CarGurus Analysis: 2017 GMC Canyon
Summary
With 73 currently listed for sale and an average price of $23,185 CAD, 19.2% of 2017 GMC Canyon listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 GMC Canyon 4.7 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2017 GMC Canyon stands out in the midsize pickup class because it blends truck capability with a more upscale feel than many rivals. For this model year, the V6 engine received a slight boost in output to 308 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. A new Denali trim was also added, bringing 20-inch chrome wheels, a spray-in bedliner, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, the Driver Alert package, a Bose premium audio system, and a wireless charging pad. That combination of stronger performance and added luxury helps explain why the Canyon has long appealed to buyers who want a pickup that feels a little more refined.
It also offers a broad range of equipment that makes it easy to tailor the truck to different needs. The 2017 Canyon could be had with features such as Apple CarPlay on the higher trims, and the available All-Terrain package added off-road hardware like all-terrain tyres, an off-road-tuned suspension, a locking rear differential, hill descent control, and front recovery hooks. The Denali trim’s upscale touches reinforce the Canyon’s distinctive position as a more premium alternative in the segment. At the same time, it is worth noting that the Canyon’s power comes with trade-offs: the extra output results in slightly lower fuel economy, and the more off-road-focused models sacrifice some performance and are not as agile on the road.

Very nice, even with all the miles on it. It's a very solid pickup. Was taken care of by the previous owners.

I am thoroughly satisfied with the Canyon I purchased. It has alot less storage in the cab but the rest of the features balance out my experience so far

|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $23,161 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $22,621 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $28,016 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $26,231 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.70% |

Is the 2017 GMC Canyon a good car?
Yes — the 4.7/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers commonly praise its attractive design, excellent fuel economy, and comfort features, while the smooth ride and stylish interior also come up often. For you, that makes sense if you want a midsize pickup that feels more refined than many rivals and still offers useful truck capability. With 17.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 GMC Canyon reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback also points to a truck that many owners find dependable and trouble-free enough to keep enjoying over time, especially when they value its comfort and efficiency. That said, used buyers should still pay close attention to maintenance history and how the truck was used, since long-term ownership risk is always higher when service records are incomplete.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 GMC Canyon?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can afford to be patient and compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 17.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 73 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.70% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $22,621 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 GMC Canyon's resale value?
The current average of $23,161 CAD sits slightly below last year's $26,231 CAD.
That kind of price movement suggests the Canyon has softened enough to create a better entry point for you as a buyer, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy well now, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation pressure later. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 17.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.70% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want a Canyon with a strong owner-reputation and a softer used-market price than last year, the 2017 is the primary year to target. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can also compare nearby years to see whether a lower asking price outweighs the 2017’s stronger market position.
