2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

A subtle refresh for the 2024 model year (launched in 2023) keeps the popular Mercedes sport-utility competitive against a wide roster of rivals, which include the BMW X5, Genesis GV70, Cadillac XT6, Acura MDX, and Volvo XC90, to name just a few.

Changes between the previous GLE and the 2024 model year consist primarily of a subtle redesign of the front grille (look closely and you’ll see it's now filled with tiny Mercedes-Benz star logos), reprofiled headlights and taillights, an updated infotainment system, and optional off-road-themed air suspension system that can raise the GLE 3 centimetres to clear obstacles. It can also shimmy this Mercedes sport-ute back and forth to help get it unstuck over tricky terrain.

Specific to our testing purposes, the 2024 GLE also ushers in a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant called the GLE 450e 4Matic. As the last part of the name suggests, like every 2024 GLE, all-wheel drive (AWD) is fitted as standard. Yet the big news is what’s under the hood of this new model, namely a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and 23.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

While fully electrified vehicles presently grab the most automotive headlines, a week spent on a test drive of the GLE 450e highlighted how easily this luxurious PHEV sport-utility adapts to all sorts of driving situations.

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS Reviews Summary

Available in GLS 450, GLS 580, AMG GLS 63, and Maybach GLS model series, the 2024 Mercedes GLS offers something for anyone who can afford it. This year, minor styling modifications, fresh colours and trim, more standard equipment, enhanced off-roading technology, and a new version of its MBUX (Mercedes Benz User Experience) infotainment system update the large three-row SUV for 2024. The changes are welcome, improving an already appealing luxury vehicle.

Verdict: Often, when you buy something expensive, it fails to meet expectations. That’s not the case with the terrific 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class. Yes, the price of entry is steep. But the gratification of living with one every day makes it worthwhile.

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE received a subtle exterior update that was easy to overlook, even for seasoned observers. The front grille featured a clever design with Mercedes star logos, and the headlights and taillights saw minor changes. Standard LED headlights and optional multi-beam LED headlights were available. The GLE 450e test model, finished in Twilight Blue metallic with 21-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels, scored a seven out of ten for its exterior, though the colour and wheels tempted a higher rating. Inside, the GLE 450e exuded luxury with Macchiato beige and black leather upholstery, complemented by natural grain brown walnut trim. The interior offered ten colour choices and five trims, making it one of the highest quality cabins in its segment.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS showcased a modern design with a soft sensuality that aged well, especially with upgraded wheels. The GLS 450 test vehicle featured 22-inch AMG rims, a new silver four-louver grille, polished metal accents, and lustrous paint. Inside, the GLS 450 boasted a Bahia Brown over Black interior with natural-grain Grey Oak, contrast stitching, and polished aluminum accents. The GLS 450 was the most affordable version, equipped with a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine with mild-hybrid technology. The GLS 450 included the AMG Line and Exclusive Trim Packages, Acoustic Comfort Package, leather upholstery, wood trim, and artificial leather on the dashboard and door panels. The second-row captain’s chairs were a no-charge option, and the GLS 450 started at $116,100 in Canada.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a range of powertrains, including the GLE 350 4Matic, GLE 450 4Matic, and AMG GLE 53 4Matic+, with the GLE 450e PHEV joining the lineup. The GLE 450e combined a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and an electric motor, producing 381 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. It accelerated from zero to 100 km/h in approximately 5.5 seconds. The GLE 450e achieved an estimated fuel economy of 4.1 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres in hybrid mode, with a range of 77 kilometres on electric power. The transition between gas and electric power was seamless, and the suspension provided a smooth ride even on rough roads. The GLE 450e’s steering made it feel maneuverable despite its size, and the AMG model offered quicker reflexes.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 featured a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine with 375 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. It accelerated to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds, aided by a mild-hybrid system with an integrated starter-generator. The nine-speed automatic transmission and variable 4Matic all-wheel-drive system provided smooth power delivery. The GLS 450 offered Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Individual driving modes, with a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 kilograms. The official fuel economy rating was 11.3 litres per 100 kilometres, and the GLS 450 delivered a sublime driving experience. The adaptive air suspension and large Continental Premium Contact tires contributed to its athleticism, while the brakes performed admirably. The Off-Road menu in MBUX provided a transparent view of the terrain, and the GLS 580 offered an Off-Road Package for enhanced capability.

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE provided ample space for adults in the first and second rows, with generous headroom and legroom. The cabin felt light and airy, and outward visibility was excellent. The GLE 450e offered 630 litres of cargo space behind the second row, though it fell short compared to some competitors. The optional third-row seat was limited to the GLE 350 and GLE 450 trims and was suitable only for young children. The GLE 450e featured power-adjustable heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, and a power liftgate. Additional features included a Burmester surround-sound audio system, ventilated front seats, augmented reality navigation, and a head-up display.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS, with the AMG Line package, featured sportier styling but had side sill trim that could be inconvenient. The front seats offered comfort with leather surfaces, heating, ventilation, and massage programs. The GLS provided excellent outward visibility and a new steering wheel design. The standard heated rear seats and four-zone climate control ensured comfort for all passengers. The no-charge captain’s chairs offered excellent thigh support, and the GLS had expansive second-row legroom. Accessing the third-row seat was challenging, and space was snug for adults. The GLS offered 355 litres of cargo space behind the third row, 1,209 litres behind the second row, and a maximum of 2,400 litres behind the front seats.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE featured the MBUX infotainment system with two 12.3-inch screens for the digital instrument panel and infotainment display. The system was easy to operate but had a learning curve. Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and an improved voice command system were standard. The head-up display and augmented reality navigation were praised for their clarity. However, touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel could inadvertently alter settings.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS also featured the MBUX infotainment system with two 12.3-inch screens. The system had improved graphics and was easy to use, though touch-sensitive areas on the steering wheel and centre console could cause unintentional changes. The MBUX system offered intuitive touchscreen operation, natural voice recognition, and augmented reality navigation. The Burmester surround-sound system with Dolby Atmos technology provided impressive audio quality.

The GLS’s ADAS provided outstanding technology, with only a minor issue with lane-centring assist on a specific road.
