Why it stands out
The 2015 Subaru Outback stands out as the point where Subaru’s long-running wagon formula had clearly become a crossover in all but name. For this generation, Subaru gave it a more aerodynamic, slightly sportier look, and the model was officially designated as a crossover rather than a wagon. It also kept the Outback’s core appeal intact: standard all-wheel drive, a practical cabin, and a reputation for being comfortable and capable in poor weather and light off-road use. Buyers looking for a used family vehicle with a bit more character than a conventional crossover will find that combination especially appealing.
Under the bonnet, the 2015 Outback came standard with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 175 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque, while the available 3.6R versions used a 3.6-litre six-cylinder engine with 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. Subaru paired both with a continuously variable transmission with a six-speed manual shift mode, and X-Mode, hill-descent control, and hill-start assist were standard. The cabin was also more modern than before, with a 6.2-inch screen on the base model and a 7-inch unit on higher trims, while upper trims could add EyeSight driver-assist technology, including adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning.
There are trade-offs, though. The CVT is a common complaint, with some drivers finding it droning and less engaging on the highway, and fuel economy is not class-leading. Even so, the 2015 Outback remains a strong choice for shoppers who value space, safety equipment, and all-weather confidence over outright performance.

Reviewed a 2015 Subaru 3.6R Limited on Jul 4, 2025
My mother recently purchased a brand new Outback in 2023 and from the drives I’ve taken in it, all of the safety features and the body style, center of gravity and comfort led me to look for used Outbacks for my next purchase. I was not disappointed in the 2015 and I will have a hard time wanting to sit in any other car without a 6-cylinder engine. The Limited trim is perfectly comfortable: the same EyeSight features and safety focuses accomplish the same as a brand new year model but with a touch of “retro” flair in the (arguably dated but, I don’t mind) screen, the accent lighting in the cab and less is more approach of the interiors.

The Subaru Outback 3.6R is the absolute best iteration of the Outback. Test driven model years 2013, 2015 & 2019 and the Outback just gets better and better. If you can find a 3.6R Limited trim level, be quick to snatch it up before I do -- LOL! I truly believe this wagon is worth every penny.
