CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Mazda CX-5
Summary
With 115 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,092 CAD, 33.0% of 2017 Mazda CX-5 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Mazda CX-5 4.7 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Mazda CX-5 stands out because it blends compact-SUV practicality with a distinctly sporty character. Mazda’s second-generation model was introduced in 2017 for the 2018 model year, and it brought a sleeker exterior and a more stylish, premium-feeling interior than before. It also kept the CX-5’s reputation for being enjoyable to drive, with responsive acceleration from the 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and a sharp driving feel that suits the car’s more car-like personality.
For buyers, the appeal is in how well equipped the CX-5 is and how much polish it offers for the segment. The GX trim includes 17-inch alloy wheels, a rear-view camera, air conditioning, LED headlights, keyless entry, push-button start, and Mazda Connect with a seven-inch touchscreen display and SMS text delivery. Higher trims add features such as heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, leather seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, navigation, and a 10-speaker Bose stereo system. Mazda also added a 2.5-litre turbocharged engine in 2020, and AWD became standard in 2022, but those changes came later than this model year.
There are a few trade-offs to keep in mind. The CX-5 has been praised for its style and driving enjoyment, but it is not as practical as some rivals, and owners have cited engine, windshield, brake, and infotainment issues in this generation. Even so, the 2017 Mazda CX-5 remains appealing because it delivers a near-premium feel, strong standard equipment, and a more engaging driving experience than many compact SUVs.

I bought this car to replace the same model that I lost in an accident. It was a year older and a lower trim. This trim is the premium trim and it’s nice. It has a heads up display full of seats. The steering wheel warms up memory seats and it runs like a dream. I really enjoy driving this car..

I bought the sport, base model, and for being a base model the features are pretty good. The only thing I wish I had, was rear vents for the AC.

Is the 2017 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 4.7/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its stylish design, smooth ride, and excellent reliability, and many also like its comfortable handling and fuel economy on longer trips. For you, that means the CX-5 fits well if you want a compact SUV with a more polished, near-premium feel and a more engaging drive than many rivals. Is the 2017 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to excellent reliability, and the model is described as dependable enough that many drivers feel confident taking it on longer trips. That said, used buyers should still check maintenance records carefully, since any older SUV can carry ownership risk if service history is incomplete.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mazda CX-5?

What is the 2017 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $17,989 CAD sits slightly below last year's $18,765 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the model has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can make it easier for future sellers to attract interest if they price competitively. The current market also shows that shoppers still value the CX-5’s mix of style, comfort, and reliability, which helps support demand. If you maintain the vehicle well and keep service records, you should be in a better position when it comes time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.14% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 Mazda CX-5 is the better choice if you want the newer, more polished version of this SUV with strong owner approval and a market that still offers some deal potential. If you are especially price-sensitive, a nearby older year may cost less up front, but the 2017 is the safer pick if you want the stronger overall blend of style, satisfaction, and resale appeal.
