Is the 2020 Honda Civic a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Honda Civic earns a 4.9/5 user rating and an 8.2/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, great fuel economy, fun driving experience, stylish design, and safety advancements. The Civic also fits buyers who want a practical, well-rounded small car with strong everyday appeal and a reputation for reliability and longevity.

The main trade-offs are outdated technology and some owner requests for more power and more USB ports. Even so, it remains a compelling choice if you want a small car that feels more expensive than its price suggests.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Honda Civic?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Civic comes in three body styles—sedan, coupe, and 4-door hatchback—and the 2020 updates add new wheels, lighting, and trim details on some versions. Base models are simpler, while higher trims bring more visual polish and convenience features.
• Powertrain: You can choose from a 2.0-litre inline 4-cylinder, a 1.5-litre turbocharged inline-4, or higher-output Si and Type R versions. The 1.5-litre engine is the better pick if you want stronger mid-range acceleration and responsiveness.
• Safety package: Honda Sensing includes forward collision warning, emergency forward braking, lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Some trims also benefit from improved LED headlights, and the Type R was not tested by IIHS.
• Infotainment: The 7-inch touchscreen is standard on all models except the base DX sedan, and it includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system itself is dated and can feel overly complex, even though Bluetooth is standard.
• Fuel efficiency: The Si is rated at 8.9 L/100 km city, 6.4 L/100 km highway, and 7.8 L/100 km combined. Most CVT-equipped Civic models are rated near 8.0 L/100 km city and as low as 6.0 L/100 km highway.

Which 2020 Honda Civic trim should I buy?

The 2020 Honda Civic is offered in 3 trim levels: DX sedan, Touring, and Sport Touring.

Here's the short version:

• DX sedan: This is the entry point if you want the lowest-cost Civic, but it is the most stripped-back version and misses some of the convenience and tech upgrades found higher up.
• Touring: This is the best-value choice if you want a more complete Civic experience, with the stronger feature set that includes the 1.5-litre turbocharged engine on sedan and coupe versions.
• Sport Touring: This is the most feature-rich hatchback choice, adding the highest level of equipment and convenience features for shoppers who want the most polished Civic hatch.

Honda Sensing is standard across the Civic lineup, and the improved LED headlights help the car earn strong safety recognition.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Honda Civic?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 694 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.55% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $19,989 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Honda Civic's resale value?

The current average of $19,989 CAD sits slightly below last year's $22,347 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favourable point, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if values continue to ease. If you plan to resell later, the Civic’s broad appeal and strong reputation should help support demand, especially for well-kept examples with desirable equipment. The current price trend suggests there is still room for value-conscious buyers to negotiate.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Honda Civic safe?

The 2020 Civic earns the Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and five-star ratings in all categories from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), except for a four-star passenger frontal crash rating on the coupe.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Honda Sensing includes forward collision warning, emergency forward braking, lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Honda also improved the optional LED headlights, which helped secure the IIHS result across all body styles except the Type R, which was not tested.

Should I buy a 2020 Honda Civic or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.55% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Minor design tweaks and more standard safety and convenience features make this year feel fresher.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $18,548 CAD, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $19,989 CAD average.
• It offers the same winning formula with only minor tweaks.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $21,269 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $19,989 CAD average.
• It marks the outgoing generation and adds end-of-run appeal.

The bottom line: The 2020 is the best all-around pick if you want the freshest version of this generation without paying more for the 2021. If price matters most, the 2019 is the value play, while the 2021 makes sense if you want the last model year of the generation.
