CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Kia Sorento
Summary
With 238 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,284 CAD, 19.3% of 2016 Kia Sorento listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Kia Sorento 4.64 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Kia Sorento marked a clear step up in size and presence, growing 19 centimetres longer than the first generation and 10 cm longer than the second generation. Its styling was more rounded, and it moved closer to the midsize SUV shape buyers expect today. Kia also improved the cabin, with better materials and more passenger space, while the third row became more accommodating than before, though those seats were still best left to kids. Heated front seats were standard in Canada, which was an unusual offering at the time, and the model also gained standard rear parking sensors plus available forward collision and lane-departure warnings.
What makes the 2016 Sorento especially distinctive is the breadth of its powertrain and equipment choices. At launch, Canada got LX, EX, and SX trims, each with plus grades in varying configurations. The base LX used a 185 hp 2.4-litre four-cylinder, while a 240 hp turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder was available across the range and a 290 hp 3.3-litre V6 was fitted to all three-row models. A six-speed automatic was standard, front-wheel drive was the default layout, and all-wheel drive was standard on EX and SX models and optional on the LX. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were available, and in 2019 the Sorento gained an eight-speed transmission for the V6, while the turbocharged 2.0-litre engine was discontinued. By 2020, all-wheel drive became standard and the V6 became the default on all models but the LX base trim.
For shoppers, the 2016 Sorento’s appeal lies in its mix of space, features, and value. It offered a more refined feel than earlier Sorentos, and the available turbo engine was recommended in the guide for drivers who wanted stronger performance. At the same time, it was not perfect: the base four-cylinder was described as too weak for the larger Sorento, and the third row remained better suited to children than adults. Still, as a used SUV, it stands out for delivering a lot of equipment and a more mature overall package without losing the practical flexibility that made the Sorento nameplate popular.

How much does the 2016 Kia Sorento cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $11,385 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $11,368 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $14,032 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $13,630 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −16.47% |
Prices have softened 16.47% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 236 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2016 Kia Sorento a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Kia Sorento earns a 4.64/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its reliability and performance, and many also like the smooth ride, handling, and good fuel efficiency. The available features add to its appeal, especially if you want a practical midsize SUV with more passenger space and a more mature overall feel. With 20.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Kia Sorento reliable?
Owners rate it 4.64/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights reliability, and drivers also describe it as dependable and trouble-free in everyday use. That kind of owner confidence matters if you want a used SUV you can count on for long-term ownership. For used buyers, the main risk is less about the overall reputation and more about making sure the specific vehicle has been maintained properly over time.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Kia Sorento?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer's market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 20.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 236 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.47% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $11,368 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Kia Sorento's resale value?
The current average of $11,385 CAD sits slightly below last year's $13,630 CAD.
That decline suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy at today's lower average, you may have less downside risk than someone who purchased when prices were higher. The year-round range also shows there is still meaningful spread between lower-priced and stronger-condition examples, so resale will depend heavily on mileage, condition, and equipment.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.64/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Kia Sorento or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 20.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.47% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.64/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2016 Sorento makes sense if you want a well-equipped midsize SUV with strong owner approval and a market that has cooled enough to create some buying opportunities. If your priority is stretching your budget as far as possible, you should also compare nearby model years and focus on the best-priced examples with the right equipment and condition.
