CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe
Summary
With 26 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,388 CAD, 11.5% of 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe 5 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe stands out as a well-rounded midsize SUV that blends useful space, modern features, and a broad range of powertrain choices. It offers three rows of seats, which is unusual among smaller midsize SUVs, and its cabin is described as airy aside from the cramped third row. Cargo space is generous at up to 2,267 litres, and towing capacity ranges from 900 to 2,040 kilograms depending on trim. Buyers also get standard all-wheel drive in Canada across the lineup, which adds to its appeal as a practical family vehicle.
This model year also benefits from a strong equipment list and meaningful updates. The Preferred trim is hybrid by default and includes third-row seating, LED headlights, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, and a proximity key. A refreshed exterior brought new lights, grille, wheels, and taillights, while a larger touchscreen was also offered. In testing, the Santa Fe rode comfortably and handled better than the previous generation, and features such as 3D-rendered 360-degree cameras, a UV-disinfecting phone holder, a digital key, and highway driving assist helped it feel modern without becoming overwhelming.
There are a few trade-offs to keep in mind. The cabin materials are not especially upscale, with scratch-prone plastics, fake wood, and cheap-feeling leather noted in testing. The third row is cramped, and some owners say the engine can feel under-powered at times. Even so, the 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe remains appealing because it combines value, comfort, efficiency, and a long list of useful features in a package that feels thoughtfully equipped for everyday use.

It drives like tye Mercedes that I traded should have. It's light and nimble. The sport mode is surprisingly athletic. It's no 'tarmac-ripper' but it's lively enough when you want it to be. With its Genesis-derived technology, it's a techno-geek's dream. I especially like the highly-configurable safety aids.

Handles well and is a pleasure to drive. The engine is a bit under-powered although I was aware of that when I purchased. The highway gas mileage is far better than stated. I get about 32 MPG on highway travel at 70 MPH.

How much does the 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $23,802 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $23,466 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $26,538 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $26,546 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.34% |
Prices have softened 10.34% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 388 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe earns a 5/5 user rating, and owners consistently praise its excellent value, comfort, and feature content. It also gets strong marks for its smooth driving experience and fuel efficiency on the highway, while the roomy, practical layout makes it a good fit if you want a family-friendly midsize SUV with three rows. The market also looks reasonably active, with 31.2% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a dependable ownership experience, with drivers describing it as a comfortable, trouble-free SUV that delivers strong value over time. The repeated praise for its smooth driving manners and fuel efficiency also supports the idea that it is a vehicle you can count on for everyday use. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about broad reliability concerns and more about choosing a well-maintained example that suits your needs.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile opportunities.
- Deal availability: 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 388 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.34% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $23,466 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe's resale value?
The current average of $23,802 CAD sits slightly below last year's $26,546 CAD.
That softer pricing can help you buy more affordably now, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you plan to sell later, the Santa Fe’s broad appeal, practical layout, and strong feature set should help it remain competitive with other used midsize SUVs. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.34% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $20,485 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $23,802 CAD average.
- It offers strong value in a practical five-passenger package.
The bottom line:
Choose the 2021 if you want the stronger all-around package and are comfortable paying more for the newer model year. If your priority is saving money, the 2020 is the better value path, especially if you do not need the 2021’s added three-row flexibility.
