Is the 2020 Honda Civic a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Honda Civic earns a 4.9/5 user rating and an 8.2/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, great fuel economy, and fun driving experience. They also highlight the stylish design, safety advancements, and overall reliability and affordability. The Civic’s breadth is another advantage, since it offers multiple body styles and multiple powertrain options, which makes it easier to match the car to your needs.

The trade-offs are familiar ones: outdated technology and some desire for more power and more USB ports. Even so, the Civic’s practical, well-rounded character fits buyers who want an efficient, enjoyable small car with a strong long-term reputation. Good and great deals account for 29.6% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about durability and more about whether the car’s age and equipment level still suit your needs.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Honda Civic?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Civic comes in three body styles — sedan, coupe, and 4-door hatchback — and the base DX sedan misses some equipment that appears on higher trims, including the 7-inch touchscreen.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.0-litre inline 4-cylinder with 158 horsepower on the sedan and coupe, plus a 1.5-litre turbocharged inline-4 with 174 hp on Touring trims and 180 hp on Sport and Sport Touring hatchbacks. A six-speed manual is standard and a CVT is available on most grades.
• Safety package: Honda Sensing includes forward collision warning, emergency forward braking, lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Honda Sensing is standard on Si models and on every other Civic trim.
• Infotainment: Most models get a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the system itself is dated and more complex than newer Honda setups. Top trims add Garmin-based navigation, and the Sport Touring hatchback gets a garage-door opener.
• Fuel efficiency: The Si is rated at 8.9 L/100 km in the city, 6.4 L/100 km on the highway, and 7.8 L/100 km combined. Most CVT-equipped Civic models are rated near 8.0 L/100 km city and as low as 6.0 L/100 km highway.

Which 2020 Honda Civic trim should I buy?

The 2020 Honda Civic is offered in 3 trim levels: DX sedan, Touring, and Sport Touring.

Here's the short version:

• DX sedan: This is the entry point if you want the lowest starting price, but it leaves out some of the convenience and infotainment equipment found on higher trims.
• Touring: This is the best-value choice if you want the stronger turbocharged engine, more premium features, and a more complete everyday package.
• Sport Touring: Choose this if you want the most equipment, including the hatchback-specific extras and the most upscale Civic experience.

Honda Sensing is standard on Si models and on every other Civic trim.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Honda Civic?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without rushing.

• Deal availability: 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 692 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.82% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $20,031 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Honda Civic's resale value?

The current average of $20,031 CAD sits slightly below last year's $22,463 CAD.

That price trend suggests the Civic has become more accessible for buyers, which can make it a tougher vehicle for sellers to command top dollar right now. If you own one, the current market still reflects strong demand, but you may need to price competitively to move it quickly. The Civic’s broad appeal and reputation for reliability should help support resale interest over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Honda Civic safe?

The 2020 Honda Civic earns the Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and five-star ratings in all categories from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), except for four stars in the passenger frontal crash rating on the coupe.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Honda Sensing includes forward collision warning, emergency forward braking, lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Honda also improved the optional LED headlights, which helped secure the IIHS result. The Civic earned the top Good rating in all six crash tests.

Should I buy a 2020 Honda Civic or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.82% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Minor design tweaks and more standard safety and convenience features make this year feel fresher.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $18,626 CAD, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $20,031 CAD average.
• It offers the Civic’s established style, value, and performance with only minor changes.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $21,328 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $20,031 CAD average.
• It adds outgoing-generation appeal before the next redesign arrives.

The bottom line: The 2020 is the best all-around pick if you want the freshest version of this generation without paying more for the 2021. If price matters most, the 2019 is the value play, while the 2021 makes sense if you want the last year of the generation and are willing to pay a bit more.
