What should I look for when buying a used 2021 GMC Canyon?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Elevation Standard is the base trim and comes with 18-inch gloss-black aluminium wheels, signature LED running lights, the CornerStep rear bumper, black door handles and side mirrors, manually adjustable front seats, power locks, two USB ports, and a standard 7-inch touchscreen. The Elevation adds LED fog lights, remote start, body-colour door handles, a manually sliding rear window, a six-way power driver’s seat, automatic climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and aluminium interior accents. The AT4 adds a more rugged look with 17-inch dark metallic aluminium wheels, aggressive all-terrain tyres, red tow hooks, off-road suspension, and available underbody skid plates. The Denali adds 20-inch polished aluminium wheels, a polished exhaust tip, chrome side steps, chrome door handles, LED bed lighting, a spray-on bed-liner, a four-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, and more luxury-focused equipment.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.5-litre four-cylinder makes 200 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque through a six-speed automatic, but it has to work hard. The available 3.6-litre V6 makes 308 hp and 275 lb-ft through an eight-speed automatic, and it is the stronger everyday choice. The available 2.8-litre Duramax diesel makes 181 hp and 369 lb-ft through a six-speed automatic, with rear-wheel drive or available 4WD.
• Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes a rearview camera, tyre pressure monitoring system, front-and-side-impact airbags, traction control, and Teen Driver. The available Driver Alert package adds forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning, and rear parking alert, and it is standard on the Denali but optional on other trims.
• Infotainment: The standard 7-inch touchscreen includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM satellite radio. A larger 8-inch screen with navigation is optional on the Elevation and AT4 and standard on the Denali, which also adds HD radio and wireless charging.
• Fuel efficiency: The base four-cylinder with rear-wheel drive uses 12.2 L/100 km city, 9.4 highway, and 10.9 combined. With 4WD, it uses 12.7 city, 9.9 highway, and 11.4 combined. The V6 with rear-wheel drive uses 12.9 city, 9.3 highway, and 11.3 combined, while the V6 4WD test truck used 14.9 city, 10.9 highway, and 13.1 combined. The diesel is the most efficient option, at 11.8 city, 7.9 highway, and 10.1 combined in rear-wheel-drive form, or 12.2 city, 8.4 highway, and 10.5 combined with 4WD.

Which 2021 GMC Canyon trim should I buy?

The 2021 GMC Canyon is offered in 4 trim levels: Elevation Standard, Elevation, AT4, and Denali.

Here's the short version:

• Elevation Standard: This is the value-focused starting point, and it gives you the essentials without the higher-trim extras. It suits you if you want the Canyon’s styling and utility at the lowest entry point, but it is also the most stripped-back version.
• Elevation: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades like remote start, automatic climate control, a power driver’s seat, and LED fog lights. If you want a better-equipped Canyon without jumping into the more expensive luxury or off-road trims, this is the one to target.
• AT4: This is the right pick if you want the rugged, off-road-inspired look and hardware, including all-terrain tyres, tow hooks, off-road suspension, and available skid plates. It also comes standard with the V6 and 4WD, so it suits you if capability matters more than price.
• Denali: This is the luxury-leaning choice, with the biggest screen, premium audio, heated-and-cooled front seats, wireless charging, and more chrome and convenience features. It makes sense if you want the most upscale Canyon and are willing to pay for it.

The Driver Alert package is standard on the Denali and optional on other trims.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 GMC Canyon?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.

• Deal availability: 24.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 89 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.36% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $34,370 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 GMC Canyon's resale value?

The current average of $35,002 CAD sits slightly below last year's $39,488 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you buy more truck for the money today, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive resale environment if prices continue to normalise. For you, that makes condition, trim, and equipment especially important when thinking about long-term value.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 GMC Canyon safe?

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety features include a rearview camera, tyre pressure monitoring system, front-and-side-impact airbags, traction control, and Teen Driver. The available Driver Alert package adds forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning, and rear parking alert, and it is standard on the Denali but optional on other trims. The Denali also adds an upgraded HD backup camera and Hitch Guidance.

Should I buy a 2021 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 24.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.36% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It adds a freshened face and a new AT4 off-road-inspired trim.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $37,091 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $35,002 CAD average.
• It adds a Denali Black Edition package and renames the High Elevation package.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2021 is the smarter buy because prices are softer and inventory is available. If you want the newer model-year updates and are willing to pay more, the 2022 is the cleaner upgrade path.
