Reviews Summary

Few automotive nameplates have kept pace with changing market trends like the Chevrolet Trailblazer, which has taken on three very different forms over a relatively short time span.

The Trailblazer name first appeared in 1999 on an appearance package for the S-10 Blazer, a compact SUV derived from the Chevy S-10 pickup truck. Chevy then applied the Trailblazer nameplate to a midsize SUV sold during model years 2002 through 2009. While not based on a pickup truck, this Trailblazer had the hallmarks of an old-school SUV, including body-on-frame construction and available V8 power.

Today’s Chevy Trailblazer has nothing in common with those predecessors except a name. Introduced for the 2021 model year, this Trailblazer is a subcompact crossover with car-like unibody construction shared with the Buick Encore GX, and tiny, efficiency-focused engines. With the Chevy Trax on hiatus until the 2024 model year, the Trailblazer is Chevy’s entry-level SUV for 2023, competing with the likes of the Hyundai Kona and Kia Seltos.

The only changes for 2023 are some new extra-cost paint colours, including Nitro Yellow Metallic, Fountain Blue, and Sterling Gray Metallic, along with an Iridescent Pearl Tricoat roof. Trim levels start with the base LS, and continue with the LT, Activ, and RS. We tested a Chevrolet Trailblazer Activ for this review.

Reviews Summary

Porsche is synonymous with performance. From the automaker’s inception and first production model, the 1948 Porsche 356, it has built vehicles that are fun to drive and engineered with German precision and excellence. Well, mostly. There have been some duds along the way. But that doesn’t apply to the Macan, a compact SUV that is Porsche’s best-selling model. As it should, the 2022 Porsche Macan drives more like a sports car than a sport/utility, and it receives several updates to keep it fresh as Porsche prepares an electric replacement for the popular SUV.

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

10/10

2022 Porsche Macan

9/10

The 2022 Porsche Macan retained much of its original design from its 2015 debut, despite undergoing several updates over the years. The latest model featured a refreshed exterior with larger standard wheels and a redesigned centre console that incorporated haptic touch controls, enhancing both the aesthetic and functional aspects of the interior. The Macan lineup in Canada included four models: the base Macan, the new Macan T, the Macan S, and the Macan GTS, with the latter two benefiting from high-output powertrains. Our test vehicle, a Macan S, showcased a striking Volcano Gray exterior with 21-inch RS Spyder Design wheels, embodying Porsche's tradition of combining elegance with performance. Inside, the Macan's cabin exuded a sporty and upscale vibe, highlighted by red leather, gloss black trim, and silver metallic accents, all contributing to a luxurious driving experience.

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer, on the other hand, presented a compact yet robust appearance, reminiscent of its larger sibling, the Chevrolet Blazer. The Trailblazer's design struck a balance between SUV toughness and sophistication, with intricate lighting elements and dark chrome trim enhancing its upscale look. The Activ and RS models offered unique styling cues, with the Activ model featuring a rugged front fascia and roof rails, while the RS model boasted a sportier appearance with blacked-out trim and dual exhaust outlets. Our Activ test car, with its distinctive Nitro Yellow paint and contrasting white roof, stood out with a retro flair. Inside, the Trailblazer's cabin combined practicality with personality, featuring leatherette upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a mix of copper-toned and sparkly black plastic trim, creating a distinctive yet functional interior space.

2022 Porsche Macan

7/10

The 2022 Porsche Macan offered a range of powertrains, with the base Macan and Macan T featuring a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing 261 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The Macan GTS inherited a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 from the previous Macan Turbo, delivering 434 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. Our Macan S test car was equipped with a twin-turbo 2.9-litre V6, generating 375 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque, allowing it to accelerate to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono Package. All Macans came with a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission and a fully variable AWD system. The Macan S also featured larger 20-inch wheels and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) for improved handling. The driving experience was exhilarating, with precise steering, robust brakes, and a responsive transmission, making it a true sports car in SUV form.

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer shared its platform and powertrains with the Buick Encore GX, offering a standard 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine with 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. An optional 1.3-litre turbo-three increased output to 155 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque. The 1.2-litre engine was available only with FWD, while the 1.3-litre engine could be paired with either FWD or AWD. Our Trailblazer Activ test car featured AWD, a nine-speed automatic transmission, and the 1.3-litre engine, providing a decent amount of power and a pleasing exhaust note. The Trailblazer's ride quality was generally good, with dampers tuned for gravel roads, although some body roll and bouncing were noticeable. The selectable AWD system required manual engagement, unlike competitors' automatic systems. The Trailblazer also offered Normal, Sport, and Snow drive modes, though the differences between them were subtle.

Form and function

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

7/10

2022 Porsche Macan

7/10

The 2022 Porsche Macan provided a comfortable experience for the driver and front-seat passenger, with optional 14-way power-adjustable seats offering heating and ventilation. However, the rear seats were cramped, especially for taller passengers. The redesigned centre console with haptic touch controls added a modern touch, but required drivers to look away from the road to use. Cargo space was limited, with 488 litres available behind the rear seats, expandable to 1,503 litres with the seats folded down.

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer, despite being one of the smallest SUVs, offered decent utility. It provided generous headroom and mid-pack legroom, surpassing some competitors like the Hyundai Kona. The rear seats were comfortable for short trips, but the flat cushions made long journeys less appealing. The Trailblazer's cargo space measured 716 litres with the rear seats up and 1,540 litres with them folded, offering respectable capacity for the segment. Up front, the Trailblazer featured practical storage solutions, including a covered bin, deep tray, and cupholders, although the small dashboard carve-out's purpose remained unclear.

Technology

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

2022 Porsche Macan

8/10

The 2022 Porsche Macan came equipped with a 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, known as Porsche Communication Management (PCM). It included wireless Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, navigation, and connected services. The standard 10-speaker sound system could be upgraded to a Bose or Burmester audio system. The user experience was generally intuitive, though the voice recognition system lagged behind competitors. Fortunately, frequently used features like stereo volume and climate controls were separate from the touchscreen.

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer featured a standard 7-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. An 8-inch touchscreen, navigation, and a Bose audio system were optional. While the Trailblazer's tech offerings might not satisfy the most tech-savvy buyers, the available 8-inch screen was well-suited to the dashboard, with easy-to-read graphics and logical menus. The combination of a smaller instrument cluster screen and analog gauges effectively conveyed information without the need for a fully digital setup.

Safety

2022 Porsche Macan

9/10

The 2022 Porsche Macan included standard lane-departure warning and a reversing camera, with optional features like blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking. The Macan's safety technologies performed as expected, though it lacked more advanced driving assistance features. Optional parking aids included a surround-view camera and Park Assist system, which could steer the vehicle into parking spaces.

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer boasted a comprehensive suite of standard safety features, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and a Teen Driver system. Optional features included blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. The Trailblazer earned a 2022 Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, highlighting its strong safety credentials.
