2022 Jeep Wrangler Reviews Summary

For a long time, the Jeep Wrangler represented a vehicle class of one. Where else could you get a two-door or four-door convertible with removable doors, a fold-down windshield, and go-anywhere off-roading capability wrapped in retro styling cues? Today, the Ford Bronco meets that same description and, in some ways, it's superior to the 2022 Jeep Wrangler. But we love this anachronistic throwback of an SUV anyway, warts and all, even if the overall rating appears to suggest otherwise. And a handful of changes to the 2022 Wrangler do nothing but further cement our appreciation of this formerly one-of-a-kind vehicle.

2023 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Thanks to the rise of car-based crossovers, today’s SUVs with body-on-frame construction appeal to buyers with specific use-cases in mind: towing and driving off-road. Luxury SUVs like the 2023 Lexus GX appeal to an even narrower cross-section of buyers: those who want to tow or drive off-road and do in style and comfort. With a V8 engine as its trump card, the GX remains compelling amid its small pool of competition, but due to a combination of age and a lack of innovation, Lexus’s only real off-road SUV has fallen out of favour for anyone not enamoured by a V8 growl.

2022 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

2023 Lexus GX

7/10

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler offered a choice between a classic two-door or a more practical four-door body style, catering to different preferences. Buyers could select from a variety of powertrains, including a turbocharged four-cylinder, a gasoline-powered V6, a turbodiesel V6, a gas V8, or the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid. The standard six-speed manual transmission could be upgraded to an eight-speed automatic, and four-wheel drive was a standard feature with multiple systems available depending on the trim level. The Wrangler came in four core trims: Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon, with numerous special editions like the Willys and Willys Sport, Sahara High Altitude, and Wrangler Rubicon 392. The High Tide model, a US-market special edition, was based on the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport S trim and included features like LED exterior lighting, a body-colour hardtop with a Sunrider Fliptop, and a Gorilla Glass windshield upgrade. Despite its price nearing $60,000, the Wrangler Sport S interior remained basic, emphasizing durability and practicality over luxury.

The 2023 Lexus GX, with its imposing spindle grille and 206 mm of ground clearance, presented a strong visual presence. The GX Black Line Special Edition returned for 2023, limited to 3,000 units and available in three paint colours, including the new Eminent White Pearl. Despite its luxury badge, the GX's design leaned towards a sleeker aesthetic compared to Toyota's blocky designs. The interior, however, was marred by a disappointing amount of plastic, which contrasted with its luxury status. Despite this, the GX offered luxury touches like heated and cooled front seats and impressive leather upholstery. The GX's dimensions, with a short wheelbase and minimal overhangs, suggested a design engineered for off-road capability, making it easier to navigate technical driving situations.

Performance

2022 Jeep Wrangler

7/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler was equipped with a 3.6-litre V6 engine featuring eTorque mild-hybrid electrification, delivering 285 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 260 lb-ft of torque at 4,800 rpm. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and the optional Selec-Trac full-time 4WD system, the Wrangler was well-suited for slippery conditions. However, its fuel consumption was high, averaging 14.0 L/100 km over a week of testing. The Wrangler's driving experience was unique, characterized by its loud cabin, vague steering, and rough ride, which were all part of its charm for enthusiasts. It offered an immersive experience, especially with the top and doors removed, allowing drivers to connect with their surroundings. Despite its quirks, the Wrangler was celebrated for its off-road capabilities and the sense of freedom it provided.

The 2023 Lexus GX featured a 4.6-litre V8 engine producing 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. While not the most powerful on paper, the V8 offered a satisfying linear power delivery and a distinctive sound. The GX's towing capacity of 2,948 kg was respectable, though it lagged behind some competitors. Fuel economy was a downside, with estimates of 16.2 L/100 km in the city and 14.5 combined. The GX's weight contributed to its predictable and controllable roll through corners, and its driving dynamics had been improved over the years. The Torsen torque-sensing limited-slip differential and standard 4WD system enhanced its off-road capabilities, making it user-friendly in challenging conditions.

Form and function

2022 Jeep Wrangler

4/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler's interior was practical but not luxurious, with durable cloth upholstery and a mix of plastic and rubber materials. The driving position was close to the steering wheel and windshield, requiring some adjustment. Visibility was a mixed bag, with excellent views in some areas and compromised views in others. Rear-seat passengers faced entry and exit challenges, but once inside, they found comfortable accommodations. Storage options were limited, with netting on door panels and small compartments. The Wrangler Unlimited offered 898 litres of cargo space behind the rear seat, expanding to 2,050 litres with the rear seat folded.

The 2023 Lexus GX provided ample cubby space for small items, with a deep centre console bin and convenient cupholders. The decision to use hard buttons instead of haptic-touch interfaces was a practical choice, though it required some familiarization. The centre console lid featured adjustable sliding mechanisms for comfort. The second row was comfortable, with captain's chairs and fold-out cupholders. However, the third row was too tight for regular use, making the GX more suitable as a two-row SUV. The side-hinged trunk door required effort to open, and cargo space was limited, with 328 litres behind the rear seats and 1,832 litres with both rows folded.

Technology

2022 Jeep Wrangler

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler's infotainment system was basic, with a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The optional Uconnect 8.4 system offered upgrades like satellite radio and a premium audio system, but the standard setup sufficed for most needs. The Wrangler included features like remote engine starting, satellite radio, and a passive keyless entry system. The Cold Weather Group added heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, extending the open-air driving season.

The 2023 Lexus GX's infotainment system, updated in 2022, already felt dated compared to other Lexus models. The 10.3-inch touchscreen was an improvement, offering features like SiriusXM satellite radio and smartphone compatibility. However, the graphics and responsiveness lagged behind competitors. The GX included a 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system and a CD player. While the infotainment technology was not its strong suit, the GX excelled in off-road capability, with features like a real 4WD system, downhill assist, and a multi-terrain select system.

Safety

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler offered optional safety features through the Safety Group and Advanced Safety Group, including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control. However, its crash-test ratings were mediocre, with a three-star rating for rollover resistance from the NHTSA and Marginal ratings from the IIHS. Safety features were optional rather than standard, and the Wrangler required careful driving.

The 2023 Lexus GX had not been crash-tested by the NHTSA or IIHS, but it included advanced driver assistance systems through the Lexus Safety System+. Features like automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, and adaptive cruise control were standard. Despite its older design, the GX's safety features were up-to-date, providing a level of reassurance to drivers.
