Is the 2020 Toyota Tacoma a good car?

Generally — the 2020 Toyota Tacoma earns a 4.3/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, and Safety.

Drivers consistently praise its reliability, performance, and practicality, and they also like its strong off-road capability. The expert notes also describe it as dependable and capable, especially when you want a vehicle that can handle rough use and off-road duty. Toyota’s standard maintenance and ownership experience is part of the appeal, but the Tacoma’s long-term ownership risk for used buyers is mainly tied to its age, rougher ride, and higher running costs than some rivals.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Tacoma?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Tacoma’s trims vary in equipment, and the base versions are more basic than the higher-end models. You’ll want to check whether the truck has the features you expect, since some conveniences are optional rather than standard.
• Powertrain: In Canada, the 3.5-litre V6 is standard, with 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic and 4WD are standard, while a six-speed manual is optional on some TRD models and gives you more control off-road.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes forward-emergency braking with pedestrian detection and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring is optional, so confirm whether the truck you’re considering has it.
• Infotainment: A 7-inch touchscreen is standard, while an 8-inch unit with navigation is available. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and wireless charging is available.
• Fuel efficiency: Fuel consumption is listed at 13.0 L/100 km in the city, 10.5 L/100 km on the highway, and 11.9 L/100 km combined for the V6.

Which 2020 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?

The safety package is strong across the lineup, with Toyota Safety Sense standard.

Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.31% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 adds important design and technology updates while keeping the Tacoma’s rugged, dependable character.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $43,013 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $40,156 CAD average.
• It adds dual-zone automatic climate control and two new special editions.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and useful updates. If you’re willing to pay more for a slightly fresher model year and a few extra features, the 2021 is the secondary path to consider.
