2022 Volvo XC40 Reviews Summary

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge AWD is an all-electric version of the XC40 subcompact crossover SUV. The Recharge was launched for the 2021 model year, so it doesn't get any significant changes for 2022. It comes with standard all-wheel drive (AWD; front-wheel drive is not offered in our market), and Natural Resources Canada says this plug-in electric vehicle can go up to 359 kilometres on a single charge. Is this the breakthrough EV we’ve been waiting for?

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

A subtle refresh for the 2024 model year (launched in 2023) keeps the popular Mercedes sport-utility competitive against a wide roster of rivals, which include the BMW X5, Genesis GV70, Cadillac XT6, Acura MDX, and Volvo XC90, to name just a few.

Changes between the previous GLE and the 2024 model year consist primarily of a subtle redesign of the front grille (look closely and you’ll see it's now filled with tiny Mercedes-Benz star logos), reprofiled headlights and taillights, an updated infotainment system, and optional off-road-themed air suspension system that can raise the GLE 3 centimetres to clear obstacles. It can also shimmy this Mercedes sport-ute back and forth to help get it unstuck over tricky terrain.

Specific to our testing purposes, the 2024 GLE also ushers in a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant called the GLE 450e 4Matic. As the last part of the name suggests, like every 2024 GLE, all-wheel drive (AWD) is fitted as standard. Yet the big news is what’s under the hood of this new model, namely a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and 23.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

While fully electrified vehicles presently grab the most automotive headlines, a week spent on a test drive of the GLE 450e highlighted how easily this luxurious PHEV sport-utility adapts to all sorts of driving situations.

2022 Volvo XC40

9/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

7/10

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge adhered closely to traditional automotive design, making it a seamless transition for those moving from internal-combustion engines to electric vehicles. From the outside, it closely resembled its gasoline counterpart, with subtle differences like a solid panel in the grill and the absence of tailpipes. The XC40 maintained its stylish appearance with features like Thor’s Hammer daytime running lights and a floating roof illusion, all while offering a luxurious and spacious interior that reflected Volvo's Scandinavian design sensibility.

In contrast, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE received a subtle exterior makeover that might have gone unnoticed by many. The GLE featured standard LED headlights and optional multi-beam LED headlights, with a design that didn't stray far from its predecessor. The GLE 450e model, finished in Twilight Blue metallic and equipped with 21-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels, exuded elegance. Inside, the GLE boasted a luxurious cabin with Macchiato beige and black leather upholstery, natural grain brown walnut trim, and a plethora of interior colour and trim options, making it one of the most refined cabins in its segment.

Performance

2022 Volvo XC40

8/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge was powered by a 78-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack, delivering 402 horsepower and 486 pound-feet of torque through its dual electric motors. This setup allowed the XC40 Recharge to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. The regenerative braking system, one-pedal drive option, and low centre of gravity contributed to its impressive handling and efficiency, with a range of 359 kilometres on a full charge. The gasoline-powered XC40 models offered different performance levels, with the T4 and T5 models achieving 0-100 km/h times of 8.5 and 6.4 seconds, respectively.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a range of powertrains, including the GLE 450e with a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and electric motor, producing a combined 381 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. This allowed the GLE 450e to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 5.5 seconds. The GLE 450e's fuel economy was rated at 4.1 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres, with a range of 77 kilometres in electric mode. The transition between gas and electric power was seamless, and the GLE's suspension provided a smooth and comfortable ride, even on challenging road surfaces.

Form and function

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge excelled in form and function, offering clever storage solutions like a front trunk for additional space. Inside, the cabin featured ample storage compartments, comfortable front seats, and a slightly cramped rear middle seat. The XC40 Recharge provided up to 1,628 litres of cargo space with the rear seats folded and had a towing capacity of 907 kilograms.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE provided generous space for passengers in both the first and second rows, with excellent headroom and legroom. The GLE 450e offered 630 litres of cargo space behind the second row, with the option for a third row in certain trims. The GLE's interior was equipped with numerous comfort features, including power-adjustable heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a panoramic sunroof, making it a luxurious and comfortable choice for passengers.

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge was equipped with a range of tech features, including Pilot Assist for highway driving, a heat pump to extend range, and a 9.3-inch touchscreen with Android Automotive operating system. The infotainment system supported Google Maps, Google Assistant, and over-the-air updates. However, the range display showed a percentage of charge rather than remaining kilometres, which could cause range anxiety for some drivers.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE featured the Mercedes Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system with dual 12.3-inch screens. The system offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an improved voice command system, and optional features like a head-up display and augmented reality navigation. While the system was feature-rich, it required some time to master its various menus and capabilities.
