CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Hyundai Sonata
overall

Summary
With 105 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,910 CAD, 31.4% of 2021 Hyundai Sonata listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Hyundai Sonata 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.5 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Hyundai Sonata stands out as a credible choice for drivers who still want a sedan that is fun to drive. It is presented as a car for people who value on-pavement performance but still need passenger and cargo practicality, which gives it a clear identity in a shrinking car market where traditional sport sedans are increasingly rare.
What makes it especially appealing is the way it combines performance and practicality in a midsize package at a bargain price. That balance is the Sonata’s main draw: it aims to satisfy enthusiasts without giving up the everyday usefulness buyers expect from a family sedan.
Owner feedback broadly supports that appeal, with drivers praising its smooth driving experience, safety features, strong fuel economy, stylish design, and excellent powertrain warranty. The main drawbacks mentioned are cabin noise and some frustration with optional features that require an upgrade to unlock full functionality.

The 2021 Sonata is a great car. The car’s features with the dashboard design, bose speakers, premium seats and sunroof are the best. It looks good on the road. The features are an upgrade from the Elantra but I would recommend.

After test driving a Nissan Altima, Toyota Camry, and Honda Accord, I kept going back to the Sonata. The car drives really smooth and has many features I was looking forward. I was not really impressed with the other vehicles I drove, especially since they were priced higher than the Sonata. Hyundai had definitely made an improvement in the last couple of years!!

| Year-Round Low | $18,929 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $23,116 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $23,116 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −18.11% |
Prices have softened 18.11% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 103 listings available, which suggests a modest amount of inventory for shoppers to compare.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Hyundai Sonata earns a 4.75/5 user rating and an 8.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its smooth driving experience, safety features, strong fuel economy, and stylish design. The overview also points to a clear fit if you want a sedan that blends on-pavement performance with passenger and cargo practicality. That makes it especially appealing if you want something more engaging than a typical family sedan without giving up everyday usefulness.
There are 30.1% good or great deals in the market, which is a healthy sign for value-focused shoppers.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights the Sonata’s strong fuel economy, smooth driving experience, and excellent powertrain warranty, all of which support a dependable ownership impression. Reviewers also point to its overall polish and the confidence it inspires on the road.
The expert drive notes that the car conveys a sensation of heft and quality, and that the brakes proved stout and trustworthy under repeated hard use. Hyundai’s five-year or 100,000-kilometre warranty and roadside assistance also help reduce long-term ownership risk for used buyers.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Sonata?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The N Line treatment adds sport front seats with premium Nappa leather bolsters and Dinamica suede inserts, red stitching, aluminum pedal covers, dark chrome accents, a panoramic sunroof, gloss black exterior details, 19-inch alloy wheels, and a four-outlet exhaust system. It is the right pick if you want the most distinctive and performance-focused version.
- Powertrain: The N Line uses a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder with 290 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission with paddle shifters, rev-matching, and launch control. It also includes sport-tuned suspension, stronger brakes, and quicker steering.
- Safety package: Hyundai’s ADAS suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assistance, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, Rear Occupant Alert, Safe Exit Warning, and Highway Drive Assist. The N Line had not been tested independently as this review was written.
- Infotainment: You get a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel and a 10.25-inch touchscreen, plus standard navigation, wireless smartphone charging, HD Radio, SiriusXM, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and Blue Link connected services. It does not offer a WiFi hotspot.
- Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says the powertrain should use 8.8 L/100 km combined, with 10.1 L/100 km in the city and 7.2 L/100 km on the highway.
Which 2021 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?
The 2021 Hyundai Sonata is offered in 1 trim level: N Line.
Here's the short version:
- N Line: This is the only trim, so your decision is straightforward. It brings the full performance package, the most distinctive styling, and the richest standard equipment, including the large digital display, the big touchscreen, navigation, wireless charging, and the full ADAS suite. It is the best-value choice because there is no lower trim to trade down to, and it suits you if you want the Sonata’s sportiest and most complete version.
The safety package is standard on this trim, and it includes Highway Drive Assist along with the rest of Hyundai’s ADAS features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Sonata?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.
- Deal availability: 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 103 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 18.11% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $18,929 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?
The current average of $18,929 CAD sits slightly below last year's $23,116 CAD.
That price drop suggests future sellers may face a softer market than owners saw a year ago. If you buy now, you are entering at a lower baseline, which can help reduce the amount of value lost over the next ownership cycle. The flip side is that resale upside may be more limited if market prices stay under pressure.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata safe?
The 2021 Hyundai Sonata earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS on Limited trims with upgraded LED projector headlights.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Hyundai’s standard ADAS package includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assistance, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, Rear Occupant Alert, Safe Exit Warning, and Highway Drive Assist.
A key caveat is that the N Line had not been tested independently as this review was written, and the standard Sonata’s frontal-impact ratings were not carried over to it at the time.
Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 18.11% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 N Line combines strong performance with practical everyday usability.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $22,021 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $18,929 CAD average.
- It adds a stronger sense of quality and a sporty N Line variant.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2021 is the smarter buy because prices are softer and inventory is available. If you are willing to spend more for a newer model year, the 2022 is worth a look for shoppers who want the same basic formula with a slightly fresher take.
