Is the 2020 Ford Escape a good car?

Generally — the 2020 Ford Escape earns a 4.42/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating, which points to a well-liked small SUV with broad appeal. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its smooth driving experience, numerous features, and safety technology, and they also like its acceleration and comfort. The Escape is framed as a redesigned, high-tech, handsome, and surprisingly athletic small SUV, which fits buyers who want something practical but not plain.

The main trade-offs are limited cargo space and some space concerns for taller occupants, along with mixed feedback on the gearshift design and limited wireless charging compatibility. Even so, the market still shows 30.9% of listings as good or great deals, which suggests there are worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2020 Ford Escape reliable?

Owners rate it 4.42/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner summary points to a vehicle that many drivers feel good about living with over time, especially because they value its smooth driving experience, numerous features, and safety technology. The feedback also suggests you can count on it for comfort and everyday usability, which matters if you plan to keep the vehicle for years.

The expert test-drive notes also support that dependable impression by describing the Escape as a polished, well-rounded compact SUV with strong equipment levels and a refined driving feel. Ford also includes a broad set of standard safety features, which can help reduce ownership stress.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the same space and usability complaints that show up in owner feedback may matter more as the vehicle ages and your needs become clearer.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Ford Escape?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S comes with 17-inch steel wheels with plastic covers, a 4.2-inch instrument-panel screen, manually adjustable front seats, and a 4.2-inch centre-console screen, while the SE adds 17-inch painted aluminum wheels, automatic climate control, heated front seats, satellite radio, a 10-way power driver’s seat, and the 8-inch Sync 3 system. The SEL adds fog lamps, black roof racks, 18-inch machined aluminum wheels, a hands-free power liftgate, memory for the driver’s seat, synthetic upholstery, sport bucket seats, and a heated steering wheel. Titanium adds 19-inch wheels, LED fog lamps, acoustic-laminated glass, a dual-panel moonroof, wood paneling, leather seating, and a premium audio system.
• Powertrain: The Escape offers four engine options, including a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine with 180 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque, a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder with 250 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, and hybrid setups. The turbo engine provides brisk acceleration, while the hybrid is the most efficient version.
• Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The base S also has a full suite of driver-assistance features.
• Infotainment: The base trim uses a 4.2-inch screen, while the SE upgrades to an 8-inch Sync 3 touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system also supports an over-the-air update for CarPlay functionality.
• Fuel efficiency: The hybrid returns fuel consumption figures of 5.4 L/100 km in the city, 6.3 on the highway, and 5.8 combined with FWD, or 5.5 city, 6.4 highway, and 5.9 combined with AWD. The 1.5-litre turbo engine returns 8.6/7.1/7.9 combined, or 8.9/7.6/8.3 with AWD, while the 2.0-litre turbo with AWD returns 10.4/7.5/9.1.

Which 2020 Ford Escape trim should I buy?

The 2020 Ford Escape is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SEL, and Titanium.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point, but it feels basic because of the small 4.2-inch screen and simpler cabin equipment. It does still include FordPass Connect and a full suite of driver-assistance features, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model.
• SE: This is the best-value trim. It adds the 8-inch Sync 3 touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, automatic climate control, heated front seats, and a power driver’s seat, which makes it the smartest choice for most shoppers.
• SEL: This trim adds more convenience and comfort with fog lamps, roof racks, a hands-free liftgate, memory seating, synthetic upholstery, sport bucket seats, and a heated steering wheel. It suits you if you want a more upscale daily driver without going all the way to Titanium.
• Titanium: This is the most premium version, with 19-inch wheels, a dual-panel moonroof, leather seating, wood trim, acoustic-laminated glass, and a premium audio system. It is the right pick if you want the most upscale Escape experience.

Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the core safety package.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Ford Escape?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to compare listings and wait for the right one.

• Deal availability: 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 530 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 16.42% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $17,813 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Ford Escape's resale value?

The current average of $17,813 CAD sits slightly below last year's $21,313 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Escape has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can be helpful if you are buying now but less favourable if you are planning to sell soon. If market conditions stay soft, future sellers may need to price more aggressively to stand out.

The good news is that the model’s broad appeal, strong feature content, and solid owner satisfaction can help support demand. Well-equipped trims with the right options should be easier to move than bare-bones examples.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.42/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Ford Escape safe?

The 2020 Ford Escape earned the best overall score of Good from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in all phases of testing.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The Escape also comes with a full array of front- and side-impact airbags, a reversing camera, traction control, and a tire-pressure-monitoring system.

That standard safety content is a major strength, especially because features that are often optional on rivals are included here. The main caveat is that the base trim still has a simpler cabin and screen setup, so you may want to move up if you want a more modern-feeling interior alongside the safety tech.

Should I buy a 2020 Ford Escape or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 16.42% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.42/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 model is a redesigned Escape that brings a high-tech, handsome, and surprisingly athletic character, along with standard advanced safety features.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of value, features, and safety, the 2020 is the one to focus on. If you are especially price-sensitive, keep shopping the market for a lower-priced listing, but the 2020 already looks like a sensible used-buy choice thanks to its softened pricing and strong owner feedback.
