Reviews Summary

No longer the exclusive truck-only brand for General Motors now that Buick has gone all-in on SUVs, GMC nevertheless holds a unique position in the automaker's product portfolio. Offering a lineup of "Professional Grade" trucks and SUVs with premium features, enhanced capabilities, and unique exterior and interior designs, GMC toes the line between Chevrolet and Cadillac.

All-new for the 2021 model year, the Yukon full-size SUV gets a standard 12-inch driver information centre and enhanced connectivity for 2022, among other changes. The 2022 GMC Yukon is available in four trim levels: SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali.

Reviews Summary

The Jeep Wrangler’s roots go all the way back to World War II and the Willys-Overland company. Fast-forward some 60 years or so and we have the iconic Jeep Wrangler JL, one of the last body-on-frame SUVs left for folks who prioritize off-road capability over creature comforts.

Every Wrangler comes with solid front and rear axles and a five-link suspension system. However, some popular trim levels, like the Wrangler Sport, Wrangler Willys Sport, and Wrangler Sahara, don’t get locking differentials or meaty tires, so choose your Wrangler carefully.

2022 GMC Yukon

8/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2022 GMC Yukon was a chrome lover's dream, with even the base SLE model featuring enough shiny elements to give it a premium appearance. As one moved up the trim levels to the Denali, the chrome became even more pronounced, with the front of the Denali almost entirely constructed of chrome, including a vast, multi-dimensional grille. This design choice gave the Denali a unique look and commanding presence, essential for a full-size luxury SUV. The Denali's 22-inch bright machined aluminum wheels, part of the optional Ultimate package, stood out against the dark Redwood Metallic paint, adding to its allure. Inside, the Yukon offered a spacious and tastefully crafted cabin with standard seating for eight, or seven with the available second-row captain's chairs. The Denali trim boasted four exclusive interior designs, with our test vehicle featuring the elegant Teak/Light Shale colour combo.

In contrast, the 2023 Jeep Wrangler exuded a rugged, no-nonsense design with its boxy shape and iconic seven-slot grille. Available in both two-door and four-door configurations, the Wrangler allowed for a customizable open-air experience with removable doors and a fold-down windshield. The Wrangler's design was simple yet functional, with wide fenders and old-school exterior hood latches. The limited-edition "Reign" purple paint added a touch of flair to our test vehicle. Inside, the Wrangler prioritized practicality with easy-to-clean floor mats and seats, though storage for small items was limited. The Wrangler's interior was straightforward, with a body-coloured dash and chunky HVAC controls, emphasizing its utilitarian nature.

The 2022 GMC Yukon offered a choice of three engines, including a 5.3-litre V8 with 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, standard on all trims except the Denali. The Denali and AT4 trims featured a 6.2-litre V8 producing 420 hp and 460 pound-feet of torque. A 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine, known as the "Baby Duramax," was also available, delivering 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. All engines were paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Yukon boasted a maximum towing capacity of 3,810 kilograms with the 5.3-litre engine and Max Trailering Package. The independent rear suspension provided a smoother ride, though some bouncing was noted over rough surfaces.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler offered a range of engine options, including a standard Pentastar V6 with 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, and a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The Wrangler Rubicon 392 featured a 6.4-litre V8 engine with 470 horsepower and torque, capable of accelerating from zero to 100 km/h in approximately 4.5 seconds. The Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid offered a 35-kilometre all-electric range. The Wrangler's off-road capabilities were enhanced by solid axles, optional differential lockers, and various transfer cases. However, the 392's brakes and steering were noted as lacking, with vague steering and insufficient braking power for the V8's performance.

Form and function

2023 Jeep Wrangler

The 2022 GMC Yukon provided ample passenger space across its three rows, with significant improvements in third-row legroom and cargo capacity following its redesign. The second-row seats folded flat, and power-folding options eased access to the third row. The Denali trim featured a power-sliding centre console with hidden storage, and power-retractable assist steps for easier entry and exit. The pushbutton transmission controls were a modern touch, though they required some acclimation.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler's front seats were comfortable, with heated options available on select trims. The rear seat was a tight fit for three passengers, and the small rear doors made access challenging. Storage for small items was limited, though the Wrangler offered various top configurations for open-air driving. The Sky One-Touch power soft top provided quick access to fresh air, while the Wrangler's charging points were plentiful, with USB ports and a 115-volt outlet available.

The 2022 GMC Yukon featured a 12-inch reconfigurable driver information centre and a 15-inch head-up display on the Denali trim. The 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system included Google Built-In, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a Bose 14-speaker audio system. The Denali Ultimate Package added a rear-seat media system with dual 12.6-inch touchscreens.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler came standard with a 7-inch touchscreen running the Uconnect system, with an 8.4-inch screen available. The system included Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity. Jeep's off-road pages provided valuable information for off-road enthusiasts, while auxiliary switches allowed for customization with aftermarket accessories.

Safety

The 2022 GMC Yukon came equipped with GMC's Pro Safety suite, including automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. The Pro Safety Plus package added blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert. The Yukon received a four-star overall rating from the NHTSA, with five stars for side crash protection.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler's standard safety features included a rearview camera, electronic roll mitigation, and stability control. Additional safety features were available on higher trims or as part of an option package. The Wrangler received mixed ratings from the IIHS and a four-star frontal crash test rating from the NHTSA.
