Is the 2023 Subaru WRX a good car?

Yes — you get a 5/5 user rating and a 7.7/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.

The WRX is a rally-inspired compact performance sedan that still feels distinctive if you want something sportier than the typical compact car. It stands out for its handling, its available manual transmission, and its stylish design, while still being usable as a daily driver.

The trade-offs are clear: the technology can be unintuitive, it is seen as poor value for money, and it offers less cargo space than rivals.

With 33.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitively priced example.

Is the 2023 Subaru WRX reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The WRX’s formula is built around a proven performance identity, and Subaru’s own history with the model supports its enthusiast appeal. The car’s well-mannered character also points to a package that can work as a daily driver without feeling fragile.

Its 2.4-litre turbocharged boxer engine and AWD layout are central to its dependability story, and the standard manual transmission gives you a straightforward mechanical setup if you want one. Subaru’s warranty coverage is also fairly standard for the segment.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that enthusiastic driving and premium fuel requirements can push running costs higher over time.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Subaru WRX?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Base models get 17-inch alloy wheels, while other trims get 18-inch wheels and standard summer tyres. The top Sport-Tech trim adds a 10-way adjustable driver’s seat, a 4-way manual front passenger seat, Ultrasuede upholstery, and red stitching, while lower trims use cloth with red stitching.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine with 271 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. A standard 6-speed manual is offered, and an optional CVT is available on Sport and Sport-Tech trims.
• Safety package: Subaru’s EyeSight driver assist technology is available only with the CVT and adds adaptive cruise control, automated lane-centring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane change assist are available on Sport and Sport-Tech trims, and reverse automatic braking comes with the CVT on those trims.
• Infotainment: Base models get dual 7-inch touchscreens, while Sport and Sport-Tech trims get an 11.6-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and the top trim adds an 11-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates it at 10.8 L/100 km combined with the manual transmission and 11.2 L/100 km combined with the CVT.

Which 2023 Subaru WRX trim should I buy?

The 2023 Subaru WRX is offered in 3 trim levels: base, Sport, and Sport-Tech.

Here's the short version:

• base: This is the value play if you want the WRX’s core appeal without paying for extras. You still get the manual transmission, the performance hardware, and the styling that makes the car stand out, so it suits you if you care most about driving feel and price.
• Sport: This is the best-value trim if you want a more complete daily-driver setup. It adds the larger 11.6-inch touchscreen and opens the door to the CVT and EyeSight, plus more available safety equipment.
• Sport-Tech: This is the trim to choose if you want the most comfort and convenience. It adds the most upscale cabin touches, the premium audio system, and steering-responsive headlights, but it makes the most sense if you plan to keep the car long term and want the fullest equipment list.

The Sport-Tech trim also gets the extra safety and lighting equipment tied to its trim level.

• Inventory: There are 227 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.79% compared with last year.

What is the 2023 Subaru WRX's resale value?

The current average of $31,195 CAD sits slightly below last year's $32,423 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more favourable for buyers, which can make future resale a little more competitive for sellers. If you buy now, you may benefit from the current dip, but you should also expect resale values to reflect the WRX’s performance-car positioning and running-cost considerations. Strong demand from enthusiasts can help support values, especially for well-kept examples with desirable equipment.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2023 Subaru WRX or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.79% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• There are no changes to report for this year, so you’re buying the established formula.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $28,675 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $31,195 CAD average.
• It combines performance with all-weather practicality at a price point that remains hard to match.

The bottom line: If you want the current WRX formula and are shopping the used market, the 2023 is a sensible pick because pricing has eased and inventory is decent. If your priority is saving money first, the 2022 is the better value path and still delivers the core WRX strengths.
