What should I look for when buying a used 2021 GMC Canyon?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Elevation Standard is the base trim and comes with 18-inch gloss-black aluminium wheels, signature LED running lights, the CornerStep rear bumper, black door handles and side mirrors, manually adjustable front seats, power locks, two USB ports, and a 7-inch touchscreen. The Elevation adds LED fog lights, remote start, body-colour door handles, a manually sliding rear window, a six-way power driver’s seat, automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and aluminium interior accents. The AT4 is the off-road-inspired premium trim level with 17-inch dark metallic aluminium wheels, all-terrain tyres, red tow hooks, off-road suspension, and available underbody skid plates. The Denali adds 20-inch polished aluminium wheels, chrome details, LED bed lighting, a spray-on bed-liner, a four-way power front passenger seat, an 8-inch infotainment system, Bose premium audio, heated-and-cooled front seats, and a wireless charging pad.
• Powertrain: The base 2.5-litre four-cylinder makes 200 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque, but it has to work hard. The 3.6-litre V6 is standard on Elevation, AT4, and Denali, and it makes 308 hp and 275 lb-ft. The available 2.8-litre Duramax four-cylinder turbodiesel makes 181 hp and 369 lb-ft, and it can be a strong choice if you want more torque and better efficiency.
• Safety package: The available Driver Alert package includes forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning, and rear parking alert. It is standard on the Denali and optional on other trim levels. Standard safety equipment includes a rearview camera, tyre pressure monitoring system, front-and-side-impact airbags, traction control, and Teen Driver.
• Infotainment: The standard 7-inch touchscreen includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM satellite radio. A larger 8-inch screen with navigation is optional on the Elevation and AT4 trims and standard on the Denali. The Denali also adds HD radio and wireless charging.
• Fuel efficiency: The optional diesel engine returns 11.8 L/100 km city, 7.9 highway, and 10.1 combined in rear-wheel drive, or 12.2 city, 8.4 highway, and 10.5 combined with four-wheel drive. The base four-cylinder uses 12.2 city, 9.4 highway, and 10.9 combined in rear-wheel drive, or 12.7 city, 9.9 highway, and 11.4 combined with four-wheel drive. The V6 returns 12.9 city, 9.3 highway, and 11.3 combined in rear-wheel drive, or 14.9 city, 10.9 highway, and 13.1 combined with four-wheel drive.

Which 2021 GMC Canyon trim should I buy?

The 2021 GMC Canyon is offered in 4 trim levels: Elevation Standard, Elevation, AT4, and Denali.

Here's the short version:

• Elevation Standard: This is the value-focused starting point, and it gives you the core Canyon experience with the 7-inch touchscreen, LED running lights, and useful everyday features. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and can live without the extra comfort and convenience equipment.
• Elevation: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds remote start, LED fog lights, a power driver’s seat, automatic climate control, and more polish without jumping all the way to the premium trims.
• AT4: Choose this if you want the off-road-inspired look and hardware, including all-terrain tyres, off-road suspension, red tow hooks, and standard V6 power with 4WD. It suits you best if weekend adventure matters more than pure value.
• Denali: This is the luxury-leaning choice, with the most upscale features, the larger infotainment screen, Bose audio, heated-and-cooled front seats, and the most complete convenience package.

The Driver Alert package is standard on Denali and optional on the other trims, so that’s worth factoring into your comparison.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 GMC Canyon?

The market looks selective rather than overheated, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 26.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 90 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.53% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $34,455 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 GMC Canyon's resale value?

The current average of $34,458 CAD sits slightly below last year's $38,948 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the Canyon has become more approachable for used buyers, which can help keep demand steady in the near term. For a future seller, that also means you may not see the same pricing strength that the truck had a year ago.

Even so, the Canyon’s premium feel, broad trim spread, and strong owner satisfaction can help support interest when you eventually list it. Well-equipped examples, especially those with desirable features and cleaner histories, should remain easier to market than bare-bones trucks.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.25/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 GMC Canyon safe?

The 2021 GMC Canyon earns a Good rating from IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety features include a rearview camera, tyre pressure monitoring, front-and-side-impact airbags, traction control, and Teen Driver. The available Driver Alert package adds forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning, and rear parking alert, and it is standard on the Denali but optional on other trims. The Denali also adds an upgraded HD backup camera and Hitch Guidance.

Should I buy a 2021 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 26.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.53% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.25/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It adds a refreshed face and an AT4 trim that broadens its appeal.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $37,672 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $34,458 CAD average.
• It adds a Denali Black Edition package and renames the High Elevation package.

The bottom line: If you want the better value proposition, the 2021 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with a refreshed look and strong owner satisfaction. If you’re willing to pay more for a slightly updated feature set and a broader trim presentation, the 2022 is the alternative to compare.
