Honda Civic vs Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

The 2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid showcased a modern and sleek design with significant styling updates. Its front fascia featured a streamlined look with a single slim lightbar, known as the “seamless horizon lamp,” giving it a contemporary flair. The badge was repositioned above the grille, and the headlights were placed independently below it, drawing a clear family resemblance to the Hyundai Ioniq 6 while avoiding some of its more polarizing design elements. The rear end of the Sonata, already equipped with a lightbar, now resembled the all-new Hyundai Santa Fe, forming a wide “H” shape with the taillights. From the side, the 2024 Sonata maintained a similar profile to the 2023 model, with standard 18-inch alloy wheels on the Preferred-Trend trim and 19-inch wheels on the N Line trim in Canada. The interior saw changes with a redesigned dash, a new T-shaped steering wheel, and a relocated gear shifter to the steering column, enhancing the overall driving experience.

In contrast, the 2025 Honda Civic received subtle exterior updates, with a widened lower grille area and slimmer air inlets, giving it a more aggressive look. The Civic Si further emphasized its sporty character with a new honeycomb grille texture. Standard LED headlights and darker taillights with a smoked effect elevated the Civic's styling. A new Solar Silver Metallic paint colour was introduced, adding to the Civic's appeal. The Si model featured a new 18-inch matte black wheel design, drawing inspiration from the Acura logo. Inside, the Civic Si boasted red accents on the honeycomb dash and red seats, although the styling did not extend to the back row, creating a distinct difference between the front and rear cabin areas. The Civic Si was available only as a four-door, which felt odd given the rear seats seemed like an afterthought.

The 2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid introduced an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system for the first time, available on the Preferred-Trend trim for an additional $2,000. The N Line remained front-wheel-drive (FWD) only. The 2025 Honda Civic's base model was powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing 150 horsepower and 133 pound-feet of torque, with all models being FWD. The Civic Si featured a turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine with 200 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 192 pound-feet of torque between 1,800 and 5,000 rpm. The Si was available only with a six-speed manual transmission, praised for its short throws and agreeable action. The Civic Si offered three dynamic drive modes: Normal, Sport, and Individual, while other models included an Eco mode. A new Formula One-inspired shift indicator on the digital driver information display was a standout feature, enhancing the driving experience. However, the lack of a traditional manual e-brake and gear indication on the dash might deter new manual drivers.

The 2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid provided competitive interior space, with 975 millimetres of front-seat headroom and 950 millimetres in the rear. Front legroom was prioritized with 1,170 millimetres, while rear passengers had 885 millimetres. Heated and ventilated front seats were standard on the Preferred-Trend trim, with a slimmer steering wheel rim for added comfort. The 2025 Honda Civic offered 998 millimetres of headroom and 1,074 millimetres of legroom in the front, with the Civic Si's headroom reduced to 956 millimetres due to the standard moonroof. Rear passengers enjoyed 942 millimetres of headroom and 950 millimetres of legroom. The Civic Si's trunk provided 408 litres of cargo volume, slightly less than other Civic Sedans, but the Civic Hatchback offered an impressive 693 litres. Heated front seats were standard across all trims in Canada, though leather seats were exclusive to the Hybrid Sport Touring. The Civic Si's interior focused on sportiness rather than frugality, with a well-decorated front cabin.

The 2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid featured a selectable USB-C port, allowing users to switch between data-transmitting and charging-only modes, complementing the wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto available on all trims. The curved display combined the infotainment touchscreen and driver-information display into a single panel, with the N Line offering a pair of 12.3-inch screens.
