Jeep Compass vs Porsche Macan

The 2022 Porsche Macan retained much of its original design charm, despite undergoing several updates since its debut in 2015. With a refreshed styling, larger standard wheels, and a new centre console featuring haptic touch controls, the Macan continued to exude a sporty and upscale aura. The Macan S, our test vehicle, showcased a Volcano Gray exterior with 21-inch RS Spyder Design wheels, embodying Porsche's tradition of graceful aging. Inside, the Macan drew inspiration from other Porsche models, featuring a left-side ignition switch, a large central tachometer, and a flat dashboard. The red leather, gloss black trim, and silver accents contributed to a luxurious and sporty cabin ambiance.

In contrast, the 2023 Jeep Compass embraced a more refined and upscale design ethos, moving away from the rugged Jeep aesthetic. The Compass Limited, our test vehicle, sported Granite Crystal paint and multi-spoke 19-inch wheels, resembling a smaller Grand Cherokee. Inside, the two-tone black and gray cabin with caramel accents offered a sophisticated feel, enhanced by digital displays and metallic trim. Despite its upscale appearance, the Compass's as-tested price raised concerns about its value proposition, especially when compared to small luxury SUVs.

The 2022 Porsche Macan offered a range of powertrains, with the Macan S featuring a twin-turbo 2.9-litre V6 engine producing 375 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. This engine, previously used in the Macan GTS, allowed the Macan S to accelerate to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono Package. The Macan's seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission and fully variable AWD system contributed to its dynamic performance. Porsche re-tuned the Macan's steering and suspension for improved ride and handling, while the optional Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus and Porsche Surface Coated Brakes enhanced its driving experience. The Macan S delivered a thrilling yet comfortable ride, with a fuel consumption rating of 13.0 L/100 km, close to the official 12.2 L/100 km.

The 2023 Jeep Compass introduced a new turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, generating 200 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and Jeep Active Drive AWD system, the Compass offered improved performance over previous models. The Trailhawk version featured a Jeep Active Drive Low AWD system with a 20:1 crawl ratio, enhancing its off-road capabilities. Despite the engine's focus on fuel economy, the Compass achieved a combined fuel economy rating of 8.8 L/100 km, with our test averaging 9.9 L/100 km. The Compass's new powertrain transformed it from lacklustre to lively, though it still faced challenges with body motions and AWD engagement.

The 2022 Porsche Macan provided a comfortable experience for front-seat occupants, with optional 14-way power-adjustable seats offering heating and ventilation. However, rear-seat space was limited, especially for taller passengers. The redesigned centre console with haptic touch controls added a modern touch, though it required looking away from the road to operate. Cargo space measured 488 litres behind the rear seats, expandable to 1,503 litres with the seats folded.

The 2023 Jeep Compass accommodated adults in both rows, with standard air filtration and available dual-zone climate control. The Limited trim offered leather seats, an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, and heated front seats. Rear-seat space was adequate, with generous foot room and supportive cushions. The Compass provided 770 litres of cargo space, expandable to 1,693 litres with the rear seats folded. Interior storage was acceptable, though the centre armrest bin was small.

The 2022 Porsche Macan featured a 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM, and a navigation system. The system included proximity sensing and intuitive controls, though voice recognition was less reliable than competitors. The Macan offered stereo volume and tuning controls separate from the touchscreen, reducing the need for interaction while driving.

The 2023 Jeep Compass came equipped with a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system featuring Uconnect 5 technology, supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Our Limited test vehicle included Alexa Built-in, which performed well, and a nine-speaker Alpine audio system. The Compass also featured a parking assist system and a surround-view camera.

The 2022 Porsche Macan included standard lane-departure warning and a reversing camera, with optional blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking. The Macan's safety technologies performed as expected, though it lacked advanced driving assistance features. Parking assistance was available with a surround-view camera and Park Assist system. The Macan had no safety ratings from NHTSA or IIHS.

The 2023 Jeep Compass added a drowsy driver detection system and rear-seat reminder, with standard ADAS including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist. Blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control were available on higher trims. The Compass's lane-keeping inputs were sometimes intrusive, and adaptive cruise control lacked smoothness. The Compass had incomplete IIHS ratings and no NHTSA results at the time of review.
