2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

A subtle refresh for the 2024 model year (launched in 2023) keeps the popular Mercedes sport-utility competitive against a wide roster of rivals, which include the BMW X5, Genesis GV70, Cadillac XT6, Acura MDX, and Volvo XC90, to name just a few.

Changes between the previous GLE and the 2024 model year consist primarily of a subtle redesign of the front grille (look closely and you’ll see it's now filled with tiny Mercedes-Benz star logos), reprofiled headlights and taillights, an updated infotainment system, and optional off-road-themed air suspension system that can raise the GLE 3 centimetres to clear obstacles. It can also shimmy this Mercedes sport-ute back and forth to help get it unstuck over tricky terrain.

Specific to our testing purposes, the 2024 GLE also ushers in a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant called the GLE 450e 4Matic. As the last part of the name suggests, like every 2024 GLE, all-wheel drive (AWD) is fitted as standard. Yet the big news is what’s under the hood of this new model, namely a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and 23.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

While fully electrified vehicles presently grab the most automotive headlines, a week spent on a test drive of the GLE 450e highlighted how easily this luxurious PHEV sport-utility adapts to all sorts of driving situations.

2023 Volvo XC60 Reviews Summary

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are smart for certain consumers. They allow people to give electric vehicle ownership a try before diving into the deep end of the pool by acclimating people to nightly plug-ins and the benefits of electric-only driving.

At the same time, they eliminate a phenomenon called “range anxiety,” which is the mild panic EV drivers may feel when their battery gets low. That’s because they also have a gasoline engine, and that means you can take a cross-country trip in one without ever needing to find a charging station.

Talk about a win-win situation. And among luxury PHEVs, the 2023 Volvo XC60 Recharge is an appealing choice. But it certainly does not come cheap.

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

7/10

2023 Volvo XC60

10/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE received a subtle exterior update that might have gone unnoticed by many. The changes were minimal, with the most notable being the clever Mercedes star logos on the front grille and slight modifications to the headlights and taillights. The GLE 450e test model, finished in Twilight Blue metallic and equipped with 21-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels, presented a handsome appearance. Inside, the GLE exuded luxury with its Macchiato beige and black leather upholstery, complemented by natural grain brown walnut trim. The interior offered a wide range of customization options, including 10 interior colour choices and five trims, making it one of the most robust-looking cabins in its segment.

In contrast, the 2023 Volvo XC60 maintained its reputation for style and design, aging gracefully with its classic Scandinavian minimalism. The XC60 Recharge model, with its Thunder Grey paint and blacked-out exterior trim, looked striking on 20-inch wheels. The interior continued the theme of elegance with black leather, wood trim, metal accents, and ambient lighting. The Ultimate package added opulence with features like a crystal gear selector knob and a panoramic sunroof. Despite its compact size, the XC60's interior felt spacious, thanks to the large sunroof and supportive seat cushions.

It accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 5.5 seconds, delivering a smooth and swift performance. The GLE 450e's electric mode allowed for silent highway driving at speeds up to 140 km/h, with a range of 77 kilometres on a full charge. The cabin felt light and airy, thanks to the light beige upholstery and excellent outward visibility. The GLE offered 630 litres of cargo space behind the second row, which was competitive for its class.
