Why it stands out
The 2020 Subaru Ascent stands out as Subaru’s first midsize three-row SUV, and it was designed to correct the shortcomings of the Tribeca it replaced. It brings distinctly Subaru styling with clear Outback cues, standard all-wheel drive, and the distinction of being the largest Subaru ever built. Buyers also get seven- or eight-passenger seating thanks to bench or captain’s chair options for the second row, which helps make it a practical family haulier rather than just a larger crossover.
For 2020, the Ascent’s appeal is rooted in its family-friendly packaging and standard safety equipment. It comes with Subaru’s Symmetrical all-wheel drive, a 260-horsepower 2.4-litre Boxer turbocharged engine, and a towing capacity of up to 2,268 kilograms. It also includes rear doors that open to 75 degrees, 19 cup holders, three-zone automatic climate control, and EyeSight with adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. The base trim adds a 6.5-inch infotainment screen, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, four USB ports, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat.
There are trade-offs, though. The Ascent’s fuel economy is described as unimpressive, and the interior design is called outdated. The third row is also noted as cramped, so while the 2020 Subaru Ascent is a strong choice for buyers who value space, safety, and standard all-wheel drive, it is less convincing if efficiency or a more modern cabin are top priorities.

Very spacious! Love that the second row captains chairs can slide up expanding the floor room for third row passengers

Roomy and just as luxurious as comparable top of the line mid-size SUVs (like Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander). Safety rating is unbeatable. Smooth drive and great breaking.

I needed a vehicle with a third row option because my family is expanding. I test drove a Toyota Highlander and just felt this suited me better. The third row in the Highlander was uncomfortable and felt like an afterthought. The third row in the Ascent actually feels like a real third row - there is more room and the seats sit back a little at an incline, rather than being uncomfortably upright and with no leg room. I also found it easier to get into the back row in the Ascent, compared to the Highlander. We considered the Toyota Sienna hybrid, but I didnt really want a mini van and I didnt want something ridiculously huge. The Ascent is big, but reasonably so and very comfortable to drive. I think it will be great for long family trips and it feels very safe. Im only 53 and always feel uncomfortable and awkward driving a big beast of an SUV. But the drivers seat and steering wheel all seem to fit me very well. The Ascent also has a really great turn radius, so its more maneuverable than it appears. Lots of great family-friendly features and I also like that it has a good amount of ground clearance. It sits high off the ground but even as Im six months pregnant its still easy enough for me to get in and out of. I only wish they made a hybrid version for better fuel economy and more eco-friendly. However, the mpg is decent, given the size (comparable or even better than my old Honda CRV)

| Year-Round High | $29,259 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $29,179 CAD |

Prices have softened 16.84% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 115 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of choice in the used market.
Is the 2020 Subaru Ascent a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Subaru Ascent earns a user rating of 4.88/5, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its roominess, safety features, and family-friendly design, and many also like the comfortable interior and balanced driving experience. It fits especially well if you want a practical three-row SUV with standard all-wheel drive and seating flexibility for seven or eight passengers. With 32.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive offer.
Is the 2020 Subaru Ascent reliable?
Owners rate it 4.88/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers, with praise centred on comfort, safety, and overall confidence in daily use. That said, used buyers should still check maintenance records carefully, since long-term ownership risk always depends on how well the vehicle was maintained.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Subaru Ascent?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be choosy if you shop carefully.
- Deal availability: 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 115 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.84% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $24,266 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Subaru Ascent's resale value?
The current average of $24,266 CAD sits slightly below last year's $29,179 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the Ascent more attractive to buyers now but may also limit near-term upside for a future seller. If you buy at today’s average or below, you may have less room for appreciation later unless market conditions improve. Strong demand for family-focused SUVs can still help support values, especially when the vehicle has a good ownership reputation.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 Subaru Ascent or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.84% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2020 Subaru Ascent makes the most sense if you want a value-conscious three-row SUV with strong owner approval and a softer used-market price. If you’re shopping on a tighter budget, nearby model years may also be worth comparing, but the 2020 stands out as the better pick when you want a balance of price, family utility, and buyer confidence.
