2022 Volvo XC40 Reviews Summary

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge AWD is an all-electric version of the XC40 subcompact crossover SUV. The Recharge was launched for the 2021 model year, so it doesn't get any significant changes for 2022. It comes with standard all-wheel drive (AWD; front-wheel drive is not offered in our market), and Natural Resources Canada says this plug-in electric vehicle can go up to 359 kilometres on a single charge. Is this the breakthrough EV we’ve been waiting for?

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Reviews Summary

Lots of people think they need a traditional, truck-based, full-size SUV. But they don’t. You can whittle down the reasons to spend thousands more on something like a Chevy Tahoe to three things. The first is a need to tow more than 5,000 pounds of trailer. The second is to go farther off-road. The third is for incrementally more passenger and cargo space. If you have no need for such things, may we show you a three-row SUV called the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse instead?

2022 Volvo XC40

9/10

2022 Chevrolet Traverse

7/10

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge adhered closely to traditional automotive design, making it a seamless transition for those accustomed to internal-combustion engines. From the exterior, it closely resembled its gasoline counterpart, maintaining the same basic shape and structure with subtle upgrades. The most noticeable change was the solid panel in the grill, which replaced the airflow-dependent design of the gas version. Other distinguishing features included the enlarged fuel-filler flap for charging, trim-specific alloy wheels, and the absence of tailpipes. The XC40's design was marked by its stylish details, such as the Thor’s Hammer daytime running lights and the illusion of a floating roof, all contributing to its premium appearance.

Inside, the XC40 showcased Volvo's Scandinavian design sensibility, offering an airy and roomy cabin despite its compact SUV classification. The harmonious design of the dashboard elements, from the HVAC vents to the centre stack touchscreen, reflected Volvo's steady progression into the luxury automotive category. The XC40 Recharge was impeccably assembled, with high-quality finishes and a genuine luxury feel, making it a standout in its class.

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse, while often compared to a minivan, offered a compelling option for those seeking an SUV without the need for a larger, more expensive vehicle. Starting at $39,498 in Canada, the Traverse provided standard all-wheel drive, making it suitable for snowy conditions and light off-road trails. The 2022 model received a light restyle, featuring new headlights, taillights, and grille designs, along with updated colour choices and optional appearance packages like the Redline Edition.

Our test vehicle, the RS trim, featured blacked-out trim and dark gray 20-inch wheels, adding to its appeal. Despite its size, the Traverse maintained a level of styling restraint, with crisp lines and tasteful details. Inside, the RS trim offered black leather upholstery with contrast stitching, a black headliner, and gloss black trim. While hard plastic surfaces were prevalent, the interior layout was logical and user-friendly, with matte-finish switchgear reducing glare. The Traverse's stereo controls and cabin temperature adjustments were particularly intuitive, enhancing the overall driving experience.

Performance

2022 Volvo XC40

8/10

2022 Chevrolet Traverse

5/10

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge was a thrilling drive, powered by a 78-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack and two electric motors, delivering 402 horsepower and 486 pound-feet of torque. This setup enabled the XC40 Recharge to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds, impressive for a compact SUV. The gasoline-powered XC40 models, the T4 and T5, offered turbocharged four-cylinder engines with 8-speed automatic transmissions, achieving 0-100 km/h times of 8.5 and 6.4 seconds, respectively.

The Recharge models featured regenerative braking, allowing energy recapture during deceleration, and offered a one-pedal driving mode for enhanced regenerative braking. The XC40 Recharge's low centre of gravity, due to battery placement, contributed to its stable and planted handling. Natural Resources Canada rated the XC40 Recharge at 2.8 Le/100 km combined, with a range of 359 kilometres on a full charge. DC fast-charging capabilities allowed for a quick 0-80% charge in 40 minutes.

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse was equipped with a 3.6-litre V6 engine, producing 310 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. The Traverse's tow rating was 2,268 kilograms, with various driving modes available for different conditions. The V6 engine provided adequate power for the Traverse's size, with a fuel economy rating of 11.8 L/100 km combined. Our test vehicle achieved 11.3 L/100 km on the evaluation loop.

In town, the Traverse offered a firm yet compliant ride, absorbing smaller road imperfections. On the highway, it excelled, though road and wind noise were noticeable. The Traverse's handling was predictable, with limited body roll and a flat cornering attitude. However, the RS trim's all-season tires and the vehicle's tendency to feel disconnected on undulating roads were noted.

Form and function

2022 Volvo XC40

9/10

2022 Chevrolet Traverse

8/10

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge excelled in form and function, offering clever storage solutions and comfort features. The absence of a gasoline engine allowed for a front trunk, ideal for storing the charging cable or small items. Inside, the cabin featured ample storage cubbies, door pockets for water bottles, and USB power ports for devices. The front seats provided comfort, while the rear seats were suitable for two passengers, with limited space for a third. The XC40 Recharge offered up to 1,628 litres of cargo space with the rear seats folded and a towing capacity of 907 kilograms.

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse, particularly in RS trim, offered a seven-passenger seating configuration with captain's chairs in the second row. The RS trim included power-adjustable and heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and triple-zone climate control. The second-row Smart Slide function and long rear doors facilitated access to the third row. The Traverse's cabin provided generous legroom and headroom, though the captain's chairs lacked leg support. The third-row seat accommodated adults with cooperation from second-row passengers.

Storage space in the Traverse was abundant, with a hidden compartment behind the infotainment screen and another under the cargo floor. Cargo space measured 651 litres behind the third row, expanding to 1,637 litres with the seats folded. The maximum cargo volume was 2,781 litres, making the Traverse one of the roomiest SUVs in its segment.

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge was equipped with a comprehensive suite of tech features, including Pilot Assist for adaptive cruise control and lane centring. A heat pump supported climate control, extending the vehicle's range. The XC40 Recharge featured a 9.3-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, running on the Android Automotive operating system. This system included Google Maps, Google Assistant, and the Google Play store, with Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth connectivity also available. Over-the-air updates allowed for software enhancements without dealership visits.

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse offered a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system on the LS model, with an 8-inch display on higher trims. The system supported Bluetooth connectivity for two smartphones, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Teen Driver technology was standard, providing a report card for young drivers. The 8-inch system included navigation, SiriusXM 360L, and a Bose premium sound system on RS trim and above. The Traverse's voice recognition system was responsive, and the available digital rearview mirror improved rear visibility.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge received the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating, with a five-star overall rating for the gasoline version from NHTSA. The XC40 Recharge's safety features included collision warning and avoidance, blind-spot information, lane keep assist, and a high-strength protective cage for the battery. A new sensor platform enhanced active safety features, and Volvo's Connected Safety system shared road condition data with other vehicles.

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse came standard with Chevy Safety Assist, including forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, and lane-keeping assist. Additional safety features were available on higher trims, such as adaptive cruise control and rear pedestrian alert. The Traverse received Good ratings from IIHS in most categories but was rated Acceptable in the new side impact test and Poor for LED headlights and seatbelt reminders.
