What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota RAV4?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup starts with the LE and stretches to the Limited, with XLE and Trail in between. The base LE is the most stripped-down choice, while the Trail and Limited bring more equipment and a more upscale feel. If you want the best blend of equipment and value, the XLE with all-wheel drive is the standout pick.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine with 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. It delivers solid numbers for the class, and the eight-speed automatic generally works well, though it can hesitate at times.
• Safety package: Every 2020 RAV4 includes Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, radar adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning with steering assist, and automatic high beams. Blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is also standard. The IIHS Top Safety Pick rating applies only to models with the full LED, curve adaptive headlights.
• Infotainment: Depending on trim, you get a 7- or 8-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, along with Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, and connected services. Wireless smartphone charging is available, and the Limited can be equipped with a digital rear-view mirror.
• Fuel efficiency: The hybrid model can use as little as 6.0 L/100 km in combined driving. In testing, the TRD Off-Road model averaged 10.0 L/100 km, versus an official estimate of 8.6 L/100 km in combined driving.

Which 2020 Toyota RAV4 trim should I buy?

The 2020 Toyota RAV4 is offered in 4 trim levels: LE, XLE, Trail, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• LE: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the RAV4’s core practicality and safety without paying for extras you may not use.
• XLE: This is the best-value choice. It is the trim the expert review points to for the best blend of equipment and value, especially with all-wheel drive.
• Trail: Choose this if you want the more rugged setup and the available TRD Off-Road package, plus the added capability and tougher hardware that come with it.
• Limited: This is the most upscale gas model, and it suits you if you want the richest feature set and the available tech upgrades.

The safety package is standard across the lineup, but the IIHS Top Safety Pick rating applies only to models equipped with the full LED, curve adaptive headlights.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota RAV4?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 674 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.10% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $28,092 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Toyota RAV4's resale value?

The current average of $28,205 CAD sits slightly below last year's $30,359 CAD.

That softer pricing can work in your favour if you are buying now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if prices stay under pressure. The current range suggests the model is still holding meaningful value, especially for shoppers who want a practical SUV with broad appeal. Strong demand for well-equipped trims should help support resale performance over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.57/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Toyota RAV4 safe?

The 2020 RAV4 earns a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS when equipped with the full LED, curve adaptive headlights, and it gets five-star ratings in the NHTSA tests mentioned in the source material.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, and it includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, radar adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning with steering assist, and automatic high beams. Blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is also standard. Toyota also includes a free 1-year subscription to Safety Connect services with automatic collision notification, an SOS emergency assistance button, and enhanced roadside assistance.

The main caveat is that the IIHS headlight result drops to Marginal without the full LED, curve adaptive headlights, so you will want to confirm that equipment on any used example you are considering.

Should I buy a 2020 Toyota RAV4 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.10% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.57/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds the TRD Off-Road package and keeps the lineup broad and practical.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $26,750 CAD, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $28,205 CAD average.
• It brings bold styling, upscale touches, and a bit of off-road ability.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $30,265 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $28,205 CAD average.
• It adds the RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid to an already broad lineup.

The bottom line: The 2020 is the best all-around choice if you want the strongest mix of value, safety, and versatility. If your priority is saving money, the 2019 is the better budget path, while the 2021 makes sense if you want to pay more for the newer-year option and broader powertrain choice.
