2022 Lexus RX Reviews Summary

Now on the tail end of this fourth generation, the Lexus RX was last redesigned in 2015 with a mild mid-cycle refresh for the 2020 model year. But to consider the RX long in the tooth would be a mistake: this made-in-Ontario, Canada SUV is the automaker’s best-selling model. A carryover for 2022, the Lexus RX sees minimal changes which include new colours and a standalone fog lamps option.

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

A subtle refresh for the 2024 model year (launched in 2023) keeps the popular Mercedes sport-utility competitive against a wide roster of rivals, which include the BMW X5, Genesis GV70, Cadillac XT6, Acura MDX, and Volvo XC90, to name just a few.

Changes between the previous GLE and the 2024 model year consist primarily of a subtle redesign of the front grille (look closely and you’ll see it's now filled with tiny Mercedes-Benz star logos), reprofiled headlights and taillights, an updated infotainment system, and optional off-road-themed air suspension system that can raise the GLE 3 centimetres to clear obstacles. It can also shimmy this Mercedes sport-ute back and forth to help get it unstuck over tricky terrain.

Specific to our testing purposes, the 2024 GLE also ushers in a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant called the GLE 450e 4Matic. As the last part of the name suggests, like every 2024 GLE, all-wheel drive (AWD) is fitted as standard. Yet the big news is what’s under the hood of this new model, namely a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and 23.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

While fully electrified vehicles presently grab the most automotive headlines, a week spent on a test drive of the GLE 450e highlighted how easily this luxurious PHEV sport-utility adapts to all sorts of driving situations.

Look and feel

2022 Lexus RX

7/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

7/10

The 2022 Lexus RX maintained its modern and sporty design, a continuation from its 2020 facelift. Available in both standard and long-wheelbase versions, the RX 350 offered seating for five, while the RX 450h hybrid model provided a three-row, 7-passenger option. The RX's exterior was characterized by sharp character lines and angular features, creating an aggressive yet restrained design. The F Sport models added a performance-oriented aesthetic with 20-inch wheels, black-housing mirrors, and unique front fascia. Inside, the RX's cabin exuded luxury, with F Sport models featuring sporty touches like Scored Aluminum trim and NuLuxe synthetic leather. However, the centre stack felt dated, and the seats lacked comfort, with limited lumbar support and challenging driving position adjustments.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE, although subtly updated, retained its sophisticated exterior. The GLE 450e test vehicle, finished in Twilight Blue metallic with 21-inch AMG wheels, showcased a handsome appearance. The interior of the GLE 450e exuded class with Macchiato beige and black leather upholstery, complemented by natural grain brown walnut trim. Mercedes offered a wide range of interior colour choices and trims, ensuring a high-quality cabin. The GLE's spaciousness and visibility were commendable, providing comfort for all passengers. The GLE 450e's interior was equipped with numerous comfort features, including power-adjustable heated seats, dual-zone climate control, and a panoramic sunroof, enhancing the overall luxury experience.

Performance

2022 Lexus RX

7/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2022 Lexus RX 350 was powered by a 3.5-litre V6 engine, producing 295 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque. The RX 450h hybrid model added two electric motors, resulting in a combined output of 308 hp. All RX models featured an 8-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive in Canada. Despite its sporty appearance, the RX's performance was underwhelming, with a lack of sporty dynamics and a disappointing engine note. The F Sport models included adaptive variable suspension and a Sport+ drive mode, but the changes in driving dynamics were minimal. The RX excelled in comfort and cabin quietness, providing a smooth ride. Fuel consumption for the RX 350 was estimated at 12.2 L/100 km in the city and 9.0 on the highway, while the RX 450h hybrid offered improved efficiency at 7.9 L/100 km combined.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a range of powertrains, including turbocharged four- and six-cylinder engines. The GLE 450e, with its turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder and electric motor, delivered a combined output of 381 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. The GLE 450e's acceleration was impressive, reaching 100 km/h in approximately 5.5 seconds. The hybrid model achieved an estimated fuel economy of 4.1 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres, with a range of 77 kilometres on electric power alone. The GLE 450e's transition between gas and electric power was seamless, and the suspension provided a comfortable ride. The GLE's steering was sophisticated, making it easy to maneuver despite its size.

Form and function

2022 Lexus RX

7/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2022 Lexus RX offered a passenger volume of 2,826 litres in its two-row configuration, comfortably accommodating four adults. The three-row L models had limited space for anything beyond groceries. Cargo space in the standard RX was 453 litres behind the second row, expanding to 923 litres with the seats folded. The three-row version offered 210 litres with all seats up, increasing to 1,657 litres with both back rows down. The RX featured thoughtful interior elements like a smartphone slot and adjustable-height cup holder, but the rear seats did not fold completely flat, and the cargo area had a high load-in height.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE provided ample space for passengers, with generous headroom and legroom in both rows. The GLE 450e offered 630 litres of cargo space behind the second row, comparable to rivals like the BMW X5. The optional third-row seat was limited to the GLE 350 and GLE 450 trims, suitable only for young children. The GLE 450e's interior boasted numerous comfort features, including power-adjustable heated seats, dual-zone climate control, and a panoramic sunroof. The cabin was equipped with advanced technology, enhancing the overall luxury experience.

Technology

2022 Lexus RX

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2022 Lexus RX featured an 8-inch touchscreen display, with a 12.3-inch version available for the 450h L and as an option for other trims. The touchscreens were positioned atop the centre stack, creating ergonomic challenges. The infotainment system was responsive, but the touchpad was hypersensitive and unintuitive. The RX offered a range of tech features, including six USB ports, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, Bluetooth, wireless charging, and a WiFi hotspot. The Lexus App allowed for remote engine start and vehicle settings customization.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE was equipped with the Mercedes Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system, featuring dual 12.3-inch screens for the digital instrument panel and main touchscreen. The system was user-friendly, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. The "Hey Mercedes" voice command system was improved, and the optional head-up display and augmented reality navigation were praised for their clarity. The GLE's steering wheel had touch-sensitive controls, which occasionally caused issues with volume adjustment. Overall, the GLE's technology offerings were comprehensive and user-friendly.

Safety

2022 Lexus RX

8/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2022 Lexus RX came with the Lexus Safety System 2.0+, including adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, road-sign recognition, and a pre-collision system. Additional features included blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a head-up display. The RX was named a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS, but only with optional triple-beam LED headlights. It received a four-star overall rating from the NHTSA, with five stars in side crash tests.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a comprehensive lineup of active safety features, including blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian detection. Optional features included active lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and evasive steering assist. The GLE received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS based on the 2022 model year, with crash tests for the 2024 model pending.
