Why it stands out
The 2016 Nissan Sentra sits within the seventh-generation run, and its appeal starts with the fact that this redesign made the car more practical than before. Nissan described it as having a more spacious interior and a more fuel-efficient powertrain, while also noting that the 2013 redesign was 68 kilograms lighter than the outgoing model. For buyers shopping a compact sedan, that combination of added room and improved efficiency is a big part of what made the Sentra distinctive in this era.
For 2016 specifically, the Sentra also benefited from a refresh that gave it Nissan’s V-motion grille. That update helped the car look more modern without changing its basic mission as an affordable, everyday sedan. The broader seventh-generation lineup offered S, SV, SR, and SL trims, and the model’s mix of manual and CVT transmissions gave shoppers some choice in how they wanted the car to drive.
There are limits to keep in mind, though. The Sentra’s performance was not its calling card, and this generation is considered the least reliable because of CVT issues, so a careful test drive matters. Even so, the 2016 Nissan Sentra remained appealing as a roomy, efficient compact car with a refreshed appearance and a straightforward focus on value.

Starter car for my 16 year old. It is perfect for her. Great back up camera! It is cute enough to make her happy, but practical and sturdy enough to make me happy. Estimated life span for the car is 250k-300k per the internet, so hopefully this will last her through college.

Is the 2016 Nissan Sentra a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Nissan Sentra earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Its appeal comes from a more spacious interior, a more fuel-efficient powertrain, and a refreshed look that added Nissan’s V-motion grille for 2016. For you, that means a compact sedan that focuses on everyday practicality, value, and efficiency rather than performance. The market also shows 28.0% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Nissan Sentra reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2016 Sentra’s strengths are its practical design, improved efficiency, and roomy cabin, but this generation is also known for CVT-related concerns. If you’re considering one used, a careful test drive and close attention to maintenance history matter because transmission issues can affect long-term ownership risk.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Nissan Sentra?
It looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 28.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 118 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 14.74% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $8,542 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Nissan Sentra's resale value?
The current average of $8,542 CAD sits slightly below last year's $10,019 CAD.
That price movement suggests the Sentra has become more affordable in the used market, which can help you buy in at a lower cost today. For a future seller, though, softer pricing can mean less upside if the market stays cautious. The model’s practical reputation and efficient focus should still help it remain relevant to budget-minded shoppers. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Nissan Sentra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 28.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 14.74% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2016 Sentra makes sense if you want a roomy, efficient compact sedan with a refreshed appearance and a used price that has come down. If you’re especially price-sensitive, a nearby year may also be worth comparing, but the 2016 is the better fit when you want a balance of value, practicality, and current market softness.
