CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Mazda MAZDA3

Summary
With 213 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,720 CAD, 29.6% of 2016 Mazda MAZDA3 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Mazda MAZDA3 4.3 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out because it blends compact-car practicality with a more engaging personality than many mainstream rivals. Mazda’s formula for the model has always centred on style and driver appeal, and this generation continues that approach with a sleeker exterior, a premium-feeling cabin, and a focus on higher quality throughout. It remains competitively priced, yet it looks and feels more like a European premium-brand model than a typical economy car.
For this model year, the Mazda3 was available as a hatchback or sedan and offered a choice of 2.0-litre or 2.5-litre Skyactiv engines. Higher trims came with Mazda Connect, including a seven-inch display, satellite navigation, a rear-view camera, and satellite/internet radio integration. The car also offered good fuel economy for its class, and the available equipment made it feel well sorted without pushing it into luxury-car pricing.
There are a few trade-offs to keep in mind. The Mazda3 is not generally as reliable as a Toyota Corolla or a Honda Civic, and premature brake wear is a common issue, especially with pre-facelift cars. The infotainment system can also be glitchy. Even so, the 2016 Mazda MAZDA3 remains appealing for buyers who want a compact car that is stylish, enjoyable to drive, and still cost-effective.

A 2016 Mazda3 is an economic, but spunky little auto that rates high both in reliability and fun. Bonus features increases its desirability. Great maneuverability. Breaking a 35-year Honda Civic habit to enjoy this relatively unknown model.

Outstanding car. I chose the Mazda because I could get more features at a cheaper price than I could with Honda, Toyota or other small cars

| Year-Round High | $13,173 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $12,979 CAD |

There are 216 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of choice while shopping.
Is the 2016 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?
Generally — the 4.3/5 user rating points to a well-liked compact car. Drivers consistently praise its great fuel economy, reliability, and fun driving experience, while also appreciating its attractive design and affordable features compared with competitors. That fits the Mazda3’s role as a compact car that balances everyday practicality with a more engaging personality and a more premium-feeling cabin. With 28.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to find a strong-value example.
Is the 2016 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers’ feedback highlights reliability and a trouble-free ownership experience as part of the appeal, alongside the car’s long-term value and efficient day-to-day use. That said, you should still inspect any used example carefully, because ownership risk can rise if brake wear or infotainment issues have been neglected over time.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Mazda MAZDA3?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 216 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.02% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $11,433 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?
The current average of $11,549 CAD sits slightly below last year's $12,979 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make this model easier to buy now but may also limit upside for a future seller. If you purchase at the right price and keep the car in strong condition, you may be better positioned to preserve value when it is time to sell. Demand should remain supported by the model’s broad appeal and its reputation for being enjoyable to drive.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.02% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2016 Mazda MAZDA3 makes the most sense if you want a stylish, enjoyable compact car and you can find one priced near the lower end of the market. If you are more price-sensitive, it is worth comparing nearby model years to see whether a better-equipped or better-priced example fits your budget more closely.
