powertrain should use 8.8 L/100 km combined, with 10.1 L/100 km in the city and 7.2 L/100 km on the highway.
Which 2021 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?
The 2021 Hyundai Sonata is offered in 1 trim level: N Line.
Here's the short version:
The N Line: is the clear choice if you want the Sonata’s most performance-focused setup, with the strongest engine, sport-tuned chassis hardware, and the richest standard equipment list. It suits you best if you value driving enjoyment as much as everyday practicality, and it is the best-value pick in this lineup because it bundles nearly everything into one trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Sonata?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 106 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.35% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $18,842 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?
The current average of $18,842 CAD sits slightly below last year's $22,525 CAD.
That price decline suggests future sellers may face a softer market than owners saw a year ago. If you buy now, you may benefit from the lower entry price, but resale upside could be more limited if the market stays price-sensitive. Strong value positioning can still help attract shoppers when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata safe?
The 2021 Hyundai Sonata earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS on Limited trims with upgraded LED projector headlights.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Hyundai’s standard ADAS suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assistance, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, Rear Occupant Alert, Safe Exit Warning, and Highway Drive Assist.
A key caveat is that the N Line had not been tested independently at the time of the review, so its crash-test picture is less complete than the standard Sonata’s.
Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.35% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds a sporty N Line focus with strong performance and a rich standard equipment list.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $21,573 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $18,842 CAD average.
- It broadens appeal with a sporty N Line variant.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2021 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and a compelling performance-oriented trim. If you are willing to spend more for a newer model-year alternative, the 2022 is the secondary path to consider.
