Is the 2020 Ford Escape a good car?

Generally — you’re looking at a 4.4/5 owner-rated SUV with an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.

Owners consistently praise the Escape’s smooth driving experience, numerous features, safety technology, acceleration, and comfort. That lines up well with its use-case as a modern, well-rounded compact crossover that feels more polished than basic transportation.

The main trade-offs are limited cargo space and some complaints about room for taller people, plus a noisy engine under acceleration and mixed feelings about the gearshift design and wireless charging compatibility.

Is the 2020 Ford Escape reliable?

Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels smooth, comfortable, and feature-rich, with safety technology that helps it stand out in daily use. The expert assessment also reinforces that it delivers a level of quality and performance that elevates what a small SUV can be.

Ford’s standard safety and driver-assistance equipment adds to the sense that this is a dependable commuter choice, especially if you value a well-equipped package from the start. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright reliability and more about whether the cabin space and feature quirks suit your needs.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Ford Escape?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S is the most stripped-back version, with a 4.2-inch instrument-panel screen and a 4.2-inch centre screen, while the SE adds the 8-inch Sync 3 system, automatic climate control, heated front seats, and a power driver’s seat. CarGurus recommends the SE because it delivers the best value.
• Powertrain: You get multiple engine choices, including a 180-horsepower three-cylinder, a 250-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder, and hybrid setups. The turbo engine brings brisk acceleration, while the hybrid is the most efficient option.
• Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The base trim still gets a full suite of driver-assistance features.
• Infotainment: The base trim uses a 4.2-inch screen, while the SE upgrades you to an 8-inch Sync 3 touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system also supports over-the-air updates.
• Fuel efficiency: The hybrid returns 5.4 L/100 km in the city and 6.3 L/100 km on the highway with FWD, or 5.5 L/100 km city and 6.4 L/100 km highway with AWD. The 1.5-litre turbo engine returns 8.6 L/100 km city and 7.1 L/100 km highway, while the AWD version returns 8.9 L/100 km city and 7.6 L/100 km highway.

Which 2020 Ford Escape trim should I buy?

The 2020 Ford Escape is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SEL, and Titanium.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point, but it feels basic with its small screens and simpler cabin equipment. It makes sense only if you want the lowest-cost way into the model.
• SE: This is the best-value trim. You get the 8-inch Sync 3 touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, automatic climate control, heated front seats, and a power driver’s seat, which makes it the smartest pick for most shoppers.
• SEL: This trim adds more convenience and comfort features, including a hands-free power liftgate, synthetic upholstery, a heated steering wheel, and upgraded wheels. It suits you if you want a more upscale daily driver.
• Titanium: This is the most premium version, with unique wheels, a dual-panel moonroof, leather seating, premium audio, and quieter-cabin touches. It’s the right choice if you want the most luxurious Escape experience.

Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard across the lineup, so you get the core safety package even on the lower trims.

• Inventory: There are 526 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 16.62% compared with last year.

What is the 2020 Ford Escape's resale value?

The current average of $17,445 CAD sits slightly below last year's $20,923 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Escape has become more accessible for used buyers, which can make it easier to move later if you buy at the right number. For a future seller, the current softness means you’ll want to be disciplined about purchase price so you have room to absorb normal depreciation.

The Escape’s broad appeal as a stylish, well-equipped compact SUV should help support demand, especially for trims that balance features and value. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

It gives you the strongest mix of style, technology, and safety, while still offering enough inventory and price softness to shop carefully. If you’re especially price-sensitive, focus on well-equipped examples that sit near the lower end of the current range.
