Reviews Summary

The iconic Range Rover from Jaguar Land Rover receives a redesign for 2022, though from the outside the changes can be easy to miss. The interior has been updated with a simpler design and a notable improvement in technology. If you have the budget and desire for a large premium luxury SUV, perhaps with some off-road capabilities, you should start your search here.

Reviews Summary

Raise your hand if you remember the Cadillac Cimarron. A quick-and-dirty response to the surging popularity of small European luxury vehicles like the BMW 3 Series, the Cimarron was based on the Chevy Cavalier, a fact apparently lost on only the poor saps who bought one.

Forty years later, the model year 2022 Cadillac XT6 reminds us of that fiasco. A midsize, three-row crossover plugged into the gap between the smaller XT5 and the hulking Escalade, the XT6 is built in Spring Hill, Tennessee, where General Motors also churns out GMC Acadias. The differentiation and execution are much better this time around, but the XT6 still strikes us as a hasty rush job to capitalize on a popular segment.

Look and feel

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

6/10

2022 Cadillac XT6

8/10

The 2022 Cadillac XT6 presented itself with a polished exterior and a luxurious interior, featuring 20-inch alloy wheels and a Jet Black semi-aniline leather interior. Its design was conservative, with towering front running lights and taillights reminiscent of GMC models, giving it a tall and narrow appearance. Despite its premium materials and sophisticated driving assistance technology, the XT6's interior lacked the distinctiveness expected in a luxury SUV of its price range. The analog gauges and 8-inch touchscreen were functional but not as advanced as competitors, leaving the XT6 feeling more like a well-dressed GM crossover than a standout luxury vehicle.

In contrast, the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover maintained its iconic design with subtle evolutionary changes. The most notable update was the rear, featuring thin LED strips integrated into a darker trim element. The Range Rover emphasized its size and presence, especially in the long-wheelbase version. Inside, the cabin was simplified with fewer buttons and a larger tablet-like touchscreen, offering a modern look. The materials were of exceptional quality, with premium leather and rich wood trim, creating an opulent atmosphere. The Range Rover's interior was more refined than its competitors, providing a luxurious experience that rivaled even more expensive alternatives.

Performance

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

6/10

2022 Cadillac XT6

7/10

The 2022 Cadillac XT6 offered two engine options, starting with a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The Premium Luxury and Sport trims featured a 3.6-litre V6 engine delivering 310 hp and 271 lb-ft of torque. While the V6 provided sufficient power, it lacked the turbocharged excitement found in some competitors. The XT6's adaptive-damping performance suspension and 20-inch wheels contributed to its athletic handling, but the driving experience leaned towards serenity rather than excitement. Fuel economy was rated at 11.5 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving, with our test vehicle achieving 12.0 L/100 km.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover offered two powertrains: the base P400 with a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine producing 395 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque, and the P530 with a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 engine delivering 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive. The P400 provided effortless acceleration, reaching 100 km/h in approximately 5.8 seconds. The Range Rover's handling was surprisingly agile for its size, with well-managed body roll and a calm, composed driving experience. The standard rear-wheel-steering enhanced maneuverability, making it easy to navigate tight spaces.

Form and function

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

6/10

2022 Cadillac XT6

8/10

The 2022 Cadillac XT6's interior space was more limited than expected, with a narrow feel due to its design. The front seats were comfortable, with optional semi-aniline leather and heating and ventilation features. The second-row captain's chairs offered good legroom, but the third-row seat was cramped for adults. Cargo space was modest, with 357 litres behind the third row, expandable to 1,200 litres with the rear seats folded. The maximum cargo volume was 2,229 litres.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover provided ample space in the first two rows, enhanced by large windows and a panoramic sunroof. The front seats were generously cushioned, with available massage functions. Storage options included two glove boxes, a wireless charging pad, and a large centre console bin. The second row offered power recline and sliding adjustments, with climate controls and USB-C ports. The optional third row was accessible with a button, though headroom was limited for adults. Cargo space was 484 litres behind the third row, expandable to 1,153 litres with the seats folded, and a maximum of 2,365 litres.

Technology

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

4/10

2022 Cadillac XT6

7/10

The 2022 Cadillac XT6 featured a mix of advanced and outdated technology. It offered a digital rearview mirror, Night Vision system, and Super Cruise hands-free driving-assistance system. However, it lacked digital gauges, and the 8-inch touchscreen was smaller than competitors. The infotainment system included Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a WiFi hotspot. The Bose Performance Series audio system provided excellent sound quality, but the head-up display was less impressive.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover boasted a larger 13-inch touchscreen with the new Pivi Pro infotainment system, offering sharper graphics and quicker responses. Standard features included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite radio, and a wireless charging pad. The Meridian audio system delivered powerful sound, with an optional 35-speaker upgrade. Additional tech features included Amazon Alexa integration, remote automated parking, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Safety

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

10/10

2022 Cadillac XT6

6/10

The 2022 Cadillac XT6 came equipped with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keeping assist. The standout feature was the Super Cruise system, offering hands-free highway driving assistance. However, it had limitations in certain situations, requiring driver intervention. The XT6 received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and five-star ratings from the NHTSA.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover included standard safety features such as frontal collision warning, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and a surround-view camera system. While it lacked some advanced features found in competitors, the Range Rover's safety systems performed reliably. Crash test results from the NHTSA and IIHS were not available at the time of review.
