Reviews SummaryGiven the brand’s war-fighting origins, the idea of a luxury Jeep seems a bit oxymoronic. But premium SUVs that combine off-road capability with comfort and opulence are fairly common these days, and Jeep wants in on the action. Resurrecting a name that dates back to 1984, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is the automaker’s answer to the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, and Lincoln Navigator. Like these rivals, the Wagoneer is a body-on-frame full-size SUV based on a more mainstream model. In this case, that’s the 2022 Wagoneer, which is also new for this model year (and is covered in a separate review). Jeep considers the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer to be components of a new sub-brand, sitting atop the rest of its lineup. In addition to the Wagoneer name and a basic platform, both models share exterior and interior styling and many tech features. So there’s less to differentiate a Grand Wagoneer from a Wagoneer than, say, a Lincoln Navigator from a Ford Expedition. The relationship might be more like that of the GMC Yukon to the Chevrolet Tahoe. To see if the Grand Wagoneer justifies its “grand” nomenclature, we drove it back to back with a standard Wagoneer, navigating city streets and off-road trails. The Grand Wagoneer launches in Series I, Series II, Series III, and Obsidian trim levels. Our test vehicle was the midlevel Series II version.
Reviews SummaryIf you are a minivan aficionado like we are, then you know that the 2022 Honda Odyssey is the most enjoyable one to drive. It has that light, effortless, responsive driving character that Honda bakes into every one of its cars, trucks, SUVs, and minivans. But you also know that the Odyssey’s rivals are successfully outflanking it in terms of stylish design, all-weather capability, electrified efficiency, infotainment technology, and outright luxury. In response to these new threats, Honda makes no changes to the 2022 Odyssey. Good thing its “original recipe” approach remains pretty tasty.

The 2022 Honda Odyssey was a minivan that catered to families with its practical design and thoughtful features. Its sliding side doors made it easy to load children into car seats, even in tight parking spaces, and the spacious third-row seat provided comfort for additional passengers. The Odyssey's cargo space was impressive, offering ample room for gear and groceries, and its interior design was both functional and stylish. The Touring trim level added a touch of sophistication with dark gray 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels and quality leather upholstery. Despite its practicality, the Odyssey's minivan image was a deterrent for some buyers who preferred the more rugged appeal of SUVs.
In contrast, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer exuded a traditional SUV aesthetic with its tall hood, broad shoulders, and upright profile. It distinguished itself from the standard Wagoneer with a black roof, unique grille, and model-specific design elements. The Grand Wagoneer boasted a luxurious interior with high-end materials, including Nappa leather and American Walnut wood trim. Its spacious cabin offered more third-row headroom and second-row legroom than competitors like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. The Grand Wagoneer also featured advanced technology, including a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a comprehensive infotainment system, making it a compelling choice for those seeking a blend of luxury and capability.

The 2022 Honda Odyssey was powered by a 3.5-litre V6 engine, delivering 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. It featured a front-wheel-drive system paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. While it lacked all-wheel drive and hybrid options, the Odyssey offered a fuel consumption estimate of 10.6 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving. During testing, the Odyssey averaged 10.4 L/100 km on a varied driving route. Despite its family-oriented design, the Odyssey was enjoyable to drive, with responsive handling and quick acceleration. However, its brakes tended to heat up on downhill grades, leading to pedal vibration and audible grumbling.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, on the other hand, was equipped with a robust 6.4-litre Hemi V8 engine, producing 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. This powerful engine, coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission, allowed the Grand Wagoneer to accelerate from zero to 100 kilometres per hour in approximately six seconds. The Grand Wagoneer featured a standard four-wheel-drive system with Quadra-Drive II, offering multiple drive modes for various terrains. Its Quadra-Lift air suspension system provided adjustable ride height for off-roading and improved aerodynamics on highways. Despite its impressive power, the Grand Wagoneer was best driven at a leisurely pace due to its size and weight, which affected its handling and ride comfort.
The 2022 Honda Odyssey offered a spacious and versatile interior, making it easy for families to get in and out. Its low ride height and wide-opening doors provided convenient access, while the quality leather seats and tri-zone climate control ensured comfort for all passengers. The Odyssey's Magic Slide second-row seats allowed for flexible seating arrangements, and the third-row seat was comfortable for adults. With 929 litres of cargo space behind the third row and up to 3,984 litres with the second-row seats removed, the Odyssey provided ample room for luggage and gear.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer accommodated up to eight passengers with its optional third-row bench seat. It offered more third-row headroom and second-row legroom than its competitors, although front-row space was slightly limited. The Grand Wagoneer provided 775 litres of cargo space with all seats in place and 2,667 litres with all rear seats folded. Its towing capacity of 4,472 kilograms was impressive, although slightly less than the standard Wagoneer due to the Grand Wagoneer's additional weight. The Grand Wagoneer featured a standard sunroof, four-zone climate control, and ample storage bins, enhancing its practicality for families.
The 2022 Honda Odyssey Touring trim was equipped with a range of technology features, including an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. It also offered HondaLink connected services, CabinWatch, and CabinTalk technology for monitoring and communicating with rear-seat passengers. The rear entertainment system included a 10.2-inch display and wireless headphones. However, the Odyssey's infotainment system was considered outdated compared to rivals, with a small screen and limited voice command functionality.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer boasted a comprehensive infotainment system with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, dual touchscreens, and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. It featured a McIntosh audio system, a 4G-LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, and an optional rear-seat entertainment system with dual 10.1-inch screens. The Grand Wagoneer also offered a separate touchscreen for the front passenger and Uconnect 5 with over-the-air updates. While the system was advanced, some users found the screen response slow and the graphics plain.
The 2022 Honda Odyssey came standard with Honda Sensing, a suite of safety features including adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist. It also had automatic high-beam headlights and a rear-seat reminder system. The Odyssey earned a five-star rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS. However, some users found the safety systems to be overly sensitive and lacking refinement.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer offered a range of standard safety features, including a 360-degree camera system, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring. Optional features included intersection collision assist, night vision, and traffic-sign recognition. The Grand Wagoneer also featured Active Lane Management System, with plans for a hands-free version in the future. Crash-test ratings were not available at the time of writing.
