Is the 2020 Acura MDX a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Acura MDX earns a 4.7/5 user rating and a 7.2/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its spacious cabin, strong safety features, and comfortable, family-friendly feel. The review summary also points to its power and overall practicality, while the overview frames it as a well-rounded three-row luxury SUV with broad everyday usefulness. The main trade-offs are the uninspired styling and outdated technology, and some owners felt the tech did not match the price.

Is the 2020 Acura MDX reliable?

The expert review also describes the MDX as a solid, well-rounded package with competitive comfort and convenience, which supports the impression of trouble-free ownership.

Acura’s standard maintenance coverage can help reduce early ownership friction. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright reliability and more about whether the technology and third-row packaging still suit your needs.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Acura MDX?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base MDX is nicely equipped, but it lacks the extra tech features that define the higher packages. If you want more convenience and a more premium feel, the Technology Package and above add meaningful upgrades, while the Elite Package brings the most equipment.
• Powertrain: You get a naturally aspirated 3.5-litre V6 with 290 horsepower and a nine-speed automatic, with all-wheel drive standard in Canada. The MDX Sport Hybrid adds a 3.0-litre V6 with three electric motors and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, but the standard gas model is the one most shoppers will cross-shop.
• Safety package: AcuraWatch is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, lane-keep assist, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is added with the Technology Package.
• Infotainment: The base model includes twin screens, an 8.0-inch upper display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, text and email capability, five USB ports, SiriusXM, and an eight-speaker audio system. Higher trims add navigation, parking sensors, premium audio, and, at the top end, a rear entertainment screen.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada fuel consumption estimates for the SH-AWD model are 12.3 L/100 km in the city, 9.2 L/100 km on the highway, and 10.9 L/100 km combined.

Which 2020 Acura MDX trim should I buy?

The 2020 Acura MDX is offered in 4 trim levels: SH-AWD, Technology Package, A-Spec Package, Technology Plus, and Elite Package.

Here's the short version:

• SH-AWD: This is the entry point, and it already gives you the core MDX experience: standard all-wheel drive, the V6 powertrain, AcuraWatch safety tech, and a well-equipped cabin. It makes sense if you want the best value and do not need the extra convenience and luxury features found higher up.
• Technology Package: This is the best-value upgrade for many shoppers because it adds front and rear parking sensors, navigation, sun position-linked climate control, and Acura/ELS Studio Premium Audio with 10 speakers, plus blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. If you want the most balanced mix of equipment and price, this is the trim to target.
• A-Spec Package: This trim builds on the Technology Package with LED fog lights, puddle lights, heated and ventilated front seats, 20-inch wheels, and Alcantara and leather seating surfaces. It suits you if you want a more upscale, sportier appearance and extra comfort features.
• Technology Plus: This version adds heated rear outboard seats, auto-leveling headlamps, and an upgraded ELS Studio 11-speaker audio system. It is a good fit if rear-seat comfort and a better audio setup matter to you.
• Elite Package: This is the most fully loaded MDX, with an Active Damper System suspension, surround-view camera, and a 16.2-inch rear entertainment screen with HDMI compatibility. Choose it if you want the most luxury and family-friendly features in the range.

The standard AcuraWatch safety suite is a strong reason to start with this model, while the Technology Package is the trim where the added equipment becomes especially compelling.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Acura MDX?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile opportunities.

• Deal availability: 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 85 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 19.17% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $29,733 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Acura MDX's resale value?

The current average of $29,865 CAD sits slightly below last year's $36,948 CAD.

That price movement suggests the MDX has become more accessible for used buyers, but it also means a future seller may face a softer market than owners saw a year ago. If you buy now, you are entering at a lower price point than recent sellers enjoyed, which can help cushion depreciation if the market stabilises. Strong demand for a well-known three-row luxury SUV should still support interest, especially in well-kept examples with desirable equipment.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Acura MDX safe?

The MDX earns “good” ratings from IIHS across all crash-test categories, “acceptable” for headlights, “superior” for front crash prevention, and “acceptable” for LATCH ease of use. It also earns a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

AcuraWatch is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, lane-keep assist, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is added with the Technology Package. The MDX also includes a rearview camera with dynamic guidelines, plus a broad set of airbags and stability systems.

Should I buy a 2020 Acura MDX or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 19.17% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 model combines standard advanced safety features with a spacious three-row layout and a well-rounded luxury-SUV package.

The bottom line: The 2020 MDX is a sensible choice if you want a proven three-row luxury SUV with strong safety content, broad usefulness, and a lower used price than it had a year ago. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can focus on the better-value listings and still get the core MDX strengths without stretching to a newer model year.
