2023 Toyota RAV4 Reviews Summary

The RAV4 was last revised for 2019, and Toyota takes the if-it-ain’t-broke approach for the new model year, retaining the well-reviewed styling while updating the frequently maligned infotainment system of yesteryear.

This review focuses on the gas-powered RAV4. The RAV4 Hybrid and the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) RAV4 Prime are each covered separately.

2024 Genesis GV80 Reviews Summary

Genesis introduced the GV80 in 2021, and the crossover SUV is getting a minor refresh in 2025. Still, the 2024 GV80 remains a good choice unless you want to wait for the fancier styling, more high-tech interior, or new supercharged GV80 Coupe coming next year. Otherwise, today’s GV80 is pretty much the same as tomorrow’s GV80, and in some respects, it is the more elegant and traditional choice.

Verdict: Based on our evaluation of the 2024 Genesis GV80, seat comfort is not what it should be. Also, to use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you need a USB cable. This Genesis is thirsty, too. But otherwise, we have few complaints about this stylish, safe, and mostly rewarding midsize luxury SUV.

2023 Toyota RAV4

8/10

2024 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2023 Toyota RAV4, available in Canada in four trim levels, offered a range of options from the RAV4 LE priced just over $35,000 to the more luxurious RAV4 Limited exceeding $45,000. The design remained consistent with the 2019 model, particularly in the Trail trim, which featured a distinctive two-part face. The Trail trim, tested in its US equivalent, showcased an aggressive grille, blacked-out wheels, and additional rugged styling elements, though it was more about appearance than off-road capability. Inside, the Trail trim added orange accents and contrast stitching, with a frameless rearview mirror lending a touch of premium feel. The RAV4's interior varied by trim, with fabric upholstery and heated front seats standard on LE and XLE trims, while the Limited trim offered more luxurious features like heated and ventilated power-adjustable seats.

The 2024 Genesis GV80, available in 2.5T and 3.5T models, was priced between $76,000 and $92,500 in Canada, with all-inclusive pricing and additional services like five years of scheduled maintenance. The Prestige trim, exclusive to the V6, featured luxurious details such as diamond-stitched Nappa leather, a suede headliner, and ambient lighting. The GV80's exterior offered six colour options and stylish 22-inch wheels. Despite its luxury status, the Prestige Signature trim available in the US did not offer significant advantages over the regular Prestige trim. The GV80 was unmistakably a luxury vehicle, with a focus on comfort and style, though some seat comfort issues were noted during long drives.

Performance

2023 Toyota RAV4

7/10

2024 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2023 Toyota RAV4, with its standard all-wheel drive, was powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the RAV4's performance was more practical than thrilling, with acceleration described as "unobjectionable." The Trail trim featured 19-inch wheels with all-season tires and shared the same suspension setup as other RAV4 models, offering a reliable but not particularly sporty driving experience.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 offered two engine options: a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder with 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque, and a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 producing 375 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. The GV80 3.5T, with its upgraded brakes and adaptive damping suspension, delivered a rewarding driving experience, though it was noted to be fuel-thirsty. The GV80's driving modes and ground clearance added to its versatility, while its towing capacity of 2,720 kilograms made it a capable choice for those needing to haul heavy loads.

Form and function

2023 Toyota RAV4

2024 Genesis GV80

5/10

The 2023 Toyota RAV4 was designed to seat five, offering 958 mm of front headroom and 1,001 mm in the rear with the moonroof. While front legroom was competitive at 1,039 mm, rear legroom at 960 mm was less generous compared to rivals. The RAV4 provided ample storage options, including a shelf along the glove compartment and large door pockets. Cargo space was a strong point, with 1,059 litres available behind the second row and 1,977 litres with the seats folded, placing it ahead of some competitors.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 3.5T Prestige offered a third-row seat, with interior options including real or Nappa leather. Standard features included heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and triple-zone climate control. However, seat comfort was a concern, with the driver’s cushion becoming uncomfortable on long trips. Second-row legroom was limited, but cargo space was generous, with 988 litres behind the second row and 2,378 litres with the seats folded.

The 2023 Toyota RAV4 introduced a new infotainment system with an 8.0-inch touchscreen standard and a 10.5-inch screen for the Limited trim. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, along with voice command and connected services. The Limited trim also featured an 11-speaker JBL audio system and a 12.3-inch driver-information display, while the Trail trim included a wireless charging pad.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 featured a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment display, controlled via a centre console dial. The system included navigation, SiriusXM, and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Prestige trim offered a 12.3-inch digital instrument display and a Lexicon premium sound system. The GV80 also included a digital key system and a head-up display, enhancing its technological appeal.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 was equipped with advanced safety features like a Blind-Spot View Monitor, Remote Smart Parking Assist, and Highway Driving Assist. The GV80 received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA, though it received four stars in the frontal-impact test for driver and passenger positions.
