CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Subaru Forester
Summary
With 240 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,652 CAD, 32.1% of 2018 Subaru Forester listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Subaru Forester 4.75 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Subaru Forester stands out as a practical compact SUV that puts space, visibility, and all-weather confidence at the centre of its appeal. It was part of the fourth generation, which brought major improvements in efficiency, safety, and technology, along with a larger platform, a taller passenger compartment for better outward visibility, and a more aerodynamic shape. That combination gives the Forester a useful, easy-to-live-with character that suits buyers who want a sensible family vehicle rather than something flashy.
For this model year, the Forester came with a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre boxer four-cylinder engine making 170 hp and 174 lb-ft, paired with either a six-speed manual transmission on the base and Touring trims or a Lineartronic CVT on other trims. Symmetrical all-wheel drive was standard across the range, and higher-spec models got X-Mode control with hill descent control. The trim walk also helped broaden its appeal: available features included a touchscreen infotainment system, keyless access and start, and a power liftgate, while the XT models added a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine with 250 hp and 258 lb-ft for buyers who wanted more performance.
The 2018 Forester is also appealing because it balances everyday comfort with a strong safety reputation. EyeSight was available, and by 2018 it was standard on most models. At the same time, the model’s strengths came with a few compromises: the automatic transmission could feel sluggish, and the car was not especially exciting to drive. Even so, for shoppers who value a spacious cabin, good visibility, standard AWD, and a reputation for practicality, the 2018 Subaru Forester remains a compelling used SUV.

The features on this crossover are never ending! The ride is as smooth as butter! The turbo engine makes you forget it's a V4! To find an eight year old Forester with under 41,000 miles was a blessing & I expect to have it for another 11 to 15 years!

LOVE my new 2018 Subaru Outback! I was shocked to see how roomy it is...Im 511 & my husband is 65 and our long legs can very comfortably stretch out in the front. My husband can even fit comfortably in the back! I also love the heated front seats...great for my achy back. Love the steerling wheel controls...easy to navigate. Love the brake assist & lane assist. The brake assist has already helped keep from rear-ending someone who stopped short in front of me! I wasnt considering an Outback when searching for a new car, but Im sooooo happy I listened to my sister (who has loved her Outback for the past 8 years & who is 62...also needs a lot of room) and test drove some. The standard safety features & super roomy interior really make me feel like this was the perfect car for me & my family.

Very nice comfortable seating. Lots of leg room, user friendly operations and knob/button placement. Interior lighting and dashboard are excellent, very nice sound system, Car sits higher than older Foresters which is great, feels solid and sturdy like a luxury suv. Large moonroof, very powerful cold a/c, smooth mostly quiet ride, extra large rear cargo space and push button close hatch is awesome. Back up camera and lane keeper features very helpful. Only negative is no a/c vents for backseat passengers.

How much does the 2018 Subaru Forester cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,739 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $16,739 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $19,595 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,297 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −13.26% |
Prices have softened 13.26% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 237 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2018 Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Subaru Forester earns a 4.75/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its spacious interior, safety features, and smooth driving experience, and many also like the comfortable seating and user-friendly technology. That lines up well with its practical, family-friendly focus, especially if you want a sensible compact SUV with good visibility and all-weather confidence. The market also shows 31.6% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 Subaru Forester reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers, with praise centred on its practical nature and everyday usability. The same feedback also suggests that long-term ownership is best approached with a careful inspection of maintenance history, since used examples can vary in condition and some buyers have noted minor issues.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Subaru Forester?
The market looks moderately favourable if you’re a selective buyer and willing to compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 237 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.26% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $16,739 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Subaru Forester's resale value?
The current average of $16,739 CAD sits slightly below last year's $19,297 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the model easier to buy now but may also limit upside for a future seller if prices stay soft. For you, that means resale value will likely depend more on condition, mileage, and maintenance history than on broad market momentum alone. Well-kept examples should still attract steady interest because the Forester’s practical layout and safety-focused reputation remain appealing to used buyers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.26% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2018 Forester is a strong choice if you want a practical, spacious, all-wheel-drive SUV with broad owner approval and a softer used-market price than it had a year ago. If you’re price-sensitive, this year deserves a close look; if you want the best value, focus on well-maintained examples with clean history and compare them against nearby model years before you decide.
