2022 Mazda MAZDA3 Reviews Summary

With the departure of the grossly underappreciated Mazda6 midsize sedan, Mazda has just two cars left in its lineup: the iconic MX-5 Miata and the compact 2022 Mazda Mazda3. Good thing for Mazda they’re both highly desirable. This year, a Mazda3 2.5 S Carbon Edition debuts with Polymetal Gray paint, black 18-inch alloy wheels, black mirror caps, and a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system with aluminum speaker grilles. The Mazda3 Turbo models have a standard wiper de-icer system, and a new Platinum Quartz Metallic paint color is available.

2023 Nissan Versa Reviews Summary

It’s getting hard to find a basic subcompact sedan, but Nissan is keeping the faith.

The Nissan Versa was introduced for the 2007 model year as the automaker’s entry-level model, slotting below the Sentra in the lineup. It was last redesigned for the 2020 model year, and for 2023 it gets a handful of updates, including freshened styling, more available tech features, and a new S Plus Package for the Versa’s base trim level. In addition to the Versa S, the lineup includes SV and SR models; we tested the latter for this review.

Since the Versa has been on sale, the ranks of subcompact cars have thinned considerably. The Chevrolet Sonic, Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit, Hyundai Accent, and Toyota Yaris are no longer sold in the United States. That leaves the Kia Rio and Mitsubishi Mirage G4 as the Versa’s main competitors. But, as is always the case in this market segment, shoppers must also consider whether to buy a new car like the Versa or a potentially better equipped used car for similar money.

Look and feel

2022 Mazda MAZDA3

9/10

2023 Nissan Versa

8/10

The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 maintained its sleek design with no significant changes, continuing to offer both sedan and hatchback body styles. It was available in various models, including the affordable 2.0 sedan, the popular 2.5 S, and the sporty 2.5 Turbo. The 2.5 S lineup provided the most variety, with five trim levels and options for front-wheel or all-wheel drive. The hatchback version, particularly in the 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus trim, was noted for its stealthy appearance, lacking flashy spoilers or body kits, and instead presenting a mature and serious look. Inside, the Mazda3 boasted refined materials and a sophisticated design, offering an upscale driving experience that appealed to those seeking value over luxury brand cachet.

In contrast, the 2023 Nissan Versa adopted design elements from its larger siblings, the Sentra and Altima, giving it a more upscale appearance. The Versa's sleek profile and wide stance, along with its distinctive V-Motion grille, made it recognizable as a modern Nissan. The 2023 model received styling updates, including a new front end and wheel design, enhancing its grown-up look. Inside, the Versa displayed creativity with its dashboard design and large air vents, offering a characterful interior despite its budget model status. The SR trim added sporty touches like red stitching and upholstery inserts, aiming to make the economy car less dull. The Versa's interior was noted for its comfort and good fit and finish, even in pre-production models.

Performance

2022 Mazda MAZDA3

9/10

2023 Nissan Versa

7/10

The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 offered a range of engine options, starting with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine in the base sedan, producing 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. While not particularly fast, it excelled in fuel economy, achieving 31 mpg in combined driving. The 2.5 S model, favored by most buyers, featured a 2.5-liter engine with 186 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, available with either front-wheel or all-wheel drive. The 2.5 Turbo model, with its turbocharged engine, delivered up to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque with premium fuel, providing a thrilling driving experience. However, the turbocharged model's fuel economy fell short of expectations, averaging 23.1 mpg. Despite this, the Mazda3 was praised for its smooth ride, nimble handling, and exceptional balance, making it a joy to drive.

The 2023 Nissan Versa, on the other hand, focused on practicality with its 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine producing 122 horsepower and 114 lb-ft of torque. While not particularly powerful, it was adequate for daily driving. The Versa's handling was satisfactory, with notable grip and responsive steering, making it a pleasant commuter car. The ride quality was impressive for an entry-level model, with a comfortable suspension that absorbed bumps well. Overall, the Versa felt more substantial than its subcompact status might suggest, offering a refined driving experience.

Form and function

2022 Mazda MAZDA3

6/10

2023 Nissan Versa

7/10

The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3's interior was designed with the driver in mind, featuring a snug but comfortable fit. The front seats offered excellent support, and the interior materials were of high quality. However, the back seat was less accommodating, with limited legroom for taller passengers. Cargo space in the hatchback was adequate, with 20.1 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 47.1 cubic feet with the seats folded down. The placement of the optional wireless charging pad in the center console bin was a minor inconvenience.

The 2023 Nissan Versa, available only as a sedan, offered a respectable 14.7 to 15 cubic feet of trunk space, depending on the trim level. While rear-seat space was not as generous as some competitors, the front row felt spacious with good visibility. Storage options were limited, but the interior design was practical, with a low dashboard and side glass aiding visibility. The optional wireless charging pad was conveniently tucked away.

Technology

2023 Nissan Versa

6/10

The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 featured the Mazda Connect infotainment system with an 8.8-inch display, controlled via a center console dial. While Mazda's approach aimed to reduce distractions, the lack of a physical tuning function and a cumbersome voice recognition system were drawbacks. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration helped mitigate these issues. The system included Mazda Connected Services, offering remote access and a Wi-Fi hotspot. An eight-speaker audio system was standard, with a 12-speaker Bose system available on higher trims.

The 2023 Nissan Versa's base S trim came with a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, and Siri Eyes Free for iPhone users. Higher trims added Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a wireless charging pad. The SR trim featured an 8-inch touchscreen and a six-speaker audio system. While the graphics were dated, the digital instrument cluster display added a touch of sophistication. The Versa's tech offerings were commendable for an entry-level model.

The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 excelled in safety, with standard features like adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. Higher trims added blind-spot monitoring, adaptive headlights, and a surround-view camera system. The Mazda3 received top safety ratings from both the NHTSA and IIHS, making it one of the safest compact cars available.

The 2023 Nissan Versa impressed with its standard driver-assist features, including automatic emergency braking and lane-departure warning. Higher trims added blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. While the IIHS hadn't updated its ratings for the 2023 model, the Versa received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA.
