CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Subaru WRX
overall

Summary
With 91 currently listed for sale and an average price of $22,568 CAD, 31.9% of 2020 Subaru WRX listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Subaru WRX 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.33 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Subaru WRX stands out as a performance-focused four-door that still feels usable every day. Subaru’s own description frames it as the road-going result of decades in world rally racing, and the car’s standard all-wheel drive gives it a clear advantage for buyers who want traction and confidence in a sporty sedan. It also offers a manual transmission, which helps reinforce its enthusiast appeal.
What makes the 2020 Subaru WRX especially distinctive is the way it mixes that performance character with sensible tech and safety features. The test-drive data also points to its fun-to-drive nature, which is a major part of its appeal. At the same time, the car is not without drawbacks: its technology is described as outdated, and owner feedback suggests the interior quality can feel lacking, with some complaints about tyre noise at higher speeds.

Ive only had it a couple days but man the cvt is great! The handling is beautiful, you feel stuck on the rode and even during a massive downpour you feel very much in control.

Pretty cool ride for a car that holds its valuable so well. You can really feel the turbo pull when you pass 2-3k rpm. Car has enough power for fun, but can still be smooth enough for a DD. Clutch was relatively light. The interior is pretty cheap (plasticy and terrible sound system), but this is a car to drive for when you want a little bit of umph. Wish they still had a hatchback version - Id have no second thoughts of my next car if that were the case.

Perfect enthusiast family daily driver. If it had a hatch it’d be 100%. I drive for DoorDash and it makes work something I look forward to. Ride comfort is perfect. I even get 30 mpg on highway easy. Only complaint is tire noise above 50 mph. But the sound system bumps hard enough to cover it up. For me this car checks all boxes, I wanted to get the last version of an older model before they dump even more unnecessary technology into it. My last car was the FR-S and while that car was super fun, this one offers similar thrills, more torque, and a lot more utility. Wish the levorg was available state side. Hatch would make it the best car ever.

Loved driving it. It would be nice if the linkage was a little tighter. It is very comfortable and visually appealing.

Is the 2020 Subaru WRX a good car?
Yes — you’re looking at a 5/5 user-rated car with an expert rating of 8.3/10. The model scores 9/10 across Performance, Cost effectiveness, Technology, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise the turbo power, handling, and daily-driver comfort, and the WRX’s standard all-wheel drive and manual transmission help explain why it feels so engaging. The overview also points to its rally-bred character and everyday usability, which fits the way shoppers tend to use it. The main trade-offs are the outdated technology and the interior quality complaints, along with tyre noise at higher speeds. With 28.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop carefully.
Is the 2020 Subaru WRX reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with many drivers describing it as a satisfying long-term companion thanks to its performance and comfort. The expert notes also reinforce that sense of durability by describing Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel-drive hardware and the WRX’s robust, rally-derived engineering. The manual transmission is presented as smooth and forgiving, which adds to the sense that the car is built to be driven regularly rather than babied.
The ownership risk for used buyers is more about wear-and-tear from spirited driving than any single reliability red flag.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Subaru WRX?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base trim gives you the essentials, including a six-speed manual, heated front seats, automatic climate control, Bluetooth, satellite radio, two USB ports, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Sport adds the optional CVT, a 10-way power driver’s seat, lighting upgrades, a trunk lip spoiler, and EyeSight. Sport-tech brings 18-inch wheels, leather upholstery, and a larger 7-inch touchscreen. Sport-tech RS adds Brembo brakes, Recaro front seats, push-button start, and a 9-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.
- Powertrain: You get a turbocharged and intercooled 2.0-litre boxer-four with 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, paired with symmetrical all-wheel drive and a standard six-speed manual. A CVT is also available, but the manual is the enthusiast choice and the one the car is most clearly built around.
- Safety package: EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. It is optional on the WRX, while other Subaru models make it standard.
- Infotainment: The WRX uses a 6.5-inch touchscreen on lower trims and a 7-inch unit on higher trims. Both versions include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the system is described as easy to use.
- Fuel efficiency: The manual WRX is rated at 11.3 L/100 km city, 8.5 highway, and 10.1 combined. The CVT version is rated at 12.9 L/100 km city, 9.7 highway, and 11.5 combined.
Which 2020 Subaru WRX trim should I buy?
The 2020 Subaru WRX is offered in 4 trim levels: base, Sport, Sport-tech, and Sport-tech RS.
Here's the short version:
- base: This is the value play if you want the WRX experience with the least complexity. You still get the manual transmission, all-wheel drive, heated front seats, and the 6.5-inch touchscreen with smartphone integration, so it covers the core appeal well.
- Sport: This is the trim to target if you want the best balance of equipment and price. The optional CVT, power driver’s seat, lighting upgrades, trunk lip spoiler, and EyeSight make it the most rounded choice for shoppers who want more convenience without jumping too far up the range.
- Sport-tech: This is the better pick if you want a more polished cabin and a larger screen. The leather upholstery and 7-inch infotainment system make it feel more upscale, but it is best for buyers who value comfort and tech over pure value.
- Sport-tech RS: This is the enthusiast-focused choice, with Brembo brakes, Recaro front seats, push-button start, and upgraded audio. It makes sense if you want the most aggressive factory setup and are willing to pay for it.
EyeSight is optional on the WRX, so make sure you confirm whether a used example has the driver-assistance suite you want.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Subaru WRX?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 28.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 95 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.04% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $22,477 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Subaru WRX's resale value?
The current average of $22,477 CAD sits slightly below last year's $25,268 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you as a buyer today but may also mean future resale gains are more limited if you buy at the wrong point in the cycle. For a seller, the softer pricing means you should expect more competition from similarly priced listings and may need to lean on condition, mileage, and trim to stand out. The good news is that the WRX still has strong enthusiast appeal, which helps support demand when the car is clean and well maintained.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Subaru WRX safe?
The Subaru WRX earns top marks in testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and is even a 2020 IIHS Top Safety Pick. It earns five-star ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The WRX comes standard with front- and side-impact airbags, traction control, and a tyre-pressure monitoring system. EyeSight is the available driver-assistance suite, and it adds forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic emergency braking are also available. EyeSight is optional on the WRX, so you should verify whether a used example has it equipped.
Should I buy a 2020 Subaru WRX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 28.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.04% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 WRX keeps the rally-bred, manual-transmission character and standard all-wheel drive that define the nameplate.
The bottom line: If you want the classic WRX formula with strong owner satisfaction and a softer used-market price, the 2020 is a sensible target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, nearby model years may offer similar appeal, but the 2020 stands out as a well-rounded choice when you find a clean example with the right equipment.
