CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
Summary
With 78 currently listed for sale and an average price of $22,276 CAD, 37.2% of 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 4.64 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class stands out as a luxury mid-size car that blends traditional Mercedes-Benz polish with a strong sense of modern technology. In its fifth-generation form, the sedan looks more like a scaled-down S-Class, and the cabin reinforces that impression with a swoopy dashboard, circular air vents, and two side-by-side 12.3-inch display screens in most versions. It also comes with a generous standard equipment list that includes electric adjustment for the steering wheel and front seats, a rear-view camera, satellite navigation, LED headlamps, and a wide range of driver-assistance safety features. For buyers who want a used luxury car that still feels current, that combination is a major part of its appeal.
This generation also offers a broad spread of powertrains and body styles, which helps explain why the E-Class has such a strong reputation. The 2016 model year was introduced as a sedan, with wagon versions following later the same year, and the range eventually expanded to include coupe, Cabriolet, and All Terrain variants. Engine choices ranged from 2.0-litre four-cylinder models to 3.0-litre six-cylinder versions, while AMG models brought much more performance; all versions had a turbo and a nine-speed automatic transmission as standard. In Canada, most versions came with 4Matic all-wheel drive as standard, though certain models used rear-wheel drive, most notably the Bluetec diesels. That breadth makes the E-Class unusually versatile for a luxury car.
There are a few caveats, though. Prices for this generation were high when new, and used examples can still be expensive. Some owners have reported shuddering brakes and glitchy infotainment systems, and early E300 models had a potential cracked-piston issue. Even so, the fifth-generation E-Class is generally regarded as beautifully built and generally reliable, which helps explain why it remains one of the more appealing used luxury choices.

Moving from sn SUV to a sedan the E400 series offered Mercedes dependability and performance at an affordable price. Thrilled with my purchase. I had looked at the 300 but at 6-4 I found the 400 to be more comfortable.

Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that many people find reliable, dependable, and comfortable to live with over time. That said, some owners have reported issues with dealership transparency regarding vehicle condition, so a careful pre-purchase inspection still matters. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the model’s overall reputation and more about finding one with clear maintenance history and sound condition.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 83 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.41% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $21,846 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class's resale value?
The current average of $22,469 CAD sits slightly below last year's $25,080 CAD.
That softer pricing can be good news if you are buying now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive resale environment if prices do not rebound. The current range suggests the market is still adjusting, so condition, mileage, and equipment will matter a lot when it comes time to sell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.41% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2016 is a strong choice if you want a well-equipped luxury sedan with broad appeal, solid owner satisfaction, and a market that currently offers some negotiating room. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years as well, but the 2016 stands out as the better pick when you want a balance of modern feel and used-market value.
