What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Hyundai Elantra?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Essential trim is the most basic version, with a 5-inch screen and fewer convenience and safety features than higher trims. The Preferred trim adds a larger 7-inch display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert, while the Ultimate trim adds more premium tech and safety equipment.
• Powertrain: The base setup uses a 147-horsepower, 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with a CVT, while the Essential trim can also be had with a six-speed manual. All versions are front-wheel drive, and the Sport trim uses a 1.6-litre turbo four-cylinder with more power and a different rear suspension.
• Safety package: A package on the Preferred trim adds forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and a driver attention monitor. The Ultimate trim adds full LED headlights with automatic high-beam operation, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, and Safe Exit Assist.
• Infotainment: Base models get a 5-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth and a USB port. The Preferred trim upgrades to a 7-inch display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the Ultimate trim gets an 8-inch screen, navigation, wireless charging, and a premium Infinity audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: Hyundai says the CVT improves fuel efficiency by 0.6 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving, but real-world testing returned 8.0 L/100 km on the test loop.

Which 2020 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2020 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 5 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, Luxury, Ultimate, and Sport.

Here's the short version:

• Essential: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Elantra nameplate. You get the core sedan package, but you give up the richer infotainment and safety upgrades found higher up the range.
• Preferred: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the 7-inch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. If you want the strongest mix of everyday convenience and safety, this is the one to target.
• Luxury: This trim sits above Preferred and is aimed at shoppers who want a more upscale feel without jumping all the way to the top model. It builds on the mid-range formula with more comfort and convenience content.
• Ultimate: This is the most feature-rich non-Sport trim, adding the 8-inch screen, navigation, wireless charging, premium Infinity audio, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, and Safe Exit Assist. Choose it if you want the most complete tech and safety package.
• Sport: This is the performance-oriented choice, with a 1.6-litre turbo engine, more power, and an independent rear suspension. It suits you best if driving feel matters more than pure value.

The Preferred trim is the best-value choice for most buyers, while the Ultimate trim is the one to seek if you want the fullest safety package.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Hyundai Elantra?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.

• Deal availability: 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 505 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.99% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $14,645 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $14,645 CAD sits slightly below last year's $17,026 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the model has already moved through a meaningful part of its depreciation curve. If you buy now, you are entering at a lower price point than a year ago, which can help limit near-term value loss. For a future seller, the key question will be whether the Elantra’s value-focused reputation continues to attract budget-conscious shoppers.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Hyundai Elantra safe?

The 2020 Hyundai Elantra earns a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety when equipped with full LED headlights, and it earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Preferred trim already includes blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while the available driver-assistance package adds forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and a driver attention monitor. The Ultimate trim goes further with full LED headlights with automatic high-beam operation, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, and Safe Exit Assist. NHTSA also notes a concern about rear-door intrusion on the rear-seat passenger during the side-impact test.

Should I buy a 2020 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.99% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds improved fuel efficiency ratings and newly packaged safety features.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $12,306 CAD, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $14,645 CAD average.
• It is an updated, value-focused compact sedan with a more polished feel.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $17,565 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $14,645 CAD average.
• It brings a more polished blend of style, sophistication, space, and sportiness.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, value, and available safety features, the 2020 is the sweet spot. If your budget is tighter, the 2019 is the cheaper route into the same basic formula. If you want a more modern-feeling compact sedan and can spend more, the 2021 is the stronger upgrade path.
