2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

A subtle refresh for the 2024 model year (launched in 2023) keeps the popular Mercedes sport-utility competitive against a wide roster of rivals, which include the BMW X5, Genesis GV70, Cadillac XT6, Acura MDX, and Volvo XC90, to name just a few.

Changes between the previous GLE and the 2024 model year consist primarily of a subtle redesign of the front grille (look closely and you’ll see it's now filled with tiny Mercedes-Benz star logos), reprofiled headlights and taillights, an updated infotainment system, and optional off-road-themed air suspension system that can raise the GLE 3 centimetres to clear obstacles. It can also shimmy this Mercedes sport-ute back and forth to help get it unstuck over tricky terrain.

Specific to our testing purposes, the 2024 GLE also ushers in a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant called the GLE 450e 4Matic. As the last part of the name suggests, like every 2024 GLE, all-wheel drive (AWD) is fitted as standard. Yet the big news is what’s under the hood of this new model, namely a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and 23.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

While fully electrified vehicles presently grab the most automotive headlines, a week spent on a test drive of the GLE 450e highlighted how easily this luxurious PHEV sport-utility adapts to all sorts of driving situations.

2023 Toyota Sienna Reviews Summary

For many shoppers, minivans represent a true love-hate relationship. Although their practicality, convenience, and cargo space are unmatched, many moms and dads recoil at the social stigma they perceive. In today’s market of increasingly rugged crossovers and SUVs, minivans like the Toyota Sienna just aren’t considered cool. But maybe they should be; compared with your typical three-row crossover, the Sienna is a blessing for parents on the go.

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

7/10

2023 Toyota Sienna

8/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE received a subtle exterior makeover that was so understated, even experts found it challenging to notice the changes. Up close, the new Mercedes star logos on the front grille were a clever addition, and the updated headlights and taillights were more apparent when compared directly with the previous model. The GLE 450e, finished in Twilight Blue metallic and equipped with 21-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels, was particularly striking. Inside, the GLE 450e exuded luxury with its Macchiato beige and black leather upholstery, complemented by natural grain brown walnut trim. Mercedes offered a wide array of interior choices, making the GLE's cabin one of the highest quality in its segment.

In contrast, the 2023 Toyota Sienna aimed to shed its traditional minivan image with a design reminiscent of a Japanese bullet train. The Sienna offered a variety of trims, including the new 25th Anniversary Special Edition. The interior was spacious and functional, with features like a long shelf across the dash and a large bin in the centre console. The Sienna's Platinum trim, although not available in Canada, impressed with its high-quality brown leather upholstery and wood-grain accents. The Sienna provided seating for seven or eight passengers, with the middle row capable of accommodating three car seats. The second-row captain's chairs were particularly functional, offering comfort and flexibility for passengers of all sizes.

Performance

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

2023 Toyota Sienna

7/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a range of powertrains, including the GLE 350 4Matic, GLE 450 4Matic, and AMG GLE 53 4Matic+, with the GLE 450e PHEV set to arrive in 2024. The GLE 450e featured a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, delivering a combined output of 381 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. This power was managed by a nine-speed automatic transmission, allowing the GLE 450e to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in approximately 5.5 seconds. The GLE 450e's fuel economy was estimated at 4.1 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres, with a range of 77 kilometres on electric power alone. The transition between gas and electric power was seamless, and the suspension provided a smooth ride even on rough roads.

The 2023 Toyota Sienna, on the other hand, was equipped with a hybrid powertrain featuring a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and two front-mounted electric motors, with an additional rear-mounted motor for AWD trims. This setup produced 245 net system horsepower, which was less impressive compared to competitors. The Sienna's CVT was not the most refined, and its acceleration was lacklustre. However, the Sienna's chassis and steering were commendable, offering nimble handling and a comfortable ride. The Sienna featured multiple drive modes, but the EV mode was largely ineffective, as the gas engine frequently engaged.

Form and function

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

2023 Toyota Sienna

6/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE provided ample space for passengers, with generous headroom and legroom in both the first and second rows. The GLE 450e offered 630 litres of cargo space behind the second row, which was competitive with rivals like the BMW X5. The GLE's optional third-row seat was limited to the GLE 350 and GLE 450 trims and was suitable only for young children. The GLE 450e came with numerous comfort features, including power-adjustable heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a panoramic sunroof. Additional features included a Burmester surround-sound audio system, massaging front seats, and a head-up display.

The 2023 Toyota Sienna excelled in interior storage solutions, with ample space for bags and personal items. The Sienna's three-zone climate control was standard, with four-zone available on higher trims. The Sienna's minivan platform offered 949 litres of cargo space behind the third row, expanding to 2,129 litres with the third row folded. Total cargo space was 2,860 litres, although the middle row could not be removed or folded into the floor. The second-row captain's chairs were functional and comfortable, with extending ottomans available on certain trims. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel were standard, with ventilated front seats and heated second-row seats on higher grades.

Technology

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

2023 Toyota Sienna

7/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE featured the Mercedes Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system, with dual 12.3-inch screens serving as the digital instrument panel and main touchscreen. The system was user-friendly, though it required some time to master its features. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, along with an improved "Hey Mercedes" voice command system. The optional head-up display and augmented reality navigation were praised for their clarity and convenience. However, the touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel could be inadvertently activated, causing minor inconveniences.

The 2023 Toyota Sienna, in contrast, used an older infotainment interface, which included SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity, and standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system featured physical buttons, which were practical but the interface felt outdated and clunky. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay required a wired connection, and accessing Android Auto was cumbersome. Despite these drawbacks, the Sienna's technology was reliable, with a 9-inch touchscreen that appeared adequately sized. The 12-speaker JBL premium audio system provided good sound quality.

Safety

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

2023 Toyota Sienna

9/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE came equipped with a comprehensive suite of active safety features, including blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and rear cross-traffic alert. Optional features included active lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and evasive steering assist. The GLE received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS for the 2022 model year, though crash tests for the 2024 model were not yet completed.

The 2023 Toyota Sienna impressed with its standard safety technology, which included automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. The Sienna received a 5-star rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ designation from the IIHS. While competitors like Honda and Chrysler also received high safety ratings, Toyota's focus on essential safety features was evident.
