Reviews Summary

Raise your hand if you remember the Cadillac Cimarron. A quick-and-dirty response to the surging popularity of small European luxury vehicles like the BMW 3 Series, the Cimarron was based on the Chevy Cavalier, a fact apparently lost on only the poor saps who bought one.

Forty years later, the 2022 Cadillac XT6 reminds us of that fiasco. A midsize, three-row crossover plugged into the gap between the smaller XT5 and the hulking Escalade, the XT6 is built in Spring Hill, Tennessee, where General Motors also churns out GMC Acadias. The differentiation and execution are much better this time around, but the XT6 still strikes us as a hasty rush-job to capitalize on a popular segment.

Reviews Summary

Designed for Europe’s narrow city streets and tight parking spaces, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class aims to maximize utility in an SUV that is minimally sized. The result is a boxy vehicle emphasizing practicality over style, offering seating for up to seven people and a base price under $40,000 combined with the performance, technology, and luxury upgrades you expect in a Mercedes.

Look and feel

2022 Cadillac XT6

6/10

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

5/10

The 2022 Cadillac XT6 presented itself with a polished exterior and a luxurious interior, featuring 20-inch alloy wheels and a Jet Black semi-aniline leather interior. Its appearance suggested a sophisticated, if somewhat conventional, aesthetic that aligned with Cadillac's brand image. The XT6's design, with its towering front lights and vertical taillights, conveyed a conservative elegance, though it lacked the distinctive flair seen in some competitors. Despite its premium materials and advanced technologies like Super Cruise and Night Vision, the XT6's interior design felt more akin to a standard GM crossover, lacking the unique luxury touch expected at its price point.

In contrast, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB offered a more dynamic and modern design, especially in the AMG GLB35 specification. With its steep windshield angle and nearly vertical rear window, the GLB prioritized function over form, yet it still managed to exude a certain charm with its 21-inch wheels and AMG styling elements. Inside, the GLB impressed with its high-tech, beautifully crafted cabin, featuring dual 10.25-inch displays and ambient lighting. While the controls required some acclimation, the GLB's interior was a testament to Mercedes-Benz's commitment to blending luxury with cutting-edge technology.

Performance

2022 Cadillac XT6

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

The Cadillac XT6 came equipped with two engine options, starting with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. This engine powered the XT6 Luxury's front wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission. For those seeking more power, the Premium Luxury and Sport trims offered a 3.6-liter V6 engine delivering 310 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque. While the V6 provided sufficient power and a pleasant sound, it lacked the turbocharged punch found in some competitors. The XT6's adaptive-damping suspension and available all-wheel drive contributed to a smooth and composed ride, though it leaned more towards comfort than excitement. Fuel economy for the V6 with AWD was rated at 21 mpg combined, with our testing yielding 19.5 mpg.

The Mercedes-Benz GLB, particularly in the AMG GLB35 variant, emphasized performance with its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 302 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. This engine was paired with an AMG SpeedShift eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and AMG Performance variable 4Matic AWD. The AMG GLB35 accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds, offering a thrilling driving experience. However, this performance came at the cost of some daily-driving comfort, with a firm ride and noticeable road noise. The AMG GLB35's fuel economy was rated at 22 mpg combined, with our testing achieving 21.8 mpg.

Form and function

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

8/10

Inside the Cadillac XT6, the cabin offered comfortable power-adjustable seats with heating and ventilation, though they lacked the range of adjustments and massage functions found in some rivals. The second-row captain's chairs provided decent legroom, but the third-row seat was cramped for adults. Cargo space was limited, with 12.6 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 78.7 cubic feet with the seats folded. Storage solutions were adequate but unremarkable.

The Mercedes-Benz GLB excelled in providing a spacious and versatile interior, especially for a compact SUV. It offered dual-zone climate control, power-adjustable front seats, and optional features like a panoramic sunroof and ambient lighting. The GLB's optional third-row seat was suitable for children, though it reduced cargo space. With the third row folded, the GLB provided 22 cubic feet of cargo space, expanding to 62 cubic feet with the second row down. The GLB's design prioritized ease of access and comfort, making it a practical choice for urban dwellers.

Technology

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

10/10

The Cadillac XT6 featured a mix of advanced technologies, including a digital rearview mirror, Night Vision, and Super Cruise hands-free driving assistance. However, it fell short in terms of digital instrumentation and infotainment system size. The 8-inch touchscreen offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but the interface felt dated compared to rivals. The XT6's voice recognition was excellent, though some controls were counterintuitive, and the lack of physical knobs was a drawback.

The Mercedes-Benz GLB boasted the MBUX infotainment system with dual 10.25-inch displays, offering a seamless and intuitive user experience. Standard features included Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, with options for navigation, a premium audio system, and gesture control. The MBUX system's natural voice recognition and augmented reality navigation impressed, providing a modern and user-friendly interface.

Safety

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

9/10

The Cadillac XT6 offered a comprehensive suite of safety features, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. The standout feature was Super Cruise, a highway driving-assist system that allowed hands-free driving on approved roads. However, it had limitations in certain conditions. The XT6 received top safety ratings from both the IIHS and NHTSA, ensuring peace of mind for drivers.

The Mercedes-Benz GLB, while lacking the optional Driver Assistance Package in our test vehicle, still provided essential safety features like Active Brake Assist and blind-spot monitoring. The optional package added advanced technologies like adaptive cruise control and lane-centering assistance. Crash-test ratings for the GLB were unavailable, but Mercedes-Benz's reputation for safety was reassuring.
