Toyota’s year-long trials for Safety Connect, Remote Connect, and Destination Assist add some ownership value, and the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house. What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota RAV4?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup ranges from the LE and XLE to the Trail and Limited, with the Trail adding a more rugged character and the Limited bringing more upscale equipment. Base versions are more basic, so check carefully for the features you want.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The non-hybrid setup is energetic enough for everyday use, but the transmission can occasionally seem unsure about gear selection.
• Safety package: Every model includes Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, radar adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The IIHS Top Safety Pick rating applies only to models with the full LED, curve adaptive headlights.
• Infotainment: Depending on trim, you get a 7- or 8-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, connected services, and wireless smartphone charging are available, and the system is generally easy to use.
• Fuel efficiency: The review cites an official Natural Resources Canada estimate of 8.6 L/100 km in combined driving for the tested TRD Off-Road model, while the test vehicle averaged 10.0 L/100 km.

Which 2020 Toyota RAV4 trim should I buy?

The 2020 Toyota RAV4 is offered in 4 trim levels: LE, XLE, Trail, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• LE: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the RAV4’s core safety, utility, and everyday usability at the lowest starting point.
• XLE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the strongest blend of equipment and value, especially with all-wheel drive.
• Trail: Choose this if you want the more rugged look and capability, plus the available TRD Off-Road package and its added hardware.
• Limited: Pick this if you want the most upscale feel and the most available technology, including features like the surround-view camera and digital rear-view mirror.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, but the headlight-related IIHS result depends on the lighting equipment fitted.

What is the 2020 Toyota RAV4's resale value?

The current average of $27,858 CAD sits slightly below last year's $29,920 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you buy more confidently now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if prices stay under pressure. The RAV4’s broad appeal, strong safety reputation, and reputation for reliability should help support demand over time. Even so, resale value will still depend on trim, equipment, and overall condition.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Toyota RAV4 safe?

Should I buy a 2020 Toyota RAV4 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.89% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds the TRD Off-Road package and broadens the lineup with more rugged appeal.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $26,564 CAD, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $27,858 CAD average.
• It brings bold styling, new tech, and a bit of off-road cred.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $29,917 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $27,858 CAD average.
• It adds the RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid and expands powertrain choice.

The bottom line: The 2020 is the best all-around pick if you want the strongest mix of value, safety, and variety. If your priority is saving money, the 2019 is the better budget path, while the 2021 makes sense if you want the newer lineup breadth and are willing to pay more.
