CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Subaru WRX

Summary
With 41 currently listed for sale near Guelph, ON and an average price of $14,719.00 CAD, 29.3% of 2017 Subaru WRXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Subaru WRX 4.67 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Subaru WRX stands out because it combines rally-bred performance with everyday practicality. By 2017, the WRX had already established itself as a turbocharged, all-wheel-drive sport compact, and that formula is what gives it its appeal: it is fun to drive, handles well, and delivers the kind of traction that makes it especially confident in poor conditions. It also benefits from the fourth-generation redesign’s stiffer chassis and more interior space, which helped make the car feel more refined and usable than earlier versions.
For 2017, the WRX carried a 2.0-litre turbocharged Subaru Boxer engine with 268 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or an available CVT. Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive remained standard, and the car also featured AWD torque vectoring to improve handling. In Canada, the 2017 model was offered in base, WRX Sport, and WRX Sport-tech trims, with equipment such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a touchscreen that could integrate with a smartphone, and available driver-assistance technology depending on trim. That mix of performance hardware and useful technology makes the WRX appealing to buyers who want a compact car that feels special without giving up all of its daily usability.
There are trade-offs, though. The WRX’s fuel economy is not a strong point, and the model is also known for an outdated-feeling technology experience in some versions. Owners and shoppers may also find the back seat cramped, and some drivers wish for more convenience features. Even so, the 2017 Subaru WRX remains distinctive because it delivers a rare combination of standard all-wheel drive, sharp handling, and genuine enthusiast character in a practical package.

This car is loads of fun to drive. The handling, the acceleration are awesome. The infotainment system works for me. I like the interface of it. The limited comes with the Nav. System and the upgraded speakers, both of which I enjoy straight away.

Car runs great, turbo really picks up nicely has great power, the premium model had great features. The controls on the steering wheel are well placed great back up camera amazing moon roof and really spacious for a sedan. A little overpriced for the minimal features you get unless you really want to go all out with the more top of the line model but great car overall.

Reviewed a 2017 Subaru WRX on May 28, 2021
This is a car not for the economy seeker, but for an enthusiast. It has very respectable performance, is built extremely well and retains its value unlike near all other sport sedans on the market. Plus its lines are just gorgeous ( to me, of course). Seats are meant for narrow hips so anyone above average wont be comfortable, and clutch pretty heavy so bring your NFL kicking leg for any stop and go traffic. Honda type R would probably be the closest competition in my mind, but AWD is the definite deal sealer in my mind, especially with ambitions to move north. This is a super car for its cost. Highly recommended

How much does the 2017 Subaru WRX cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,871 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $16,442 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $18,826 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $18,215 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.38% |
Prices have softened 7.38% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 107 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2017 Subaru WRX a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Subaru WRX earns a 4.67/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its exciting performance, impressive handling, and all-wheel drive capability, and they also like its unique styling. For you, that means this is a strong fit if you want a practical sport compact that still feels engaging in everyday driving. The market also shows 31.8% of listings as good or great deals, which suggests there are worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Subaru WRX reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that many drivers feel good about living with over time, especially because it is described as dependable in the ways that matter to enthusiasts: strong performance, confident all-wheel drive, and a driving experience people keep coming back to. That said, you should still pay close attention to maintenance history and how the car has been used, since a used performance sedan can carry more ownership risk than a typical commuter.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru WRX?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be patient and still find a solid example if you know what to look for.
- Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 107 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.38% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $16,442 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru WRX's resale value?
The current average of $16,871 CAD sits slightly below last year's $18,215 CAD.
That softer pricing can be a mixed signal for future resale. On one hand, it may help you buy at a more attractive entry point today. On the other, it suggests the market has already adjusted downward, so future appreciation is unlikely and your best resale outcome will depend on condition, mileage, and service records. If you keep the car well maintained, you should be in a better position to protect value when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru WRX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.38% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the WRX’s core formula of turbocharged performance, standard all-wheel drive, and everyday usability, the 2017 is a strong choice. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the best-maintained example rather than chasing a specific model year badge.
