2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Reviews Summary

The Volkswagen ID.4 electric car is still relatively new to the marketplace (it debuted for the 2021 model year) but VW is already making some important updates to keep it competitive and fulfil goals set when this compact electric SUV first launched.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 adds a new base model and a smaller 62-kilowatt-hour battery pack alongside the carryover 82-kWh to increase affordability. VW will also begin sourcing cars for its North American dealerships from the same Chattanooga, Tennessee, factory that builds the gasoline-powered Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport. The automaker has been discussing this since the ID.4 was unveiled, but at first cars for our market came from Zwickau, Germany.

The 2023 ID.4 retains single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) and dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) powertrain options, but gets revised exterior and interior styling, some software changes, and a few more standard tech features and driver aids.

The new-for-2023 base model is dubbed simply ID.4, slotting below the ID.4 Pro and ID.4 Pro AWD. We recently spent a day on a test drive with the U.S. equivalent of the ID.4 Pro AWD model, along with a shorter drive in a base ID.4 model.

2023 Toyota RAV4 Reviews Summary

The RAV4 was last revised for 2019, and Toyota takes the if-it-ain’t-broke approach for the new model year, retaining the well-reviewed styling while updating the frequently maligned infotainment system of yesteryear.

This review focuses on the gas-powered RAV4. The RAV4 Hybrid and the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) RAV4 Prime are each covered separately.

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

8/10

2023 Toyota RAV4

8/10

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 underwent subtle styling changes, including a gloss black trim on the front bumper and a more squared-off rear bumper design aimed at improving aerodynamics. New wheel designs and colours were introduced, and the rear VW logo was illuminated. Despite these updates, the ID.4 maintained a distinct EV appearance, lacking the traditional SUV profile and ground clearance that many buyers find appealing. This design choice was similar to other EVs like the Chevrolet Bolt EUV, which also blurs the line between hatchback and SUV. Built on VW’s MEB platform, the ID.4 shared its modularity with a range of models, promising versatility. Inside, the ID.4 boasted a minimalist design with quality materials, including leatherette upholstery made partly from recycled fibres, offering a premium feel even in the base model.

The 2023 Toyota RAV4 continued to offer a range of trims, from the RAV4 LE to the more luxurious RAV4 Limited, with an off-road-friendly option in the middle. The design remained consistent with the 2019 model, particularly in the Trail trim, which featured a distinctive two-part face. The Trail trim also included blacked-out wheels, a faux skid plate, and orange interior accents, giving it a rugged appearance. However, it was more of a style statement than a true off-road performer. The interior offered practical features like a frameless rearview mirror and a variety of upholstery options, from fabric to synthetic leather, depending on the trim. The RAV4 provided a balance of ruggedness and practicality, appealing to those seeking a more traditional SUV experience.

Performance

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

8/10

2023 Toyota RAV4

7/10

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 offered two battery options: a new 62-kWh pack for the base model with RWD and an 82-kWh pack for the Pro model, available with RWD or AWD. The single electric motor RWD models delivered 201 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque, while the dual-motor AWD version increased output to 295 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque, achieving 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. The smaller battery pack reduced curb weight by 109 kg, enhancing acceleration and handling. Despite its impressive acceleration, the ID.4's handling was less engaging, with noticeable body roll on twisty roads. Regenerative braking was present but did not support one-pedal driving, offering a more conventional driving experience.

The 2023 Toyota RAV4 featured a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. While not particularly exciting, this setup provided adequate performance, though it was noisier than some competitors. The RAV4 Trail trim included 19-inch wheels with all-season tires and shared the same suspension setup as other RAV4 models, offering a comfortable ride but lacking in sporty handling.

Form and function

2023 Toyota RAV4

8/10

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 excelled in interior space, offering more legroom and headroom than competitors like the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Nissan Leaf. It provided 858 litres of cargo space with the rear seats up and 1,818 litres with them folded, making it a practical choice among entry-level EVs. The ID.4 also offered towing capabilities, with RWD models towing up to 1,000 kg and AWD models up to 1,225 kg. Interior updates for 2023 included a conventional centre console lid and improved phone storage, along with available three-zone climate control.

The 2023 Toyota RAV4 accommodated five passengers, with 958 mm of front headroom and 1,001 mm in the rear. It offered 1,039 mm of front legroom and 960 mm in the back, providing ample space for passengers. The RAV4's cargo capacity was 1,059 litres behind the second row and 1,977 litres with the seats folded, placing it in the middle of its class. Practical storage solutions included a shelf above the glove compartment and generous door pockets, enhancing convenience for front passengers.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 came standard with a 12.0-inch touchscreen, featuring improved software for better responsiveness. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, along with a digital instrument cluster. The infotainment system offered sharp graphics and voice recognition, though the haptic touchpads on the dashboard and steering wheel were less intuitive. The ID.Light system provided ambient lighting and navigation cues, adding a unique touch to the driving experience.

The 2023 Toyota RAV4 introduced a new infotainment system with an 8.0-inch touchscreen, upgraded to a 10.5-inch screen in the Limited trim. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, along with voice command and connected services. The Limited trim also featured an 11-speaker JBL audio system and a 12.3-inch driver-information display. The Trail trim, however, did not receive the upgraded multimedia system, maintaining a more basic setup.
