Reviews Summary

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA delivers on all thing things a subcompact SUV is supposed to do. It’s cute, compact (but not cramped), and easily maneuverable. The new, eighth-generation GLA gives customers a lot of what they expect but also lacks the refinement of other Mercedes models.

Reviews Summary

With the redesigned 2022 Lexus NX, the luxury brand is aiming at a young, affluent, diverse, and tech-savvy customer. At the same time, the new 2022 NX is built upon the brand pillars that Lexus says will support all of its future products. They include bold design, advanced technology, electrification, and a dynamic tuning recipe called Lexus Driving Signature. Does the redesigned NX reflect those foundational building blocks? We took several models for a test drive to find out.

Look and feel

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA

7/10

2022 Lexus NX

7/10

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA presented a modernized look with its new generation, fitting snugly as the smallest SUV in the Mercedes lineup. Its proportions and styling were distinct, making it clear where it stood among its larger siblings like the GLS, GLE, GLC, and GLB. The GLA was positioned as an entry-level model, yet its wheelbase and exterior dimensions placed it on the larger side of the subcompact class, comparable to the BMW X1. The GLA was taller and slightly shorter in length than its predecessor, with short overhangs and cladding that added to its muscular appearance. Despite its small windows, the seating positions provided ample visibility, and LED headlights were standard. However, the interior left much to be desired, with less-than-premium surfaces and a lack of elegance compared to other luxury crossovers.

The 2022 Lexus NX, redesigned and available in four model series, showcased a refined design that was unmistakably Lexus, thanks to its spindle grille and simplified styling details. The NX was longer, wider, and taller than its predecessor, offering more passenger and cargo space. The interior featured NuLuxe simulated leather upholstery, with real leather and open pore wood trim available in higher trims. The F Sport variant stood out with unique styling elements and sport-bolstered seats. Lexus aimed for a minimalist interior, but the integration of many functions into the 14-inch touchscreen made it challenging to use some features quickly. Despite these challenges, the NX's quality levels were generally high, though some elements like the turn signal felt less premium.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA offered three variants: the GLA 250 4MATIC, AMG GLA 35, and AMG GLA 45. The GLA 250 4MATIC was powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, delivering 221 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, with a 0 to 100 km/h time of 6.7 seconds. The AMG GLA 35 increased power to 302 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, achieving 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. The AMG GLA 45 further upped the ante with 382 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque, reaching 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds. The GLA's AWD system offered various drive modes, and the AMG models featured additional performance enhancements. However, the GLA 250 struggled with turbo lag and road noise, and its turning circle was not as tight as competitors.

The 2022 Lexus NX offered electrified versions, with the NX 350h hybrid producing 239 horsepower and the NX 450h+ PHEV delivering 302 hp. The NX 350 featured a turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine with 275 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The NX 350 F Sport added Sport S, Sport+, and Custom modes, along with an adaptive variable sports suspension. The NX's handling was improved, though the turbocharged engine lacked the refinement of German rivals. The F Sport variant provided a more engaging driving experience, while the regular NX 350 offered a softer ride. Despite Lexus's noise dampening efforts, road and wind noise were more noticeable than expected.

Form and function

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA's added height provided a more SUV-like seating position, with easy ingress and egress. Front passengers enjoyed excellent headroom and legroom, while the rear seats offered more legroom than before. The GLA featured a 40/20/40 split-fold rear seat, synthetic leather upholstery, and power-adjustable front seats. Cargo capacity was 435 litres behind the rear seats, expanding to 1,430 litres with the seats folded. The low load floor and available power liftgate made cargo handling convenient.

The 2022 Lexus NX offered more interior room, though it felt cozy from the driver's seat. The NX was comfortable, with heated and ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel standard in Canada. Rear-seat passengers enjoyed roomy accommodations, with rear air conditioning vents and USB ports. The NX's panoramic sunroof extended over the back seat, enhancing the sense of space. Cargo capacity increased by 14% to 643 litres behind the back seat, expanding to 1,328 litres with the seats folded.

Technology

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA came standard with the MBUX infotainment system, featuring two 7.0-inch display screens, four USB ports, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Upgrades included a 10.25-inch touchscreen, Burmester audio system, wireless charging, and navigation. The MBUX system was user-friendly, with voice-activated controls and a car-wash function. However, it lacked a quick way to scroll through radio stations.

The 2022 Lexus NX introduced the Lexus Interface infotainment system, with a 9.8-inch touchscreen standard and a 14-inch screen optional. The system included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, and Voice Assistant technology. A 10-speaker sound system was standard, with a 17-speaker Mark Levinson system available. The new Voice Assistant and Intelligent Assistant systems responded to natural commands, and the NX offered a range of connected services. However, the touchscreen collected fingerprints and lacked a tuning knob.

Safety

10/10

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA included a rearview camera, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and driver-drowsiness monitoring. Optional features included blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control. The GLA's safety features were reasonable but not as comprehensive as some competitors.

The 2022 Lexus NX featured the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, with lane keep assist, dynamic radar cruise control, and automatic high beams. New features included Risk Avoidance Emergency Steer Assist, Oncoming Vehicle Detection, and Curve Speed Management. The NX also had a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, and Safe Exit Assist. Additional safety technologies were available in packages.
