CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Kia Sorento
Summary
With 50 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,495 CAD, 16.0% of 2017 Kia Sorento listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Kia Sorento 4.6 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Kia Sorento stands out as a well-rounded midsize SUV that had already moved far beyond the rougher, less refined early years of the nameplate. By this generation, Kia had given it a larger footprint, more rounded styling, and a much-improved cabin with better materials and more passenger space. It also offered a third row, though that seating area was still best suited to smaller passengers. For shoppers looking for a used SUV with a more polished feel than the Sorento’s earlier reputation might suggest, this model year has a lot going for it.
What makes the 2017 Sorento especially appealing is the mix of practicality and equipment. Standard heated front seats were unusual at the time, and the model also offered available Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, along with advanced safety features such as automatic emergency braking. The available turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine was recommended in the guide for drivers who did not need the third row, while the V6 remained the stronger choice for those who wanted more power. On the downside, the base four-cylinder was described as too weak for the larger Sorento, and the third row could feel cramped and difficult to access. Still, the 2017 Sorento’s combination of space, features, and improved refinement makes it a compelling used SUV choice.

I love the car overall, great for my family and I. One thing I don’t like about it, on cold days I can’t start my car up and go back in the house! The doors won’t stay locked but other than that, no issues!

Have not received the car yet. It is yet to be delivered. But everything we have read and watched has been very positive about this car. Everyone keeps comparing the third row seats and less luggage storage to other larger vehicles. We keep saying, this is a cross over, not a minivan. If you want a third row with lots of extra luggage space, buy a minivan not a cross over. I am sure we will love the car!

Very nice car. Rides as good as a Lexus. Has more power than I expected for a 4 cylinder. Handles well.

How much does the 2017 Kia Sorento cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $12,497 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $12,497 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $15,054 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,054 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −16.99% |
Prices have softened 16.99% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 267 listings available, which suggests a modest amount of inventory for you to compare.
Is the 2017 Kia Sorento a good car?
Yes — the 4.6/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners commonly praise the smooth ride, stylish interior, comfort, and available power, especially with the V6. That lines up well with the Sorento’s role as a well-rounded midsize SUV with a more polished cabin, useful passenger space, and family-friendly features such as available smartphone integration and advanced safety tech. With 22.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Kia Sorento reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a vehicle that many people have found dependable and easy to live with over time, especially when equipped with the smoother, stronger powertrains. At the same time, some owners mentioned occasional engine issues, so a careful pre-purchase inspection matters if you want to reduce long-term ownership risk.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Sorento?
It looks like a moderate buyer’s market, so you can afford to be selective without waiting forever.
- Deal availability: 22.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 267 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.99% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $12,497 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Kia Sorento's resale value?
The current average of $12,497 CAD sits slightly below last year's $15,054 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the Sorento more attractive to you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it also means there may be less upside if prices stay near the current level. Even so, a well-kept example with the right equipment and a strong service history should still appeal to shoppers looking for a practical midsize SUV.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Kia Sorento or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 22.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.99% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 Sorento is a smart pick if you want a more polished midsize SUV with strong owner approval, useful features, and a price that has come down meaningfully. If you are especially price-sensitive, it is also worth comparing nearby model years to see whether a similar Sorento offers a better deal or a better-equipped trim for the money.
