Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 a good car?

Yes — it earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 7.7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise the comfortable interior, smooth and quiet ride, and strong highway power. Many also like the safety features and the luxurious feel, which fits the CX-5’s premium-leaning positioning. The main trade-offs are limited cargo space and rear legroom, along with some wish for more engine power.

That makes it a strong fit if you want a compact SUV that feels more refined and enjoyable to drive than many rivals. With 31.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owners describe it as dependable and trouble-free, with confidence in the SUV’s long-term ownership experience. The expert evaluation also points to a solid, well-built vehicle that feels like it delivers good value for the money. If you plan to keep it for years, the main ownership risk is more about practicality and tech age than mechanical trustworthiness.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Mazda CX-5?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The GX starts with a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, HD Radio, text messaging support, integrated internet radio apps, and E911 emergency notification. Higher trims add more equipment, with the GT bringing SiriusXM, a Bose sound system, and navigation, while Signature adds a surround-view camera system.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.5-litre four-cylinder makes 187 horsepower and uses a six-speed automatic. Turbo trims get a stronger version of the same engine, and AWD is standard on the upper trims in Canada.
• Safety package: The standard suite includes smart city brake support, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. GS adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist.
• Infotainment: GX uses a 7-inch touchscreen, while GT Turbo adds an 8-inch colour touchscreen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, but the system can be frustrating to use.
• Fuel efficiency: The naturally aspirated engine is rated at 9.3 L/100 km combined with AWD and 8.8 L/100 km combined with FWD. The turbocharged engine is rated at 9.8 L/100 km combined.

Which 2020 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 5 trim levels: GX, GS, GT, GT Turbo, and Signature.

Here's the short version:

• GX: This is the entry point, but it still gives you Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the core Mazda Connect setup. It makes sense if you want the CX-5’s style and safety without stretching the budget.
• GS: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist. If you want the strongest mix of price and safety equipment, start here.
• GT: This trim adds SiriusXM, a Bose premium sound system, and navigation, making it a better pick if you want a more upscale daily driver.
• GT Turbo: Choose this if you want the stronger turbocharged engine and the added performance it brings.
• Signature: This is the most luxurious version, with premium Nappa leather, real wood, a black headliner, and a surround-view camera system.

The GS is the best-value trim for most used buyers, while the Signature is the one to target if you want the most premium experience. The safety package expands meaningfully at GS, so that trim is the key step up for many shoppers.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mazda CX-5?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 427 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.78% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $22,960 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Mazda CX-5's resale value?

The current average of $23,033 CAD sits slightly below last year's $25,815 CAD.

That price movement suggests the CX-5 has become more accessible for used buyers, which can help demand stay healthy. For a future seller, the softer market means you may not recover as much as owners did a year ago, especially if your vehicle is not in top condition or well equipped. On the other hand, a premium-feeling compact SUV with broad appeal can still hold interest better than many rivals.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and a five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard driver-assistance suite includes smart city brake support, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist are added at the GS trim. Standard LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers are also part of the package, while adaptive headlights come with GT trim.

Should I buy a 2020 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.78% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines premium interior materials, stylish design, and a fun-to-drive character.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $25,401 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $23,033 CAD average.
• It brings enhanced technology and a new Kuro Edition for Canadian buyers.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter buy because prices are softer and inventory is still decent. If you care more about updated tech and are willing to pay more, the 2021 is the better path.
