The 2022 Subaru Ascent introduced a new Onyx Edition trim level, which featured a blacked-out exterior trim that gave the SUV a sporty appearance. In contrast, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE 53 Coupe was styled with Selenite Gray paint, 22-inch forged aluminum wheels, and polished brightwork, giving it a sleek and athletic appearance. The interior was luxurious, featuring high-end materials like Nappa premium leather and a Dinamica simulated suede headliner. The dual-screen instrumentation and infotainment design added a high-tech feel, while ambient lighting enhanced the driving experience at night. However, the lack of traditional controls made it challenging for newcomers to operate the vehicle's technology, though acclimation over time was possible.

The 2022 Subaru Ascent was equipped with a turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. It featured a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) as standard. Its X-Mode off-road traction control system, hill descent control, and 22 centimetres of ground clearance provided off-roading capability. However, the lane-keeping and lane-centring assistance technologies could feel unstable, detracting from highway driving satisfaction.

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe featured a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-6 engine with 429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque, enhanced by an EQ Boost 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The fuel consumption was rated at 12.5 litres per 100 kilometres combined, with our test achieving 12.7 L/100 km. The GLE Coupe's performance was bolstered by a SpeedShift nine-speed automatic transmission, AMG Performance 4Matic+ AWD, and AMG Dynamic Select driving modes. The adaptive damping control air suspension and AMG Active Ride Control suspension provided a nimble and composed ride. In Sport+ mode, the GLE Coupe excelled on challenging roads, though its size and weight were noticeable. The performance exhaust system's noise could be toned down for a more subdued drive.

The 2022 Subaru Ascent could accommodate up to eight people, though the third row was best suited for children. The Ascent Onyx Edition offered a comfortable driving position and was equipped for winter weather with features like heated front seats and a wiper de-icer. The second-row seats were easy to access, and captain's chairs were available on higher trims. The Ascent provided ample storage, with a dashboard shelf and large cupholders. The 2022 Subaru Ascent's base trim featured a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, and satellite radio. The Touring trim added an 8-inch display with Starlink connected services. The system was user-friendly, with volume and tuning knobs, but voice recognition needed improvement. The Onyx Edition used standard stereo speakers, lacking in sound quality. Premier trim offered additional features like a digital rearview mirror and a 180-degree-view front camera.

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GLE Coupe came standard with the MBUX infotainment system, featuring dual 12.3-inch screens. The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GLE Coupe was equipped with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. The Intelligent Drive Package added 13 driver assistance systems, including Active Lane Change Assist and Active Emergency Stop Assist. The lane-keeping assistance technology was well-tuned, and the adaptive cruise control offered route-based speed adaptation. Crash-test results for the GLE Coupe were unavailable, but the standard GLE received top safety ratings.
