What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota RAV4?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup starts with the LE and stretches to the Limited, with XLE, Trail, and TRD Off-Road variants in between. The base LE is the most stripped-down choice, while the XLE is called out as the best blend of equipment and value. Trail and TRD Off-Road versions add a more rugged character, including off-road-focused hardware and cabin touches.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The transmission is an eight-speed automatic, and the RAV4 Hybrid is sold separately with stronger efficiency and 219 horsepower, though it is not paired with the TRD Off-Road package.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, radar adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning with steering assist, and automatic high beams. Blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is also standard. Headlight performance without the full LED, curve adaptive headlights is a weak point.
• Infotainment: Depending on trim, you get a 7- or 8-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, and connected services are included, and higher trims add navigation, JBL audio, wireless smartphone charging, and a 360-degree surround-view camera.
• Fuel efficiency: The hybrid is described as using as little as 6.0 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving. The TRD Off-Road test vehicle averaged 10.0 L/100 km, versus an official estimate of 8.6 L/100 km in combined driving.

Which 2020 Toyota RAV4 trim should I buy?

The 2020 Toyota RAV4 is offered in 5 trim levels: LE, XLE, Trail, Limited, and TRD Off-Road.

Here's the short version:

• LE: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the RAV4’s core safety and utility without paying for extras. It gives you the basics, but you’ll miss out on the richer equipment and more polished feel found higher up the range.
• XLE: This is the best-value choice if you want the strongest balance of equipment and price. The expert notes specifically call it the best blend of equipment and value, making it the trim most shoppers should start with.
• Trail: Choose this if you want a more rugged personality and the equipment that supports it. It adds a tougher character and is the gateway to the TRD Off-Road package.
• Limited: This is the trim to target if you want the most upscale tech and convenience features. It can be equipped with a digital rear-view mirror and a 360-degree surround-view camera, which make it the most feature-rich choice.
• TRD Off-Road: Pick this if you want the most adventure-focused version. It adds matte-black 18-inch alloy wheels, all-terrain tyres, a TRD suspension setup, torque-vectoring AWD, downhill assist control, and terrain-specific drive settings.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is included as well.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota RAV4?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 656 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.67% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $27,773 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Toyota RAV4's resale value?

The current average of $27,773 CAD sits slightly below last year's $29,758 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you if you buy now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if values continue to ease. The current range suggests the model is still in demand, yet not immune to broader used-market pressure. Strong owner satisfaction should help support interest over time, especially for well-kept examples with desirable equipment.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Toyota RAV4 safe?

The 2020 RAV4 earns a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS, but that applies only to models equipped with the full LED, curve adaptive headlights. It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, radar adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning with steering assist, and automatic high beams. Blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is also standard, and Toyota includes a free 1-year subscription to Safety Connect with automatic collision notification, SOS emergency assistance, and enhanced roadside assistance. The main caveat is the headlight-performance shortfall on versions without the full LED setup.

Should I buy a 2020 Toyota RAV4 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.67% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds the TRD Off-Road package and keeps the lineup broad and versatile.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $26,668 CAD, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $27,773 CAD average.
• It introduced the current-generation RAV4’s bold styling and added off-road credibility.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $29,613 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $27,773 CAD average.
• It adds the RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid to the lineup.

The bottom line: The 2020 is the sweet spot if you want the current-generation RAV4 with strong owner satisfaction, broad trim choice, and softer pricing than the 2021. If your priority is saving money, the 2019 is the value play; if you want the newest powertrain choice, look to the 2021.
