CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Subaru WRX
Summary
With 100 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,528 CAD, 32.0% of 2017 Subaru WRX listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Subaru WRX 4.67 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Subaru WRX stands out as a practical sport compact with rally roots, and its appeal comes from the way it blends everyday usability with genuine performance character. It uses a turbocharged Subaru Boxer engine and standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, a combination that gives it the surefooted feel enthusiasts expect from the WRX name. For this generation, Subaru also gave the car a stiffer chassis and more interior space, while keeping the WRX focused on drivers who want something more engaging than a typical compact sedan.
For 2017, the WRX carried a 2.0-litre turbocharged Boxer engine with 268 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or an available CVT. It also had AWD torque vectoring to help handling, and the model line included base, WRX Sport, and WRX Sport-tech trims, plus the WRX STI. Equipment could be fairly generous for the class, with features such as heated front seats, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and, on higher trims, an 11.6-inch touchscreen, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane change assist. That mix of performance hardware and useful technology is a big part of what makes the 2017 WRX distinctive.
There are trade-offs, though. The WRX’s fuel economy is not a strong point, and the car’s technology was already starting to feel dated compared with newer rivals. Owner feedback also suggests that while the car is exciting to drive and handles well, some buyers may find the manual shifter a bit rough and the cabin less accommodating for larger occupants.

This car is loads of fun to drive. The handling, the acceleration are awesome. The infotainment system works for me. I like the interface of it. The limited comes with the Nav. System and the upgraded speakers, both of which I enjoy straight away.

Car runs great, turbo really picks up nicely has great power, the premium model had great features. The controls on the steering wheel are well placed great back up camera amazing moon roof and really spacious for a sedan. A little overpriced for the minimal features you get unless you really want to go all out with the more top of the line model but great car overall.

Reviewed a 2017 Subaru WRX on May 28, 2021
This is a car not for the economy seeker, but for an enthusiast. It has very respectable performance, is built extremely well and retains its value unlike near all other sport sedans on the market. Plus its lines are just gorgeous ( to me, of course). Seats are meant for narrow hips so anyone above average wont be comfortable, and clutch pretty heavy so bring your NFL kicking leg for any stop and go traffic. Honda type R would probably be the closest competition in my mind, but AWD is the definite deal sealer in my mind, especially with ambitions to move north. This is a super car for its cost. Highly recommended

How much does the 2017 Subaru WRX cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,393 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $16,393 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $18,826 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $18,277 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.30% |

There are 104 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of choice in the used market.
Is the 2017 Subaru WRX a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Subaru WRX earns a 4.7/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its exciting performance, impressive handling, and all-wheel drive capability, and they also like its unique styling. If you want a practical sport compact that still feels engaging in everyday driving, the WRX fits that brief well. With 25.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Subaru WRX reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that many drivers feel good about living with over time, especially because it delivers the kind of performance and all-wheel drive confidence they can count on. That said, some buyers mention the manual shifter can feel a bit rough, so a careful test drive matters if you plan to keep the car for the long haul. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is making sure the specific car has been maintained well enough to preserve that dependable feel.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru WRX?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.
- Deal availability: 25.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 104 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.30% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $16,393 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru WRX's resale value?
The current average of $16,393 CAD sits slightly below last year's $18,277 CAD.
That price movement suggests the WRX has become more accessible for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy well now and keep the car in strong condition, you may be better positioned when it is time to sell. Demand should remain supported by the WRX’s enthusiast appeal and strong owner satisfaction.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru WRX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 25.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.30% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 WRX makes the most sense if you want the core WRX formula at a lower used price and you value performance, all-wheel drive, and everyday usability. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2016 can be worth a look for similar fundamentals, while shoppers who want a newer feel may prefer moving to a later year.
